"# This Chicago Sun-Times article blames Jim Hendry for assembling an expensive group of under-performing hitters, but credits him for putting together some solid pitching."
He locked up a core of Zambrano, Ramirez, Soriano, Fukudome, Bradley and Dempster for big money, and I don't think that there's a single Cub fan that is happy about that.
Obviously Zambrano and Dempster have been quite solid this year, but the Soriano deal is going to go down as one of the worst in history.

thank you cubs for signing soriano. the phils made a big run at him that year.

"But Cubs' Hendry has team in better shape to contend than Sox' Williams"
Actually, I disagree with this. At least the Sox have more ammo in the minors to make a deadline deal. And fewer bad contracts (more payroll flexibility).
1- Aaron Miles is, was, and always will be awful.
2- Dempster was a market aberration. AKA overpayment.
Although I do think the Sox' salary dumps were stupider than the Cubs' dump (and non-dump of Lee).

Dumping Lee would have cost us over 25 million dollars if we did that this Spring. We're kinda stuck with him, unless the Giants want to assume his contract.
I can't wait until he and Fukudome are gone. And Bradley is one big pain in the ass.

Here we go again with people...
1. The Cubs starters will not be this good all year, but they will still be a strength
2. The Cubs hitting will get better, maybe even a lot better.
3. Some of Hendry's deals were bad, some are excellent.
4. "Zambrano, Ramirez, Soriano, Fukudome, Bradley and Dempster" Lets add Lee in there as well
Great deal - Ramirez
Good deal - Z, Lee
Average deal - Dempster, Fukudome (remember, Kenny was going to give him MORE! Can't fault the Cubs because Fukudome preferred them)
Bad - Soriano
Bradley - We are like an eighth of the way through his contract. He probably overpaid here though, but I still think Bradley will help a lot more by years end.
And as the author points out, you HAVE to give Hendry some credit for assembling the #1 starting staff in baseball right now

"1- Aaron Miles is, was, and always will be awful."
Aaron Miles is in my opinion the worst player in the game that is under contract for next season.
He's a below average defensive player that has no plate discipline and no power. He's absolutely worthless and yet Hendry still gave him 2/4.9, which I found laughable from the moment I read it.
"2- Dempster was a market aberration. AKA overpayment."
Actually, Dempster has quietly lived up to his big contract so far. He's still posting similar K/BB numbers, and while his HR/FB ratio has increased to the mean, he's still posted a very solid 4.03 FIP and a 3.87 ERA in 81 innings.
If this is the real Dempster, then Hendry made a genius move by making him a starter again. I just hope that his arm is okay from all those years of closing and then pitching 207 innings last season.

Fukudome has been pretty good this year. .363 wOBA and he has been very good in RF. He has been worth 1.9 WAR for them so far this year.
Posted by: nrmax88 | June 16, 2009 at 12:48 PM
That being said, there are definitely some bad decisions that he made:
1. Derosa. Given Ramirez' injury, you could use this for one, two, and three. This one really hurt.
2. Miles was bad...very bad.
3. There just had to be a better relief option than Gregg out there that we could have snagged for Ceda, right??

"Fukudome has been pretty good this year. .363 wOBA and he has been very good in RF. He has been worth 1.9 WAR for them so far this year."
Actually, Fukudome has been the primary everyday center fielder for Chicago, and he's been a really pleasant surprise, although to be fair I kind of expected him to be better than he was last season. His +7.8 UZR/150 in center this year has been really nice.

I feel like if we had gone to Oakland and offered something like Ceda and an additional prospect for Huston Street, there's a decent chance that we could have pried him before he got dealt to Colorado.
They definitely didn't get enough value for Ceda though.
Posted by: scribbletone | June 16, 2009 at 12:51 PM
We could have probably gotten Capps or Lindstrom for much less than Ceda.
Posted by: www.homehalfway.net | June 16, 2009 at 12:54 PM
I doubt that the Pirates would've dealt Capps to the Cubs last winter, that's not really the way to endear your new front office to the fan base.
Posted by: scribbletone | June 16, 2009 at 12:57 PM
And when you factor in what Gregg is making compared to what DeRosa is making...I mean, there is just no way to defend the Ceda trade.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | June 16, 2009 at 12:58 PM
There's no way to justify much of anything Hendry did.
Posted by: www.homehalfway.net | June 16, 2009 at 01:10 PM
FYI - According to fangraphs, Derrek Lee has outplayed his contract in every year he has been a Cub minus the year he broke his wrist.

"There's no way to justify much of anything Hendry did."
Lets not forget the genious moves he made either, like the trade for Harden, the free agent signings of Lilly and DeRosa, which many ridiculed him for at the time. We all need to take the good with the bad here.

What's the word on Aramis? Timetable for a return?
Posted by: nrmax88 | June 16, 2009 at 03:14 PM
I think a lot of GM's would've thrown lots of money at Soriano after coming off of a 40/40 season. I would say that Soriano has underperformed to his contract moreso and Hendry may have overpayed, more in terms of length than in terms of dollars.

Around the All-Star Break.

As I recall, Cubs fans were excited about the Soriano deal when it took place... being critical of it now is merely hindsight.
Also, the Cubs signed Bradley for one reason ... to produce in the playoffs. Until that time comes, it won't be possible to evaluate that deal. That having been said, it was a mistake to let DeRosa go. Even with Bradley playing 120 games (big if), there would have been a lot of at bats available for him and his versatility is valuable. Trading D. Lee would have made more sense.
Hey Aduncaroo, check it out, I'm not bashing the Cubs.

"Actually, Fukudome has been the primary everyday center fielder for Chicago, and he's been a really pleasant surprise, although to be fair I kind of expected him to be better than he was last season.
I dont know. Yes, I have loved him being around and so hot to start the season. And I expected him to improve over last year. But on May 14 he was hitting .330/.456/.541. In the month since (23 games played) he has hit .155/.291/.239.
It just seems eerily familiar, you know. And he is once again showing his complete inability to hit when behind in the count, leaving me to question if he will ever produce that well on the whole.
P.S. Why are people questioning Lee? He started slow, but he is pretty close to what we have had and should have expected otherwise. I don’t love his contract, but it isnt Soriano or Zambrano horrible/hindering either. I am glad they didn’t dump just him this past offseason. And I would have much rather had Lee then Bradley if money issues created such a choice.
Posted by: SuzysMan | June 17, 2009 at 12:14 AM
Svengoolie, I see that! :-)
I think people just want to trade Lee because of the Hoff, or maybe even Jake Fox...but I have a feeling most would regret it if it actually happened.
Kosuke is starting to worry me too. This is about the same time it all started last year. He is going to adjust.
