« Jason Giambi Reaches Agreement With A's | Main | Padres Eyeing Vizquel, Eckstein »
Ken Rosenthal reports that the Yankees have signed infielder Angel Berroa to a minor-league contract.
Rather than having his $5.5MM option picked up, Berroa was bought out for $500K and non-tendered by the Dodgers in December. It was anticipated they would attempt to re-sign him. He'll compete with Cody Ransom to be the Yankees utility infielder.

Nice low-risk deal. Too bad for him Cody Ransom is a stud.

Solid move to help fill in the holes on this team.
He's a good glove at short, and he can play the rest of the infield as well. The bat doesn't do much but he'll make some contact and he's definitely a reasonable buy on a minor league deal for a bench job.

hey i emailed you this one!, (im krazy_carlos@hotmail.com)
Good signing for the Yanks, im a dodger fan and i have to say that you could see flashes of a good player every once in awhile (he was a ROY)
Being around Yankee players i could see him learning some things and getting back to his potential

AND THE YANKEES HOT SPENDING CONTINUES AGAGAGAGAGAGAGAGA

Thanks garrison! Appreciate it. We've been up to our ears today.

Another, great, low risk move...if he doesn't work out, he goes to the minors. The Yanks like their AAA team to be competetive as well
Posted by: Joey | January 06, 2009 at 07:22 PM
Good move by cash......but still waiting for manny.....my guess 2yr 46MM with mutual option or 3yrs and 69MM
Posted by: JKing | January 06, 2009 at 07:28 PM
Manny would definitely top it off. Berroa is a good speedy defender. solid move front office

Waiting for Manny? How many Type A's have the Yankees signed again?
Posted by: abcrazy4dodgers | January 06, 2009 at 07:34 PM
DAMN, I wanted the dodgers to resign him. First they take any chance of LA signing CC, now this. Those stinkin yankees. *fist shake*
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | January 06, 2009 at 07:36 PM
The Yankees signed three players to minor league contracts: Jason Johnson (P), Angel Berroa (SS) and John Rodriguez (OF) All three are headed to AAA to fill out that roster and let the AA and A players develop. If one of these vets reinvents himself or there is a major injury, they're covered. That's about it. So all of you trolls that can't wait to pounce and show how clueless you are...don't waste your time.

he could of been a starter

let me...
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
he found work.
hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
ok. i'm done.

Should blast 25 hrs and start over jeter
not
but a great low-risk reward for the Yanks
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 06, 2009 at 07:41 PM
Berroa probably could have found himself a better situation instead of pretty much assuring himself a AAA job. He wasn't Furcal for sure, but wasn't too terribly bad for LA last year either.
Posted by: abcrazy4dodgers | January 06, 2009 at 07:44 PM
anyone think the yanks should experiment with andruw jones, if he doesnt produce, trade him or hell, let him walk.....
anyone else???
Posted by: jason | January 06, 2009 at 07:45 PM
For the question above.....from what i've heard is 9 Type A and B free agents

And the rich keep getting richer...lol
Enough with the sarcasm, though. Berroa is AAA fodder at this point. He can't really hit, and definitely can't field. To be honest, the Dodgers would have been better served going with Hu last year instead of bringing in Berroa.

i like the signing. good with the glove all over and a speedy runner. the yanks are filling out nicely. just hope they don't trade swisher and the bench will be really deep.

Jason
I'd stay away from Andrew JOnes with three 10 ft poles. This isn't a hard-worker who lost his way. This guy is fat, lazy and was possibly...not for sure...but possibly...the product of PEDs. No thanks!
I'm out. Goodnight all~
Posted by: jjyankeesfan2 | January 06, 2009 at 07:48 PM
Andrew is a waste of time for any team

Andrew is a waste of time for any team
Not to disrespect you or anything, but do u not remember the Rays before last season? Noone valuable or anything....guess they showed everyone that you dont have to spend 423 million to make it to the WS
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 06, 2009 at 07:55 PM
Wow. so basically the yankees now have no holes and now need nothing that the braves or any other team for that matter could offer them for swisher/nady.
of course they wouldnt mind rebuilding their farm system but i doubt the braves give up a top prospect for swisher/nady

