A look at the latest from SI.com's Jon Heyman...
- Heyman addresses the issue of whether the Indians will trade staff ace Cliff Lee. GM Mark Shapiro isn't thinking about it (not under consideration, according to Ken Rosenthal), and rival execs are divided. Heyman says neither side made a contract extension proposal during the offseason. The Indians will have Lee through 2010 once they exercise his option.
- The Mets mulled calling up Fernando Martinez, but they'll stick to their plan of keeping him in Triple A until at least June.
- The Orioles are "seriously considering" drafting USC shortstop Grant Green with their #5 pick. However, the Padres are said to be eyeing Green at #3.
"# The Mets mulled calling up Fernando Martinez, but they'll stick to their plan of keeping him in Triple A until at least June."
Why?
If Delgado is out for a little while, wouldn't this be the perfect time to move Daniel Murphy to first base, with Martinez being called up to take over in left field?
Or would they prefer to trudge forward with Sheffield, Tatis and company?

I'm finding myself thinking that Green going in the top 5 is going to be a mistake.
I've heard/read from multiple scouting sources that there are major questions about Green's ability to stay at shortstop in the future, and if he can't play shortstop, then suddenly his bat becomes far less impressive as a third baseman or outfielder.
If I ran the Orioles' scouting department, unless Green just totally blew me away for whatever reason or Dustin Ackley is on the board at five somehow, I would look hard at pitching.
The Orioles have a lot of good positional pieces, but now they need some great pitching prospects to join Matusz, Tillman and Arrieta.

I would have thought Green's defensive issues would have hurt his draft stock, but I guess some teams still see him as a shortstop. The lack of college bats must be working to his advantage.

I feel like if the Orioles choose Grant Green, it will be based on the fact that he's a shortstop, and not because they believe that he's the best available player. And that's a crappy formula for player development.

If you want an immediate shortstop, take Ryan Jackson of Miami. He's much better defensively, and has about the same level of power (Green has *3* homers this year - alarming).

How about taking the best available player, and then when his trade value is high as a top prospect in a year, then trade him for a top young shortstop or SS prospect?
Why even risk taking a player that you don't believe is really worth the fourth pick in the draft?
This is simple: take the best player available.

The Indians have been in an interesting situation since the end of the Alomar/Thome/Ramirez/Vizquel glory days. If they trade Lee, they will have dealt away two Cy Young winners in as many seasons. But the Indians are old hands at maximizing value of ace arms; 5 years ago, they shipped Bartolo Colon to Montreal for Lee Stevens, Brandon Phillips, Grady Sizemore, and Cliff Lee himself. This speaks volumes about their front office fortitude, as well as their ability to recognize, cultivate, and negotiate for top-shelf talent. Last year, they grabbed Matt LaPorta from Milwaukee, who's already looking like a stud, along with three arms in exchange for Sabathia. Indeed, they could again find a favorable market for Lee among NL teams on the bubble, much as they did last year with CC. If Cleveland decides it's in their favor to deal their ace, you can bet they're going to get their money's worth.

If the Indians traded Cliff Lee, they would have without a doubt the worst rotation in the league. Even worse than the Washington Nationals or the Padres. I don't really see Lee as a guy who can bring in a top prospect or two, which is what they'd need, but who knows?

the baseball draft is unique in the fact that you do not draft for needs you draft best available. the o's should take pitching because they will need it playing the in AL East.

When you asked why, I thought you meant why would they even consider calling him up right now, and I was about to agree. Then I read the rest of your post and I don't agree he should be up here playing left field. Not now.
I agree that if Delgado goes down for an extended period, then Murphy should play first base. Now you have 3 guys, Sheffield, Tatis, and Church for Lf and RF. Church isn't hitting at all, but in Citi Field, you need his glove in RF out there most nights. He will still take most of the time there.
Now in LF, I definitely prefer Tatis OR Sheffield to Fernando at this point. Tatis has followed up his 300 PA of .300/.370/.480 last year with 900 OPS in 60 or so plate appearances this year. Sheffield hasn't had much success yet in terms of batting average, but he consistently puts together good at bats, watches tons of pitches, doesn't swing at balls, and has hit with some hard luck, with only a .230 babip. He (and other Mets) have also had some issues with the new field, crushing balls that didn't get out. I think Sheff can still hit, his batspeed is there, and with some regular at bats, he can go on a tear soon. I just don't think there is a reason to bring up Martinez at this point, when guys are fighting for playing time there as it is.

even though im in LA, i dont follow college baseball. However, they may feel that if he cant be a SS then a 2B. I know Roberts just signed a new deal, but he may not be ready in that contract time, so he can be the replacement.
As for Lee, he is one real question mark this yr. We know he'll put up good stats, but is he traded? We almost definetly know that Peavy and Bedard are probably gone, but he is an unknown.

Have these 'rival execs' seen the division the Indians are in? They were 4.5 games out of first place heading into play today.
If Lee was a free agent after this season then 'maybe' they'd think of trading him. But with him not being a free agent for over a year, there is zero chance he's traded this year.
The Indians are primed for a GREAT run in 2010. Westbrook will be healthy and in a contract year. Lee will be in a contract year. Martinez will be in a contract year. Wood could be in a contract year (has a vesting option for 2011).
That team could easily make a run at the World Series if they get their pen settled.
It makes ZERO sense to deal Lee now.

Wow, Green should not go in the top ten, in muy opinion.

I think the best bet to see Fernando Martinez play for the Mets soon, is in September, when they get the expanded rosters. I can't wait to see what Fernando Martinez brings to the Mets.
