Ownership invested $50MM in the D'Backs, so they'll have enough money to maintain their current payroll according to MLB.com's Barry Bloom. The team plans to spread the investment over the next five years to make up for expected drops in revenue.

"The D'Backs, who have a payroll of $76MM, used to owe former players hundreds of millions in deferred payments, but the current ownership group is now paying off that debt. Once the D'Backs pay off the remaining $40MM they'll have more to spend on players."
The sentence was not completed. Once the D'Backs pay off the remaining $40MM, they'll have more to spend on players and get themselves in a financial bind again.
It's not just the D'Backs. *Sigh*

Anyone know if there is a list floating around the internet of ex-mlb players still receiving deferred payments?
I figure that would be a pretty entertaining read. I think the Mets are still paying Bobby Bonilla and Mo Vaughn. I'm sure there are a bunch of other crazy ones I don't know about.

spieldogg,
I agree, that would be an interesting list to see. Ben, you have your assignment!

In the D-Backs case. I think like 75% of that money is going to Randy Johnson.

about the delayed money---
"They still owe outfielder Bernard Gilkey — who drove in 50 runs in three seasons — $500,000 a year for the next 25 years."

That's insane. I barely even remember Gilkey playing with the D-Backs.

If I remember right, Jay Bell is still getting paid huge bucks. Talk about a bad contract.
