« Rangers To Sign Mike Hinckley | Main | Miguel Cairo Designated For Assignment »
We have a Ben Sheets sighting, courtesy of MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan. Sheets appeared at The Ballpark In Arlington today to visit with Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux. The free agent pitcher spoke of an upcoming meeting with Dr. James Andrews after which he hopes to be cleared to begin a throwing program (he had flexor tendon elbow surgery on February 13th).
The Rangers are the obvious favorites to sign Sheets later this year, especially if they remain in contention. But Sheets says he hasn't started worrying about where he'll sign yet.

Is Sheets still under Brewers control, technically, until he signs with someone else? Could this be considered tampering in any way?

He should sign with the White Sox

He's not under team control because he's a FA. He still is a type A FA and if the Rangers sign him before the draft, Brewers get draft picks. If he signs after the draft, Brewers get nothing.

I thought if he signed before May 1 the Brewers received draft picks, if he signed after May 1 the Brewers received nothing. Unless they changed the rules?

not 100%, but i think they changed it this offseason that if anyone is signed before the draft, then the former team gets the picks

WRS71287 - that is correct. Ben Sheets is a Type A FA, so, if were to be signed by another team before May 1st, the Brewers would receive the signor's first round pick in addition to a supplemental first round pick.
rememberthecoop - Sheets is no longer under the Brewer organization's control whatsoever.
I hope my Mets are in on any potential mid-season Sheets derby, although a potential ace makes sense for just about any contender.

I don't think the Brewers offered him arbitration, so any team is free to sign him without losing a DP of any kind.

Would Ranger fans do this?
Trade Hamilton and Netfali Feliz for Jake Peavy and Adrian Gonzalez

"Trade Hamilton and Netfali Feliz for Jake Peavy and Adrian Gonzalez"
Good question, but I think those are two of the most untouchable guys we have. Hamilton is able to put up Adrian Gonzalez type numbers even though he is off to a slow start compared to last year, and he is as big as a fan favorite as there can be in MLB. We also have Davis at first with Smoak waiting in the wings so no need to add another first baseman. We would love to have Peavy without a doubt, but Feliz is probably the one pitcher that we wouldn't include in a deal for him, same as when the Braves wouldn't include Hanson in the deal for him in the offseason.

The Padres shouldn't do that deal.
Hamilton is *very slightly* better than Gonzalez. However, he's controlled for one more year than Gonzalez is, so he's worth a good bit more.
Neftali Feliz is a potential ace. Peavy is already an ace.
Proven ace >>>>> potential ace.

I agree...Feliz himself wouldn't be enough to get Peavy, it would take a package to get him, but there is no way Feliz would be included in it.

He should sign with the White Sox

If there was any team that needs Starting Pitching and still is in contention for a division, it would definitely be the White Sox.

Come July Sheets will be in the Rangers minor league system getting ready for late in the season. I expect the Rangers to get a bargain on him as well, signing him for 3 yrs or so, though i'm not sure the kind of money they will give a guy just off of arm trouble.

Why would we want Gonzalez back we got Davis and Smoak ready to come on and play. The only pitcher i would trade for is Roy Halladay and if he not avaliable, we sign Sheets and kick either Feldman or McCarthy outta the rotation. And if a trade were to be made for the Rangers it would be for bullpen help.

I dont wanna sound like an a$$, but if sheets is coming off surgery and his control probably wont be top notch, why would he go to Texas, one of the best hitters park, to try to come back?
Posted by: lakersdodgersyankees4life | May 16, 2009 at 09:48 PM
Ben Sheets lives in Texas thats why he would sign there, so yes, you now sound like an A$$!
