The Indians acquired Winston Abreu from the Rays for minor league righty John Meloan and cash, according to an Indians press release. Abreu will be added to the Indians' major league roster.
Abreu, 32, pitched in just two games for the Rays this year, but he excelled in Triple A, striking out 49 and allowing just 24 baserunners in 32 innings for an ERA of 1.41. Meloan, who turns 25 next weekend, pitched briefly in two seasons for the Indians. His Triple A numbers are less impressive than Abreu's this year, as he's struck out 37 and allowed 69 baserunners in 44 innings for a 5.52 ERA.

Meloan :( I miss him on the Dodgers, even if he wasn't very good, lol. I hope he gets some playing time in the majors on the Rays.

Meloan? Seriously?
Bad Shapiro, bad.

i remember a short period where Meloan was considered the Dodgers' closer of the future; before Broxton showed what he could be at the major league level

Why would Cleveland trade a potentially good 25-year-old reliever for a potentially good 32-year-old reliever?
Meloan was dominant in the minors in 2006 and 2007. His development seemed to be slowed by a move to the rotation, but he's got some potential and I like the move for Tampa.

"Meloan? Seriously?

This does seem a strange move. They cant be that desperate for a bullpen arm right now, they arent in the race anyway.
I dont get it.

Since when did Meloan become the second coming of Dennis Eckersley over here? Oh yea, must be Dodgers fans.
Seriously, have you people seen what this stiff has been doing in AAA Columbus? The guy is getting lit up and all of his #'s are down across the board from last year for the nearly 25-year-old soon to be non-prospect.

No one is saying Meloan was a future star, but for Winston Abreu? Really?
Posted by: Ivdown | July 02, 2009 at 02:34 PM
Mike B,
It isnt that Melaon is that special. But he is good, and he does have some impressive lines. Even this year in AAA, his stats are better then his results. (it is the .346 BAbip that is killing him in AAA this season) And to trade him for a 32 YO AAA reliever with a .240 BAbip and 84% strand rate just doesn’t seem like a logical move from a GM that is usually rather shrewd in trades. Melaon seems just as likely to come up and provide results as Abreu right now, and has more potential for the future. And since the team isnt competing, what is the point in trading future for possible (but not necessarily) better results right now? It is just odd

The difference is age, Mike. I'd rather have a 25-year guy with potential upside, than a 31-year-old. Meloan has more prime years left, albeit not many. Abreu, at this age, most likely, does not.
And, just when I thought Mark was putting a good year of signings/trades (the standings, disagree, but...) Of course, you could make the case for F-Gut in Seattle this year. An unsung hero if there was one this year.
Of the people posted in this article, only Ivdown is a Dodger fan, for the record.
Let's compare, shall we (using 09 minor league stats- I know the large difference between majors and minors, so don't get on my horse on that)?
Meloan: .346 BABIP against. That's going to go down, without a question. 69.8% of LOB. His FIP is exactly one run lower than his ERA. (4.52 vs. 5.52, in case you were wondering.) Given that, he sounds kind of decent. Not to mention. the age advantage, once again.
This, versus 31 year old Winston [a great name for a pitcher, Wins+ton) Abreu's:
I'll give LOB for Abreu, his is 84.1. His FIP is basically not relevant- it's only .07 runs difference, ERA favored (1.41 to 1.48). I'm guessing, given SIX years, Meloan could match that. However, the great stat, BABIP heavily favors Meloan. His [Abreu's BABIP] is only .240, sure to go up, as his career minro league BABIP (from 2006) is .286. He's sure to get hit harder.
I rest my case. Easy win for Friedman.

Meloan should of been in the Indians pen right now.

"Meloan should of been in the Indians pen right now. "
Was thinking the same thing. More clever moves out of Freidman and co.

There must be more here than meets the eye. The Indians bullpen has been an absolute disaster from Greg Aquino to Luis Vizcaino to Kerry Wood and I can't imagine why a young AAA power arm like Meloan wouldn't be in the mix in this bullpen (it's not like he could be any worse than the other arms). Time will tell why Shapiro would make such a move.

Rays win long-term, and probably short term as well. Did Shapiro even look at Abreu's career MLB stats?

Mike B.
No one thinks he is the next Ecks. Everyone is just saying that he is worth more in upside, low contract and length of said contract, than Winston Abreau.

"The Indians acquired Winston Abreu from the Rays for minor league righty John Meloan and *CASH*."
I think CASH is what Shapiro wants. We tend forget the times we are living in.

Way to much analysis here! Cleveland is desperate for bullpen help right now and Abreau has pitched very well in Triple A. Meloan, on the other hand, has been awful and Cleveland doesn't think he can help them! That's the bottom line. Neither team gave up much and neither team is getting a lot.
Both of these guys are just borderline big league pitchers; we're not talking about top talent here.
The only two numbers that matter at all are Abreu's 1.41. era vs. Meloan's 5.52 and, Abreau's 24 baserunners in 32 innings vs. Meloan's 69 baserunners in 44 innings. Right now, Cleveland believes that Abreau might be more able to help out than Meloan.
Yes, Abreau is older but this is a minor deal with one (Cleveland) hoping to get some bullpen help now and the other (Tampa Bay) taking a flyer on a guy who might get better some time in the future. Unless lightening strikes, neither Abreau or Meloan is likely to have much of a big league career.

I think all of you are forgetting the true Mark Shapiro bullpen mentality since openining day 2009:
"Throw a bunch of crap against the wall and see what sticks."
Really, I don't like, nor dislike, Meloan. I just don't think he's a plus reliever in the Indians long term plans. The trade is what it is. Other than that, I doubt the loss of Meloan is worth getting upset over.
Posted by: Mike B. | July 02, 2009 at 05:20 PM
Mike, dont think anyone here is upset either. It is just plain ol simple surprise that a great trading GM would make a move that flat out doesnt make sense.
Abreu has been good, but extremely lucky. Meloan has been good, just horribly unlucky. There really isnt much pointing to which will be better in the majors right now. And the Indians are not even in contention anyway, what difference does it make if they play a kid? Just doesnt make sense, so people are stating as much.

For the record, John Meloan is a cool dude. I went fishing with him last year when he was in Buffalo. He bought me lunch. Hope he does well in the Rays system.
