Sherman On Phillies, Rockies, Marlins

Joel Sherman of the New York Post explains how Jason Marquis and Ryan Spilborghs almost became Phillies and names a dangerous NL East team:

  • A few weeks ago the Phillies and Rockies seriously discussed a deal that would have sent Marquis and Spilborghs to the Phillies for J.A. Happ and prospects.
  • The Phillies would have acquired an innings eater and a righty bat, while the Rockies would have shed payroll and acquired young talent.
  • The Rockies began an extended hot streak after the trade talks began, so they decided not to make the deal.
  • Colorado is now quietly in search of a veteran reliever.
  • Some believe the Marlins are a threat to win the NL East because of their talented young rotation.
  • Sherman reminds us that the Marlins have "one of the most aggressive, successful front offices in the majors."

Dealing for Marquis now would be dumb. He's a proven horrible second half pitcher.

Except for 1 season 5 years ago and 2 months this year, he has been horrible for his entire career. So much for untouchable top starters if they even THOUGHT about giving up Happ for this guy.

Compared to Marquis, Penny is Cy Young.

If I were the Rockies, I would have definitely been gung-ho with that deal, selling high on Marquis. I'd rather have Happ in my rotation come August than Marquis, who just doesn't seem to have the stamina for 30 starts. Either that or he does enough crack during the All-Star break that he forgets how to pitch afterwards every year.

You missed a good opportunity there, Colorado.

Imagine how much better the Marlins would be if they had another 10 million in payroll...

I have a strong, strong feeling Amaro is the one who hung up the phone on that deal. It doesn't improve the Phillies in any way, shape, or form.

It would've been a heist for O'Dowd if it had been pulled off.

Agreed, melonis. Any GM in their right mind would have given up a chump like Marquis riding high for a top prospect like Happ.

The procrastinator's national anthem:

"Yo", "I wooda, coulda, shoulda!
