Olney On Penny, Reds, Braves

A few rumors from ESPN's Buster Olney (Insider link):

  • Olney says about six teams have talked to the Red Sox about Brad PennyGordon Edes suggested last night that the "Phillies, Brewers, Royals and possibly the Twins look like teams that could be in play for Penny."
  • The Reds are looking for outfield help.  Personally I'd like to see what the Laynce Nix/Jonny Gomes platoon can do over a full season.
  • Olney heard that "Atlanta hasn't gotten fully engaged yet" in their attempt to augment their outfield.
  • Olney talked to execs who like the fit of Jack Wilson in Boston.

"Olney heard that "Atlanta hasn't gotten fully engaged yet" in their attempt to augment their outfield."

Well FW better f*ckin get engaged or this season is gonna be another wash...I didn'y pay $150 for the MLB package to sit and watch Frenchy & K-Jordan strike out 3 times a game all goddamn season long...

What the hell is Wren waiting for? I could understand this if we had a 8 game lead but c'mon, we need to make a move very soon. Hopefully, he's just saying this b/c he doesn't want the media fiasco that he got w/ Peavy and Furcal!

It would be nice to see Wilson in Boston on a winning team. Good fit.

would a Jack Wilson for Julio Lugo work for the pirates? maybe if the sox kick in half of Lugo's salary? Pirates fans what do you think?

"would a Jack Wilson for Julio Lugo work for the pirates? maybe if the sox kick in half of Lugo's salary? Pirates fans what do you think?"

Dancing in the streets of Boston and he would be forced to walk the plank in Pittsburgh..

Honestly, anybody that has seen him this year isn't going to take Lugo period. He has -0- range now and STILL throws the ball away and can't catch it. Why would anybody help Boston by paying one dime of his contract?

I've talked to Yankees fans who would also love the fit of Jack Wilson in Boston.

I'd be a little surprised if the Twins trade for Penny, getting someone to pitch the 8th inning is more of a need than another starter. Not to mention that Swarzak was impressive in his debut with Perkins on the DL.

What the hell would the Pirates want with Julio Lugo? They wouldn't take him if the BoSox paid his entire salary. Ridiculous.

agreed lugp hasn't been any good for what 4yrs now? it would take a B level prospect not a pathetic 33 or so year old

What's the attraction of Brad Penny? He's terrible.

The Red Sox would have to give up a prospect to get anyone to take part of Lugo's salary.

I never thought Smoltz would replace Penny when he was ready, but what are you going to do, just goes to show you that baseball is always a surprise.

I think the Red Sox may stabilize when Smotlz is ready, atleast hopefully.

As far as Lugo, I take a bag of rusty bent nails for him at this point. Yankees recycling heap in Green has put a bigger then thought smile on my face

Time we package Jeffy Poo with 2 or 3 others to get a BIG bat. Send Jordan down and get Blanco in there permanently for now. Or just rehaul the entire outfield. Keep Diaz and just get fresh faces throughout.

"What's the attraction of Brad Penny? He's terrible."

Upside can be found. His era is through the roof, but he is striking guys out. His contract is purely no risk for almost all 30 teams and suits the 4-5 spot perfectly. He can anchor a team if he has a wicked second half too, this of course is most likely not to happen at this point of course

The braves need to get a move on. We need outfield help. It would be ideal to get someone like Jermaine Dye, Magglio ordonez to play right field. Then sign jim edmonds to platoon with schafer.

Wilson = More Shortstop Epic FAIL in Boston

about the braves though it has been rumored on a couple of sites they would like to maybe do a chalie morton or kris medlen or todd redmond swap for ludwick. Personally a guy i'd like to see in a braves uniform is chris duncan. if you take his career averages over 600ab's you get

.265/.353./.509 32hr 101rbi. the guy can swing it if he gets consistent playing time, he is cost controled, and he can be gone by mid 2010 or start of 2011 for heyward

Agree on a Nix/Gomes platoon. You could certainly do much worse.

Need OF Help??? two words - ERIC BYRNES!!!!11!!!

Granted the Braves need to act now, but bringing up Blanco and his .215 batting average isn't exactly what I'd call upgrading. They need to talk to the Angels about Willits for that spot, he'd be relatively cheap and could hit the leadoff spot. I know he's only hitting about .250 but his experience makes him a much more solid bet than Schafer at this point. Plus he's disposable once Schafer is truly ready. Do that then go after Dye or Willingham, preferably Dye, but Willingham still has two more years of arb and would surely hit better with more consistent ABs.

