Who Goes In A Pittsburgh Firesale?

With Nate McLouth now playing in Atlanta, a number of still-Pirates vented about the decision. Coincidentally, the two players quoted, Freddy Sanchez and Adam LaRoche, are likely to be prime targets for Pittsburgh to deal.

Sanchez is a middle infielder having a typical Freddy Sanchez season: .321/.359/.488, with below-average defense at second base. A number of teams should be interested in Sanchez, and in his age-31 season, Sanchez isn't likely to be part of the next great Pirates' team. He's scheduled to make $6.1MM in 2009, with an $8MM option for 2010 that vests if he reaches 635 plate appearances.

As for LaRoche, a 29-year-old who can hit pretty well and play first base, he's also likely to be shown the door. LaRoche is making $7.05MM in 2009, and teams that acquire him have the advantage of getting the second-half LaRoche. LaRoche is a career .776 OPS hitter in the first half, but .907 OPS in the second half.

While he didn't vent in the linked article, Jack Wilson could also be on the move. Not only does he make $7.25MM, he's also in his age-31 season. However, his .264/.291/.380 line -- even with solid defense at shortstop -- means the haul Pittsburgh gets for Wilson could be limited.

Maybe if Adam LaRoche didn't hit .220 the first half of every year then the Pirates wouldn't feel compelled to deal players for prospects.

I would guess Grabow and potentially Yates or Hinske if they get hot before the deadline.

Sox work something out to reacquire Sanchez to play ss?

Freddy at short? No way.

Teams should be trying to pick Gorzelany up for a song and rehabilitate him. If Pittsburgh would let him go for what his current market value is instead of what it could be then he'd be a worthwhile gamble. Obviously can't see the Pirates doing it but you never know. Too bad for everyone other than them that Dave Littlefield isn't still running the team.

Gotta say I like the McLouth trade for the Pirates. Three descent prospects for an overrated player. He hasn't hit particularly well in almost a year and his defense is vastly overrated by the gold glove he got but didn't deserve. He's a little like a left-handed version of Reed Johnson with more power and worse defense.

Rather Freddy than what Sox have currently active.....at least he hits well.

McLouth in 2008 hit .281 pre all star break, .270 afterwords. He's on pace for 30 Hr's and 114 Rbi's
This Braves fan sees nothing wrong with those numbers, especially after the complete lack of offensive from CF and RF.

Detroit needs some offensive help. I'd take Adam LaRoche, Miguel Cabrera could use some protection in that lineup. Even Freddy Sanchez because Polanco just isn't hitting.

LaRoche and Cabrera are both 1B, unless Cabrera moves back to 3rd, it wont work

Eddie Kunz, Jeffrey Marte, and Nick Evans for Adam Laroche? Met fans what do you think?

Actually Eddie Kunz, Nick Evans and Brant Rustich for laroche

In re to Wilson ...

"... means the haul Pittsburgh gets for Wilson could be limited."

Salary relief only

No way a team is shelling out a prorated $7m + giving Pittsburgh any prospects. Wilson is a liability - they should have moved him last year when teams were somewhat interested.

I sure wish the Pirates would have traded Jack Wilson to the Tigers for Jair Jurrjens when they had the chance.

how good of a prospect would Pitt want for LaRoche. Obviously the Giants should have some interest.

Waits for deluded idiot to chime in with how Jack Wilson should net top prospects despite being an offensive black hole and more expensive than Jose Reyes...

@ johan. I think that is a little too much. Maybe Kunz or Rustich and the add a lower level prospect, maybe a guy like Duda or Lutz. With the way Thole is hitting, I wouldn't be surprised of the Mets would trade Pena away. I think three prospects or two plus Evan is a little too much for a .220 hitter when if I think the Mets call up Evans he could put up the same numbers dispite his poor production this year.

Zach Duke to the Phillies, please.

As much as I think Pittsburgh should go ahead and trade them all. I don't think they will right now. If they are smart they will wait till closer to the deadline for LaRoche. He'll be a free agent and his return is going to be minimal and he hasn't heated up and done his annual hot streak in the second half. He'd net a decent prospect or two, but I don't think he'll break the bank.

If there is a need for a second baseman, Freddy could be the next one to be traded. He could net something pretty good. In spite of the author's assertion that he's below average defensively, he's actually a pretty good defender. He doesn't have Brandon Phillips range, but he turns the double play pretty well. He doesn't have much speed though.

I don't think they'll make any trades immediately, but before the deadline, I think they'll try and move the pending free agents.

the thing about jack is that SS is SOOOO valuable a defensive position, and getting someone with the ability to field the position is REALLY hard. The Pirates currently don't have another warm body that can actually play SS and hit above the Mendoza line. If you think their pitchers ERAs are bad now. Trade Jack and put Freddy at SS.

The Pirates should have a fire sale and they should do it asap.

I had thought Wilson could go to the Mets and he still probably could but will the Mets pull the trigger or not? Sure Wilson isnt much with the bat but defensively he is unreal and he still hits better than John MacDonald. Itll depend what the Pirates want for him.

Adam LaRoche said before that he wants to stay in Pittsburgh with his brother but I get the feeling that even the family ties arent strong enough to make him happy in steel town now. The question is, who wants LaRoche? I would have also said the Mets before but at this point I dont think the Mets have enough in the farm system to get it done unless they want to trade Murphy but they wont and even then I dont think thatd get it done for Pittsburgh since LaRoche is a pretty great offensive/defensive/leadership addition. Apart from the Mets, what other teams could be interested?

Sanchez in my opinion will fetch the biggest return because he has all the tools. He is great defensively, he can play multiple positions, he can hit for contact and can still crush mistakes, he can run well and he is a good clubhouse guy. In my opinion, he will bring in the biggest haul for the Pirates. I would have to assume the Giants are interested, but aside from that, the options are pretty wide open because of Sanchez' ability to play a number of positions effectively.

Maybe the Bucs should trade Huntington for a GM to be named later? One that can get equal value for players?

"the thing about jack is that SS is SOOOO valuable a defensive position, and getting someone with the ability to field the position is REALLY hard."

While that is all true, what really hurts Wilson's trade value is that Clint Barmes is also probably available to free up the Colorado logjam. Barmes is very close to Wilson defensively, probably a little better offensively, and does not have the multimillion dollar salary.

And because he largely flies under the radar, the asking price might actually be lower for Barmes, though it really shouldn't be...

"Maybe the Bucs should trade Huntington for a GM to be named later? One that can get equal value for players?"

There does seem to be some benefit to making deals with the incompetent front office in Pittsburgh. To deal away Jason Bay, Xavier Nady, and Damaso Marte and only come back with one blue chip prospect (Tabata) one borderline prospect/suspect (LaRoche) and a bunch of fringe players and washouts was just complete highway robbery by the other three teams. Did Pittsburgh learn their lesson? Or will SF acquire LaRoche for a package built around Kevin Frandsen and Eugenio Velez?

I like your style but what about a bigger deal like LaRoche and Sanchez over to SF in exchange for Velez, Frandsen, Ishikawa and a pitching prospect like Matos perhaps?

Man...you are really overvaluing LaRoche and Sanchez...

The Giants would want to deal away Ishikawa, Velez and a prospect for them why?

No, it won't be, because GM's aren't idiots, they value skill over the name. Still, Barmes isn't going to get that much when he can only walk 20-30 times a year and play an average SS and an above average second, and is around 30, even if he's a good pure hitter with speed....
