Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that the D'Backs released Tony Clark. The 37-year-old first baseman was hitting .182 with four homers in 66 at bats. Piecoro suggests the D'Backs wanted to create room for Josh Whitesell and give him the chance to play regularly.

Finally. This needed to happen.
I want to see more noncontenders releasing their dead weight vets.

melonis rex... who cares?

Melonis, he was just doing what he needed to do as a reporter. He's supposed to cover every team, contention notwithstanding.

You totally took what he said the wrong way.

rereading that.. yeah, I did. I'm stupid. Just disregard everything I say from now on.
Then again, I just had the longest work day of my life, so I sort of have a reason.

Finally. I never thought Byrnes would actually do it though.
I don't see Clark being too sour to accept a coaching job sometime soon. I think he'll see it was necessary, he's a mature guy.

I think Clark finds a temporary home on a contender as sort of a stopgap bench player until someone returns from injury. Not saying they will even have any interest at all but as an example: The Mets pick him up as a bench player/pinch hitter until Delgado returns then DFA or release him.

mets are better off with using murphy at 1st. clark hasn't been decent since 2007.

Danny Murphy needs to head back to AAA for more seasoning IMO.
I think acquiring Tony Clark to platoon with Tatis at 1B wouldn't be the worse thing in the world.
Then they could play a steadier OF of Pagan and Francoeur everyday with Sheffield getting spelled occasionally by Reed.

THANK YOU! There is a God! Now pay the damn Eric Byrnes tax and cut him to! Buy out Tracy While your at it.
We need veteran every day position players and a solid 8th inning reliever. Probably a LHP starter to.
Take chances. 1B, 2B, 8th inning reliever next season.
The team is going to produce offensively next season with a health Co-Jack and Drew. Upton and Reynolds seem to have things figured out now and are producing. Parra did from day one.
The team will be too much of a contender to not take a chance and pick up Webb's option. Webb typically only needs two starts to get right anyway.

It would be smart to cut Eric Byrnes, once Jackson gets back, because we'll have Upton, Young, and Parra in the outfield, with Jackson playing LF against righties and 1B against lefties (where Parra would move over to LF and Young would play center).
It's awful that the Dbacks will have a "glorified 4th outfielder" even when Byrnes leaves: Chris Young. They're even similar players, many strikeouts and many, many popups.

If he doesn't get picked up (and I hope he does, Tony Clark would be a great bench bat for a contender - a return to the Tigers would be neat), then I think it's fair to say Tony was a great guy who's had a good career. If only he'd had a better supporting cast in Detroit way back when, he'd be remembered with a lot more fanfare.
