Discussion: Ben Sheets

We haven't checked in on Ben Sheets for quite some time.  In fact, MLBTR's last update on the free agent right-hander was in early May, when he was spotted at the Rangers' ballpark visiting with pitching coach Mike Maddux.

The Rangers were the favorite to sign Sheets when the '09 season began, but have said recently that they're not likely to add payroll for an elite starter.  The 30-year-old began performing range-of-motion exercises in mid-June and hopes to game-ready by August.  Even if he's not healthy until September, you can bet contending teams will make a run at the four-time All-Star.

I thought it'd be interesting to poll the MLBTR community.  Which clubs seem like a good fit? Every major league team can use a front-line starter, but he'll probably want a shot at a ring and a relatively hefty contract.

I know the Cardinals would love to have him, but if they're serious in their pursuit of Matt Holliday they probably won't have enough left over for Ben.

Toronto has had their starting pitching rocked by injuries, imagine a healthy Halladay, Sheets, plus some young guys like Ricky Romero on the back end of that rotation. Combine that with their up and coming offense and that just might be enough to put them over the top even in that tough division.

I think the Cardinals may be able to afford both Sheets and Holliday, if and only if they expected to keep one of them after this season.

@Cardinals Fan Forever. I think they'll be able to "afford" both too, but you know how management operates in St. Louis. They don't like to stretch their wallets.

No doubt about that. If they were to make a trade for Holliday, they would probably try to resign him. The only probably there is that they need to work on Pujols's next contract while they are at it.

@Cardinals Fan Forever. Right, that's obviously something to think about and would warrant the Cardinals playing it "cheap." As a Birdnals fan myself, though, I can't say I'm pleased.

This team hasn't been given a real refresher since 2006 (some might argue 2004).

How about the Mets? I know they need offense, but they could use a starter as well. Or 2.

I would not consider Sheets an elite starter. Rangers make some sort of sense because of Mike Maddux, but the ballpark really doesnt.

Personally, i think teams like Cubs, White Sox, Dodgers, Cardinals, Brewers, and Philadelphia.

Sheets would cerstainly be a big risk for whatever team takes him but if he comes back healthy he most certainly is an elite starter.

I don't think he'll pitch this season though, I bet he has at least some minor setback during his rehab.

@GmblngPtchr20. Not an elite starter? Why? Because of the health issues? If you've seen Sheets at his best, it's very clear he is "elite."

Look for him in an Astros uni. They'll continue their trend of second half pushes (they're acting like an engine trying to turnover currently) and Uncle Drayton is desperate as ever to prove we're a winning ball club.

@dejota. Ha, I like it. Doubt the Astros all you want in late June, but they always seem to make a second-half run.

I kind of doubt the payroll is there, though.

bet the cards, mets, & phils will take a long, hard look

I personally would like a pass on Holliday and make a push for Juan Pierre. That would give us a true leadoff man and something that has not been on the team forever... SPEED. After that, make a push for DeRosa and possibly try to obtain a #4/5 starter to replace Wellemeyer. I'd consider Sheets.

Albert Pujols will leave St. Louis If they don't put a team around him. I'd say Matt Holliday and Ben sheets would be a good start, hell go for Juan Pierre too. Albert can't go on being the one man scoring machine he was today. this is getting ridiculous.

It has to be true contenders. Therefore, Angels, Dodgers, Cubs, maybe white Sox, Texas because he is working there, Cards, etc. I dont think hed go to the AL East because he would get bounced around in the hitter friendly parks and DH rule...

If his arm holds up, every team in the AL West could use him, but I'd LOVE for the Mariners to look into him.

Giants get Nick Johnson in a trade that involves Jonathan Sanchez. Giants sign Ben Sheets, assembling the greatest rotation ever. Ben Sheets throws one pitch for the Giants, a 97 MPH fastball that takes Manny Ramirez's head off. Manny Ramirez dies. Ben sheets tests positive for steroids, nullifying his contract. Giants use that money to bring back Barry Bonds. Giants win world series.

The Giants retire Ben Sheets jersey. The Red Sox, following trend, sign Sheets to a 1 day contract and then retire his jersey.

