Marlins Considering Bullpen Options

The Miami Herald reports that the Marlins are considering George Sherrill and Luis Ayala as they look to improve an injury-depleted bullpen. There's also confirmation of Jon Heyman's weekend report that the Marlins discussed Joakim Soria and Heath Bell.

However, they don't want to add payroll without subtracting some. None of the relievers named make over $3MM, but the Marlins may not have the flexibility to add any of them without sending a similarly priced player away. Cameron Maybin has hit well in the minors this year, so the Marlins could promote him if they trade an outfielder away.

I don't know if the O's are a good fit if the Marlins are looking to move Ross or Hermida in a deal. Baltimore doesn't need outfielders, so maybe a three team trade would work.

Nick Massett for Cody Ross?

I'm hoping Raffy Betancourt comes off the D.L. soon, has a few strong outings and then gets dealt to the Marlins.

O's better open the good old pockets up for Cody Ross. Mr. 3Grand slams already this yr.

I would see it costing Sherril +

If the Marlins can acquire an arm such as a Heath Bell, George Sherrill, Danyz Baez, or Rafael Bentancourt via trade ... plus maybe a middle of the order bat who could take over at third base (Garret Atkins ... Mark Teahan) Then in my opinion they have to be the favorites for the NL East. They have a young rotation headlined by a solid front 3 in Nolasco, Johnson, Miller ... plus a young linuep full of speed and power that could help propel them to first place in the weak NL East.

Why would the O's even want Ross...he's not on the same level as Jones or Markakis and Riemold has a ton of potential. I think the O's will want infielders and prospects in any deal.

@FreeSide: I could see Baez as a better option. He'll be a FA after the year and I would bet the O's would pay for his deal this year to get better prospects.

Fish are looking for BP help, they have tons of ML pitching, but it is at the lower levels and at lest 1+ years away.

They do have a good starter in VandenHurk that could be of interest to the Fish, he got hurt in the WBC, but is fine now and has done well at the AAA level and for the fish last year.

@Johns: what are you saying VandenHurk could be an interest to who?

My mistake Steveo26 in the post.

Was thinking that maybe the O's could use Vandenhurk as a starter. He's a big, tall(6'5) K pitcher that pitched for the Netherlands in the WBC and came back with arm trouble, but is fine now and doing well at AAA.

The Fish rotation is good, but the desperately need BP help and I know the O's need starters and was just wondering.

No worries Johns:

I agree I think the Fish and O's can match up on a prospect trade, just not one with Arb. guys. The post alluded to the Fish not wanting to take on money. Now while I think the O's will kick in some value in say a Baez deal, they can't pay for the next couple years of Sherrill. From a fan's perspective I hope the O's can make a deal, I like the Fish's system.

Yeah, my gripe with the Fish also is that they cut salary regardless of whether they win or not.

They cut ties with Joe Nelson this past off season over a couple million dollars and he would have been a life saver about now.

Agree with you completely Johns: think of what the Marlins could do with money...

its a catch 22, if they had money, they wouldnt be a bad team to get the awesome prospects they get for finishing close to last

I think Francisco Cordero would be perfect for the Marlins. Maybe they could get him for Hermida/Ross and a minor league player like Rick VandeHurk or Jai Miller

04Forever: I'm not sure if thats true. Most of the Marlins talented young players have been acquired via trade not top-5 draft picks. Also they are having a lot of post first round players becoming successful. It really boils down to money for the Marlins. Despite having record low payrolls these last few years they have still been fairly competative. Correct me if I'm wrong but Skipworth is their only top-10 pick in the last 5+ years.

i agree steveo26 couldn't have said it better myself.

Yeah, while it's true that most of the Marlins talent comes from trades, its because they have to shed payroll so often/can't afford to pay very many guys that perform really well top dollar and have the fire sales. So while I agree they are a well ran organization, I don't neccessarily think they would be continual winners with a bigger payroll.

But what do I know? The O's have beaten the Sox more times this season than my team so...yeah
