« Reds, Jay Bruce, Agree to One-Year Deal | Main | Manny Ramirez Rumors: Sunday »
Following a new contract extension for Brian Roberts, Peter Schmuck and Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun point out an interesting feature of Roberts' new deal:
The club retains a fairly unfettered right to deal Roberts now, but Orioles officials insist the club has no intention of pursuing any trade talks involving him.
Many sportswriters have questioned the fit of this contract for the Orioles, since it keeps a 31-year old second baseman signed on an otherwise young team. With limited no-trade protection, Roberts may or may not be a continued fit for the Orioles' long-term plan.

In honor of the academy awards tonight I will be playing a cub fan for this post...
I really think the cubs will get Roberts now. If we put Bako, Hoffpauir, Gaub, and Gaudin I don't know how Andy could refuse such a deal. Bako is perfect cause he can back up Zaun when he backs up the prospect guy (note: I know its wieters, but remember I'm playing a cub fan here) Hoffpauir would be perfect for the O's that kid can really hit, Gaub has great numbers in the minors and he's a cub prospect so he has to be top notch, and Gaudin he can start or relieve and when we get Peavy in here next week we won't need him anymore.

wahoo - I personally think we would be getting robbed in that deal. Bako would command at least Adam Jones and Markakis in return.
The extension makes no sense to me. The O's are trying to get younger, then they overpay by spending 40 million on an aging second baseman? MacPhail shot himself in the foot on this one. Instead of taking the cubs package of prospects last year, or the possible draft pick next year, the O's are going to have a bad contract on their hands during a time in which they will not contend. I doubt they go over .500 during the rest of Roberts' career.

Alex, why are you doing this to us?! We're all tired about hearing the Brian Roberts trade rumors and I thought that it would be over, for at least a couple of seasons...

Are you KIDDING me?!
Why the hell can't the baseball world just act like Brian Roberts doesn't exist or something.
EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR. I can't do it any more, guys...

2 years into the deal he does become a 5/10 guy

Why is this extension a bad thing? The O's have nothing at 2B in the system for the next four or five seasons. Roberts is still one of the top 3 2B in the AL. He's more valuable to the O's than he is to any other team because of the role he plays in the community. If this was the Yankees extending Derek Jeter or the Angels extending Vlad Guerrero, no one would blink an eye. But, because it's the Orioles and we've been down for so long that it's fashionable to dump on us, it's ok.
The Cubs would not part with what MacPhail thought was a good enough package. Cubs fans need to quit whining and focus on how well Jim Hendry did turning his team into a middle of the pack almost contender this offseason. As for the O's never going over .500 in the next 5 years, you obviously have no idea what is in our system. Every team in baseball would like to have Jeremy Guthrie in their rotation right now, and it's quite possible that in 2 years he'll be our #4 or #5 starter.

1) "Why is this extension a bad thing? The O's have nothing at 2B in the system for the next four or five seasons." - Trades? Free agents that cost less than 10 million for mediocre production? There are other ways to find viable second basemen rather than overpaying for an aging switch hitter.
2) "He's more valuable to the O's than he is to any other team because of the role he plays in the community." - No, he's more valuable because he's a fan favorite and more fans will come to the games, and buy his jerseys, because he is still an Oriole. It's simple economics. The O's don't pay him 10 million to work at a soup kitchen, I'm sorry.
3) "If this was the Yankees extending Derek Jeter or the Angels extending Vlad Guerrero, no one would blink an eye. But, because it's the Orioles and we've been down for so long that it's fashionable to dump on us, it's ok." - No, the Yankees or Angels are not trying to rebuild their teams by going cheaper and younger, the O's are. So this move is exactly 180 degrees away from where the Orioles want to be, and thus it makes no sense.
4) "The Cubs would not part with what MacPhail thought was a good enough package. Cubs fans need to quit whining and focus on how well Jim Hendry did turning his team into a middle of the pack almost contender this offseason." - Most Cubs fans didn't want Roberts. In fact, Hendry took the prospects from the potential Roberts trade and got Rich Harden, who has been wonderful so far. As for Hendry failing this offseason, while I'm not sure it turns us into a "middle of the pack almost contender," I would agree with you that the moves have been questionable at best.

ok off topic but what you think it would take to get Luke Scott? would Brandon Hicks(3B)/Diory Herandez(2B) and Jojo(LHP)/Morton(RHP) be enough?
Thanks for any replies

Actually, having Roberts signed probably improves his trade value if they are so inclined. You're less likely to give up as many players for a guy who could leave after one year. Having said that, why does the media continually harp on him being traded? It's not bad enough that all the false reports existed last year, but for some reason they keep inundating us with this bs. It's like the Peavy story all winter, it truly gets old after awhile. I bet even if he was dead there would be rumors about an impending trade, lol.

They should have already traded him. They should still trade him, at any time they can once they find the package they like. Cuz again, they have no shot in the division they are in. If the O's want any chance to compete in the AL east in the future they need some pitching and badly. they have enough offense even w/o roberts. Trade him and get some young pitchers.