Ben Sheets becomes the only player in MLB history to have his jersey retired by pitching a combined 1 pitches for both teams.

What a bad joke. Seriously. I can't believe you decided to post something else 9 minutes after your original abomination instead of letting it die.

Phillies or Angels. The Phils are hurting and the Angels need one more starter to put them over the top.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8r9lRJ6yHY Ah sniffly poo!

Watch out! It's pkharkin... all baseball, all serious... ALL the time!

I've said it before and i;ll say it again the White Sox.

With Omar refusing to empty the farm, he NEEDS to consider it. I don't trust Maine or Ollie and I have no clue what's going on with Pelf.

Great update! Now can we get one on Mulder?

Since when did the White Sox become "true contenders". They don't even approach that status.

Depending on how soon he is expected to be able to pitch, he makes sense for the Mets, if for no other reason that he would make Maine (if healthy) or Perez (if healthy, and with a lot of money thrown in or offset coming the other way) expendable- with so many teams in contention, it would behoove the Mets to be in position to be able to trade with a team that isn't just looking to dump this season, but be able to make a pitcher for hitter swap. You know, like an old fashioned baseball trade.

@"True Contenders"

Define in contention? As of writing this 21 of the teams in the league are within 6.0 games of their division lead. If last year's deadline taught us anything (LaTroy comes to mind) very few teams are out of contention by July 31st.

Even if you take away 6 teams like the pirates who qualified for my count you're still talking half the league.

The most important factor in determining which teams will be interested in Sheet's services would be how long and how much Sheets wants. If he expects less than a year or two anybody could be players.

@ jakec: No offense but what kind of hitter do you think the Mets could get for the oft-injured Maine or the overpaid and inconsistent Perez? They'd have to pay 80% of Perez' salary for the remainder of the contract to give him even mediocre worth.

Neither player has much trade value; an average MLB player at best. That might be an upgrade considering the injuries, but I highly doubt the Mets up their payroll by $15mm+ (which Sheets will cost) to still have a rotation with holes plus a mediocre bat.

Angels, Phillies or Rangers will get Sheets.

Not sure Texas can afford to wait for Sheets to get back. They need to make up their minds quick and decide right now if they are going to chuck this season when they had an actual an chance to win the AL West for a change, or trade a catcher and prospects and find the pitching that they dearly need to try and get back into competition with the Angels.

Anaheim has only one real problem that will not fix itself soon: a BP arm and it can be fixed fairly cheap, while Texas needs serious rotational problems.

Texas may have a deep farm system and can say they were not counting on winning this year, blah, blah.. But the fact is, they find themselves with a chance to actually get an AL West crown here that can be picked up for a spare catcher *maybe* and it is up to them whether or not they blow it.

Imagine Seattle would not be willing to deal Bedard to them, nor would Peavy be willing to waive his NT clause to go to Texas, but imagine Oswalt would enjoy Texas and he would be a true #1 and fan friendly as well, plus Salty or Teagarden would fill a need as a catcher on Houston, just give them another young pitcher.

Houston would have absolutely 0 need for a catcher. Towles, despite what you think or don't think of him, is almost ready plus we used our first last year on Castro and before that we drafted Max Sapp in 2006. Not saying anything about the trio, but we have plenty of young catching.

At least, as an Astros fan, I pray I'm right about that. Either way I'm at my wits end with him. I'm certainly a minority in that opinion, but the guy has not been his great self since Garner implanted the idea of pitching to contact.

I'll take 6 innings of 1 or 2 run ball with 10Ks guaranteed for the hope he could be stretched into the 8th or 9th by giving hitters pitches to hit. Anyways, this is getting long-winded for a comment but bottom line: A young catcher like Salty or Teagarden shouldn't be a target or acceptable return for Roy.

If you folks lived in Milwaukee like me you'd realize Benny has no chance to pitch this year....check into his injurious career and vertigo problems (inner ear infection?). He's a stud, a fantastic community guy, but unfortunately cannot sustain a bug free season, let alone a rehab and hired gun scenarioo.