"Send Jordan down and get Blanco in there permanently for now."

Schafer in the MAJORS - .208/.324/.302/.626

Blanco in the MINORS - .222/.321/.275/.597

Why????

The Braves need to stop pretending that Garrett Anderson is still useful as a ballplayer. Wren gambled and lost. Let's cut our losses and move on.

Diaz is the only usable piece in that outfield right now. Schafer has lots of potential, but needs to be platooned for the moment.

i also like the gomes and nix platoon. it actually could be really successful. gomes has serious power against lefties and hit like .285 against them in 07. nix has also been successful against rightiest throughout his career. i don't think it's ubsurd to think they could combine for 20-25 hr's the rest of the way

"Upside can be found. [Penny's] era is through the roof, but he is striking guys out."

Um, what? His K/9 is 5.4. I don't get the interest in Penny either - he really hasn't been good since 2007, end even then he wasn't striking a lot of people out.

"Um, what? His K/9 is 5.4. I don't get the interest in Penny either - he really hasn't been good since 2007, end even then he wasn't striking a lot of people out."

He is a NL pitchering in the AL coming of injury, of course the numbers will be up. He is a more then suitable replacement for Jamie Moyer whos ERA is higher and K/9 is even lower in an easier league. Penny does help a NL team. I dont see how he helps the Twins though...

"Diaz is the only usable piece in that outfield right now. Schafer has lots of potential, but needs to be platooned for the moment."

You don't platoon a prospect of Schafer's caliber. Either live with him full time in MLB, or send him down to start full time in AAA.

I think gorky's might be ready in a few weeks. he is hitting .335/.387 with 9sb at AA

Melonis, in a year of reading MLBTR, I have yet to ever disagree with anythig you ever say.

Call me crazy, but would looking into Kenny Lofton be an idea for the Braves? If he gets in shape, he could be helpful. How's Preston Wilson doing in the indies? Neither of these guys could hurt the Braves outfield further at this point, and both would probably have no risk whatsoever.

"Upside can be found. [Penny's] era is through the roof, but he is striking guys out."

Ask the 5 teams he has already beaten what his upside is and am sure they can tell you.

If you have not seen him pitch this year and only look at his stats that were mostly inflated from 2 of his really horrible starts early on, sure he looks like trash, but his starts since number 2 and 3 have been getting progressively better and better, thus the 5-1 record.

Edes and Olney are trying to make a market for Penny as they do for all the players Boston wants to dump.Penny has an era through the roof and pitches no more than six innings. He is a #5 at best.

"He is a NL pitchering in the AL coming of injury, of course the numbers will be up. He is a more then suitable replacement for Jamie Moyer whos ERA is higher and K/9 is even lower in an easier league. Penny does help a NL team. I dont see how he helps the Twins though..."

I'm not thrilled with your assault on the English language, but I'm pretty sure your argument is that because the Phillies have an expensive ($6.5 million) and currently bad pitcher in Moyer, it makes sense for them to acquire another expensive ($5 million) and currently bad pitcher in Penny?

Do not want.

"You don't platoon a prospect of Schafer's caliber. Either live with him full time in MLB, or send him down to start full time in AAA."

It's been my understanding that the objective of baseball is to win games. There's no reason you can't continue to develop a prospect in a situation where he sees less playing time, especially since he leads MLB in strikeouts.

If Jim Edmonds wants to play ball, the Braves could do worse. I'd love to see them add him and Byrnes.

preston leads the long island ducks in hr's(9) and k's(71) he's batting .212

No one is 'fighting' over Penny. Teams that are looking for starters are simply doing due diligence, because everyone knows the Red Sox really, really want to get Penny out of their rotation in time to make room for Smoltz, or Buchholz and Bowden.

No one - repeat - NO ONE, is going to give up anyone of significance for Penny. Randy Wolf, a far better pitcher than Penny, netted a 26 year old organizational starter. Even with the Sox likely having to front all of Penny's remaining salary, he won't net much of anything better than that. Please don't fool yourselves into thinking there will be some kind of 'bidding' war for Red Sox crap. It never happens.

I think it's safe to say the Sox won't be getting a young near MLB ready catcher in a deal for Penny, maybe low level catching prospect but no one they should expect to replace Tek.

