« Odds & Ends: Webb, Padres, Corpas, Nationals | Main | Discussion: Which Team Has The Best Young Core? »
Talking Chop reports that the Braves signed utilityman Chris Burke to a minor league deal. Burke, 29, has played every position but pitcher and catcher in the major leagues. In 32 games with the Padres this year, Burke's OPS was .575. More recently, he played in Triple A Tacoma in the Mariners' organization.

Good sign. Burke > Norton. Didn't Burke hit the walkoff homer in the 05 NLDS against Joey Devine?

woo hoo?
Braves should be spending on a new corner OF, not minor leaguers.

"Braves should be spending on a new corner OF, not minor leaguers."
If there were some available, they probably would of traded for one by now.

"More recently, he played in Triple A Tacoma in the Mariners' organization."
Eh.. incorrect. Padres had him, Mariners claimed him and played him in AAA for a while, then gave him back to the Padres when they needed a SS.

Why? He may be better than Norton but Brooks Conrad is better than him and Infante will be back in a few weeks. Eh, I guess you can never have to much depth.
Posted by: bravoboy10 | June 19, 2009 at 10:21 PM
Because Brooks Conrad can't play short and the team's only depth is Diory Hernandez. A decent move to add some depth but shouldn't have much effect on anything.

I<3Braves yes that was Burke who hit the walkoff. ARGH!
Posted by: ChiefTomahawk | June 19, 2009 at 10:26 PM
More importantly I think this means that they are gonna try and move Prado as the everyday secondbase and trade away Johnson...Since Infante went down this is the move that needed to be made...
Posted by: Bravesfan13 | June 19, 2009 at 11:11 PM
This signing is completely insignificant. He's just taking Diory's place in AAA.
Posted by: PWHjort | June 19, 2009 at 11:11 PM
No it allows Parado to start instead of Johnson who is sukin dik...Everything the braves do doesn't have to be Front page. I think this is great. Prado needs to start at second which is his most natural Position
Posted by: Bravesfan13 | June 19, 2009 at 11:13 PM
Do you realize he's not going to the big club? He's going to AAA. And will stay there all season. Well, most likely. If anything he'll get fired when Infante returns and Diory goes back down. The only thing that's keeping Prado from playing is our idiot manager, not that we don't have options.
Posted by: PWHjort | June 19, 2009 at 11:19 PM
Actually, He will prolly be in AAA for about a week then get brought up and Diory sent down. This was a signing to counter Infante getting hurt becuase Prado is the only other Super utility man so thats the reason why. Cox isn't an idiot he wouldn't possibly be one of the best managers ever if he was. This isn't amateur hour on MLBTR.

Burke is an ok not going to change anything sign. He'll be taking Diory's spot on the team very soon because he can play all over the field and Diory needs more playing time in AAA. Util players are good to have, now lets just find a replacement for RF

bobby unfortunately has become one of the worst in game managers, his lineup and handling of a bullpen proves it. However he remains arguably the greatest locker room coach in the sport and his players love him, no he's not an idiot but he is making a lot of questionable decisions ie why is jeff still playing

The HR that Burke hit off Devine in 2005 (the last time that the Braves has been in the playoffs) was a cheapy. That would have been a flyball out in most other ball park than the Juice Box in Houston.
I don't know if Omar Infante suffered a setback, but I guess this is a cheap insurance policy against that.
The Braves definitely need someone more like Norton (that potentially has more pop) than someone like Burke.

Pretty sure no MLB team needs someone like Norton. He's 4-for-summer, man.

i think this is the writing on the wall for kelly johnson. Burke can play everywhere and he is in AAA just to tune up, then when he is called up they will have infante, prado, burke and johnson....Infante will be starting as soon as he is back. kelly johnson for a case of budlight and a pack of smokes?
Posted by: nathan | June 20, 2009 at 10:18 AM
i'd much rather have burke out there than johnson. he can probably hit for better average and he's better defensively
Posted by: beastuh26 | June 20, 2009 at 12:13 PM
Far from a significant move but not a bad one. Omar's several weeks away from returning (right?) and you can at least put Burke out there as a defensive replacement for any of seven positions.
