Masahide Kobayashi Sent Down

10:19am: Castrovince says Kobayashi has accepted an assignment to Triple-A Columbus. Reliever Tony Sipp was also optioned to Columbus. The Indians also purchased the contract of reliever Greg Aquino who will join the ballclub today. To make room for Aquino, Scott Lewis was moved from the 15-day to the 60-day DL.

SATURDAY, 8:08pm: According to MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince, Indians reliever Masahide Kobayashi will be removed from the 40-man roster tomorrow to make room for David Huff.   Castrovince says it's unclear how this will be done - Kobayashi could be optioned to Triple A if he consents.  He wants to stay here rather than go back to Japan.

The Indians signed Kobayashi to a two-year, $6.25MM deal in November of 2007.  It seemed like a good idea at the time, but he posted a 5.10 ERA and 5.4 K/9 in 65.3 innings in his Tribe career.

Looking at his Japan stats, I think he has potential, if he can figure out American hitters. He could be a decent-good reliever, but I don't know.

By the way, wouldn't 65.3 innings be 66.0?

doesn't have velocity.

doesn't have movement.

tires out early from lack of work in japan.

good riddance.

65.3 = 65 1/3, not 66.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. So I guess I'll just quote you.

Like soxfan, I'm also used to, when referring to innings, using xx.1 for 1/3 and xx.2 for 2/3 of an inning. That's how most sites, shows, etc do it nowadays.

I'd be very, very surprised if Masa ever throws another pitch in the big leagues. My guess is that the Indians are working the phones to convert Garko, Shoppach, De Rosa etc. into arms. Now that the much too delayed Peralta to 3B has been successfully exectuted, De Rosa is more valuable as trade bait. Back to the Cubs? To the Reds? Garko is a surplus 1B/DH. The Mets? Shoppach is off to a slow start but he's a competent big league C. Any number of destinations for him. Toregas is an adequate back-up and Santana could be up before year's end.

So the hot dog eater wasn't taken off the 40 man roster after all.

Yes, Masa is off the roster. He accepted a non-roster minor league assignment.
