ESPN's Jerry Crasnick has a new article up looking at a bunch of free agents.
- Crasnick talked to one American League exec who views Pedro Martinez as "strictly a National League pitcher." Coupled with his price tag and long layoff, the market isn't big for Pedro.
- Ben Sheets is weeks away from a throwing program. He's probably a ten-start guy this year, but interest figures to be strong.
- Jim Edmonds hopes to sign by May. He'll need two to three weeks to get ready. Mark Grudzielanek also wants to play, and tells friends he only needs a week. He'll look for a contender, and the Royals will hope he signs before June so they get that supplemental draft pick. Jacque Jones is another guy who still hopes to play.
- Geoff Jenkins is taking grounders at first base to increase his versatility.
- Jay Payton suffered a shoulder injury lifting weights last month, but once he's healthy a few months from now he still wants to play.
- Nothing appears to be cooking for Frank Thomas and Luis Gonzalez, who could be forced to retire. Dave Roberts hasn't officially retired, but a comeback appears unlikely.
- Paul Byrd's plan remains unchanged: sign with a contender around July.
- Jon Lieber's agent says the pitcher has retired. 131 wins, including 20 in '01. Lieber finishes with a 4.27 ERA in 2,198 innings for the Pirates, Cubs, Yankees, and Phillies. He earned over $46MM, according to Baseball Reference.
I wish I could be a below average pitcher and say I'll wait until mid-season and sign with a contender.
You sure Payton wasn't trying to lift his ego? That thing is huge for a guy with no real talent.
And I love Pedro. He has been hurt the last few years but he thinks in this economy he deserves $5 mil plus incentives. Oops I mean they need to show him $5 mil in respect.

The best position player available isn't even listed: Catalanotto and Sheets will further push back some fans obsession and love affair with martinez, as will Byrd when he decides to pitch again (if he does)other than those, sure are some toasters on that list.. Thomas, Grudzy, Lieber, Payton.

Gruz and Durham could still be relevant for a team, as could Edmonds. Perhaps Toronto or Cleveland could use Jim off the bench?
If Pedro would halve his demands, he'd have a contract already. I don't know what he's demanding that ludicrous extra few million for - I'm really sick of it being all about the money. The dude's set for about 15 lifetimes.
The Indians wouldn't be foolish to sign Grudz either -he'd be a nice backup or compliment to Cabrera.

Hopefully Wang turns out all right and sooner than later but if he doesn't I would like to see my Yankees try and sign him. He is nasty when he is on top of his game and could be very helpful down the stretch.

My mistake. By him I meant Ben Sheets.

I think Edmonds proved last year that he still has something left in the tank. If not an everyday player, as a 4th outfielder he is worth a look for a contending team.

I saw Dave Roberts doing post-game commentary for the Giants. I don't really pay much attention to those shows but it didn't look like a guest spot.

He threw out the ball before the Red Sox game today. Think he is making hes farewell tour from the game it had the feel of from his playing days.

Pedro - I dont see many teams giving him the 5MM he wants but if he was willing to pitch for 3-4 + incentives I could see him joining a team within a couple weeks or less.
Sheets - Someone should sign this guy RIGHT NOW. Sure, he's hurt and you wont get him into your rotation for a while but in time he is almost guaranteed to be a stud top 1-2 starter on any team again so why not sign him now for what would likely be a great price and just wait for him to rehab.
Jim Edmonds - From what I have read, his asking price is fairly high and that needs to change before any team takes a serious look at him. But for a reasonable price, a lot of teams could use him. he still hits well, fields well and he is great with young players.
Mark Grudzielanek - He may have lost a few steps but he can still field very well and he is still going to provide great contact at the plate. Like Edmonds he is also known to be a good clubhouse guy.
Geoff Jenkins - Being that he was bought out and is willing to play for next to nothing, I dont see why a lot of teams wouldnt be on him. He wont hurt you in the field and he provides a pretty powerful left handed bat from either the bench or a DH role. In my opinion, he has the stuff to be an every day DH with a number of AL teams.
Paul Byrd - he wouldnt be a bad idea for a handful of teams if he signed for cheap. He could be a useful 4-5 starter or even a guy to eat some innings in the pen if needed.
Jacque Jones, Jay Payton, Frank Thomas, Luis Gonzalez and others I think are bound to sit and collect dust for various reasons and being that most teams have a low priced and hungry minor league veteran or prospect that could do the same job for less money and less hassle. The only guy out of that group that I could see getting a deal is maybe Payton because he is a good clubhouse guy and would probably play for real cheap.

OK, that was a pretty bad way to break down FAs. No one will sign sheets until hes healthy because he wont sign and that would cost the team a 1st rounder, or 2nd if protected.
Edmonds can field, but found the fountain of youth last yr to hit, after struggling horribly in SD, so much so the PADRES realeased him. And Edmonds said he just wants to play, money isnt an issue.
And, Payton, he got into a fight in Boston, which lead to his non return to Bos. They kept it quiet, but they were PO about it.
