According to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Pirates signed catcher Adam Melhuse and assigned him to Triple-A Indianapolis. Melhuse is a 37-year-old switch hitter who caught part-time for eight seasons, most recently with the Rangers and Rockies last year. The move gives the Pirates depth behind Jason Jaramillo, who has surprised with an .847 OPS since starting for the injured Ryan Doumit.

Good depth pickup. Melhuse was hitting well in spring for the Rangers, and while Jaramillo and Robinzon Diaz have hit reasonably well for the Pirates, he's a good insurance policy. I'm not used to the Pirates making good moves, but this is one of them.

Yah, it always helps young catchers to have a veteran catcher along side them. Having 2 young catchers on one team doesnt make for the best developmental situation unless were talking about a team managed by an ex catcher or with an ex catcher on the managerial staff.