Most of the Penny comments seem to be of the 'I saw him pitch once awhile ago and he was awful' variety. He's much better lately than he was last season or even last spring when his rehab had just ended. It takes time to recover arm strength and his latest outings show steady improvement in velocity and control (again, you have to actually watch him pitch...the stats don't tell the whole story). Unless Boston finds a quick deal they just can't resist Penny might make a few more starts for them before a trade happens (likely around mid-June)...and those starts could be key to his final trade value.

Rumors are that Boston wants a decent prospect for Penny but there are some MLB players that could make for interesting straight-up trades. Willie Bloomquist of the Royals and Matt Stairs of the Phillies are two that come to mind who could each fill a current need for the Sox. Would love to see Boston make a deal for the Rangers' Marlon Byrd...but Penny alone wouldn't be enough.

As for Jack Wilson...umm no thanks.

"As for Jack Wilson...umm no thanks"

As if the Sox had a better option on their roster.....

Sadly these kind of deals seem to be the only ones the Phillies know how to make. Overpaying in prospects for washed up rental pitchers that are #4's at best and usually #5's. I could actually see them giving the Red Sox Marson for Penny, which is of course ridiculous. They need to be talking to the Red Sox about Masterson, Bowden, and Bucholz. Time for them to realize that they need to get as many young, cost controlled, front of the rotation pitchers as they possibly can.

They will always be able to convince hitters to come play in that bandbox, but never good pitchers. That stadium along with their ridiculous ideal of never giving more than 3 year contracts to pitchers is why the only FA pitchers they can attract are the likes of Adam Eaton. So the more good young pitchers they can get, the better they will be. The rotations of a #1 and a bunch of back end guys aren't cutting it anymore.

If Penny has a couple more solid starts, I could see something like this three-way deal happening:

Phils get Brad Penny
Red Sox get Jack Wilson
Pirates get Jason Donald

IMHO we don't need a Lofton/Edmunds/Byrnes/Wilson type of player, they need an IMPACT bat, someone that can hit the longball, and right now the only viable options in that category are Mags, Dye, and Holliday.

Thats not to say anyone else wouldn't be an upgrade over the "K-Team", but we don't need another aging bat, we need the REAL DEAL to give BMac some protection & drive in runs.

"How about Byrd and Teagarden for Penny and Bard?"

Teagarden > Bard

Byrd >= Penny (depends on how Penny does and how much PT Byrd sees)

Teagarden wont be dealt unless an SP prospect is coming back in the deal IMO.

I do not want to see Jack Wilson in Boston. Come the All-Star break Jed Lowrie may very well be ready to play, and we don't need another overpriced one trick pony SS. Nick Green is hitting just fine, and we are in first place. Jack Wilson is a good defensive SS, but has no other notable talent. So yeah Green sucks on D, but our team can probably survive all the same. At least until someone worth acquiring becomes available.

my original post didnt add in the 'lol i wish'. but i'd love to see the sox trade penny while his value is high. I personally see the White Sox as a team that should be actively in on Penny.

The Sox might not have a better on-roster option but they certainly have the brains to know a poor option when they see one.

"How about Byrd and Teagarden for Penny and Bard?

Boston might make that deal but I don't think Texas would. Based on the Rangers' dealings so far it would take the moon and a small piece of Mars to get Teagarden or Salty. I'd rather try to pry Ianetta from the Rockies or Martinez from the Indians than try to meet Texas' demands for one of their we'll- keep'em-till-they-rot' prospect catchers.

Its going to be pretty funny to see everyone's reaction when the Sox do trade Penny and get something of value in return. 6 Wins, possibly more, a prospect, and holding down the fort until Smoltz or Buchholz is ready, all for $5 million and a uniform... Theo earns his money.

The Red Sox have a SS, Jed Lowrie, yes he is not Hanley Ramirez, but he could be Jason Bartlet who seems to do fine in the AL-East.

"Willie Bloomquist of the Royals and Matt Stairs of the Phillies are two that come to mind who could each fill a current need for the Sox."

I was all for signing Bloomquist as a FA over the winter. The guy plays 7 positions, has speed and is a quality guy off the bench, but the Sox just would not stomach up to cutting ties to Lugo and eating his contract and now they need to go ahead and do it before he hurts them even more.

Penny will bring back something of value, no doubt about it, unless he tanks or goes down with an injury in the next couple of weeks. After a shaky April, he's been a solid #3-#4 starter type. That's worth something - not what the Phils paid for Blanton last year because Penny will be a free agent after this year, but definitely more than a bag of baseballs.

Laynce Nix and Jonny Gomes are beast.

The Braves need to make a move now and get Juan Pierre. He hits for average and it would give them the lead off hitter they desperately need. His arm is weak, but he has speed too. Look elsewhere for power.