Kids tryin to win the utility job....and a ring
Posted by: Joba | January 06, 2009 at 07:59 PM
At least now we don't have to worry about him taking any time from better players like Hu when Furcal gets injured.
Posted by: dusto | January 06, 2009 at 08:02 PM
Who is this "Andrew" person everyone keeps talking about?
Posted by: dusto | January 06, 2009 at 08:03 PM
Yankees fans, can Xavier Nady play first base?
If he can,how bout Nady,Britton for Jeff Locke,J.C Boscan, and Manny Acost
Posted by: Bravesfan10 | January 06, 2009 at 08:08 PM
I really think the yanks need to get rid of melky. maybe put swisher in center or give gardner a chance. but im sorry melky just isnt cutting it.
Posted by: jason | January 06, 2009 at 08:14 PM
Just get Manny!!! Please!!! If your going to do it big ...go all the way Yanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Trade Swisher or Nady who are getting interest ...save that money, save the Pettite money and get Manny and the Yanks will still be under last year's payroll!!
Posted by: QUEENSCAT | January 06, 2009 at 08:22 PM
Anyone praising Berroa obviously never watched him with the Royals. Sure he won ROY in '03, but this guy is a bum and a half. He had one good year, and a short "successful" stint with LA. As much as I dislike the Yankees, I would have loved to see him go to Boston and tank. At least teams are realizing that he is nowhere near starter caliber.
Posted by: PJH | January 06, 2009 at 09:36 PM
Bravesfan seriously thats a piss poor package for Nady (let alone him and Britton), and yes he can play 1st. Yanks don't need any pitching prospects (unless they are dealing them to another team), thats the one area they are stacked (afa prospects go), they need a good catching prospect (not a 28 yo that cant make it to the bigs though,ie Boscan), a SS prospect, and a young corner OF with big bat potential (A-AA level).
No chance they add Manny btw.
Posted by: JudgeNY | January 06, 2009 at 09:48 PM
IM sure when the reports were out that Tex was signing with Boston, people thought the same way
No way they're getting Tex.
Maybe just wishfull thinking but i hope they get Manny!!

Go Cody!

How are there 35 comments on this posting about Angel Berroa? Hah hah.
Meanwhile, as a Dodger fan, I'll say thanks for the memories Angel, but that mostly consisted of the hidden ball trick and a funny interview alongside Manny Ramirez. That's about it. I'll be happier with Chin Lung Hu, Ivan De Jesus Jr or even Juan Castro, who can at least field, than Angel. But I wish him well!

The point being they are done spending, thats why they aren't going after Manny. They would need to get rid of both Matsui and either Damon or Nady. Not to mention they would take a huge hit in the media again. Tex. signing was smart in many ways, Manny signing would be lavish, and complete overkill.

Love this signing. I have said all off-season that the Yankees need to upgrade their bench. They haven't won since their bench has become a weakness. UT is a spot we needed to upgrade or at least bring competition in for. Angel Berroa is a great guy to bring in to compete with Ransom.

"Yankees fans, can Xavier Nady play first base?

First, Britton was released. Second, Nady can absolutely play 1B. But yes, I'd do that trade.

PJH-Berroa is not being signed to be a savior. He'll be in AAA or on the Yanks bench as a UT. What can they lose by signing him? He'll either help the AAA team out a lot or he'll strengthen the bench. If he cant do either the Yanks are only out less than a Million for his time. Thats a classic low-risk high-reward signing.

It's true thats not a good return for Nady but if we cant get anything else we need to take what we can get if we decide we have to move him. The trade wouldn't be about who they got for him but the roster spot it would open up for us to fill in a different way (CF).
Posted by: gianthinker | January 06, 2009 at 11:55 PM
Marcus Giles would have been a better signing but I know the Yanks have eyed Berroa for a while so...

Good signing for the Yanks. Him and Ransom will certainly be competing for that infield utility spot.