Question? If Smoltz came back and became the Sox #5 and proceeded to avg 6 IP and gave up 3 runs or less per start would Sox fans consider that a good job?

they can get pierre on july 6, day after manny comes back

how about the braves call up barbaro carnizares and see what the 31 year old rookie can do

------------

The reason why I ask this question is because Penny is doing exactly that:

6 IP, 3 runs or less in 6 of his 9 starts. AN excellent job for a #5 starter playing on a very good hitting team. Regardless of who's coming off the DL, why the rush to trade this guy when you have ZERO idea of how well Smoltz will pitch?

DO you think the Braves might take a chance w/ a AAA guy who couldn't buy his way into the Yanks lineup right now?

Shelly Duncan, age 28. Leading AAA in Hrs and rbi.

.295/.369, 15 hrs and 40 rbis

I was personally a little dissapointed that Wren signed Anderson over Edmonds, so I wouldn't be completely against it. But it would need to be just the first of more moves in the OF. I think it might be an option to send Schafer back down to Gwinnett and bring in Edmonds on an incentive laden deal to man CF part time along with some other combination of Braves OF after trading for a difference maker.

But Byrnes would not be a good option, unless the D-backs would trade him for a bundle of bats and pay his salary. He is no good anymore

Tim Wakefield has made a career of pitching with Avg stats like that YFS78 and won 184 games along the way. It's good enough for the Sox lineup to win games and yeah.. I imagine they would be happy. I would on avg, especially with the shutdown BP that Boston has to follow up from the 7th inning on.

If Smoltz does go back on DL later this summer, they have both Bucholz and Bowden to follow and odds are that both won't fail, they also have retread Enrique Gonzalez at AAA in case of emergency.

hey guys! anyone wanna jump in and help me with this new website?
http://whiffletraderumors.webs.com/

It just seems like most people, Sox fans and others, are quick to dump this guy. And if they feel he's so expendable then what exactly do they expect to get back in return to help them on the major league level?

As a Braves fan I really like the idea of getting Shin-Soo Choo from the Indians. Maybe Francoeur, Reyes, and Campillo/Acosta would do.

"It just seems like most people, Sox fans and others, are quick to dump this guy. And if they feel he's so expendable then what exactly do they expect to get back in return to help them on the major league level?"

I really don't think they are looking for anything at the MLB level by himself YFS78, rather a good/decent prospect by himself, or use him with another piece to get a bat/SS if Lowrie is still hurting from his wrist surgery upon his return in 2-3 weeks.

The Sox need to make room for Smoltz/Bucholz and I also don't think that they can get enough relief innings for Masterson out of the BP. it sounds crazy, but they may have too many good relievers at the moment and Masterson needs to start IMO.

To go with above post and Sox/BB fans may fry me..

get Dice-K on track and might see him go also.

Wouldn't mind the braves adding Pierre, but only if the Dodgers are willing to eat atleast half that salary. Lets not forget this is still Juan Pierre and he's still owed right around 25.6M for the rest of this season and the next two. If I remember correctly Dodgers ownership has a real problem eating salary and are probably even less likely to do so after the Andruw Jones fiasco. Probably no way they get this into the Braves' price range. I say go after Willingham. Wren won't risk another collossal screw up on a rental(I klnow technically JS pulled that trigger) so that pretty much kills any chance of Dye or Holliday.

SINCE78, I don't think its so much sox fans wanting to get rid of Penny as it is the anticipation of Smolts debut and/or call up of Buchholz! We simply have a luxury and look forward to seeing what Theo can fetch back for Penny thats all! Also the main reason for getting Smoltz is to have him in top for, hopefully, a playoff run. A healthy Smoltz vs. Penny is no contest. Penny for Marson or packaged with Bard for Teagarden would work for me!

I agree...at least for now, the Reds are fine with Gomes/Nix in LF. Their youthful enthusiasm is helping this team and it's something you can't trade for. And with the Reds just 1.5 games out of the division lead, Jocketty shouldn't tinker too much with the roster. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Both of those guys are older than the 3 Reds opening day OFs.

I still think Matt Holliday would look great in a Reds uniform. Just watch him mash homers out of Great American Ballpark. Although, Billy Beane asks for too much in trades.

Not Joe Morgan...

I'll give you Bruce, but Hairston is older than both Nix and Gomes by about 4 years and McDonald shouldn't count since he only started because Taveras was sick. So I don't understand your point.
