« Orlando Hernandez Expected To Become A Free Agent | Main | Odds & Ends: Escobar, Peavy, Mets, Cardinals »
MLB.com's Bill Ladson reports that while he's readily available, the Nationals are asking for too much in return for first baseman Nick Johnson.Teams are just not willing to give up their top young players for the injury prone Johnson, even though he's hitting .305-.413-.425 on the season. He'll also be a free agent at the end of the year, another reason teams are reluctant to meet the Nats demands.
Ladson also mentions that "contending teams" have expressed interest in utility man Willie Harris. Capable of playing just about everywhere except pitcher and catcher, Harris is hitting .253-.370-..430 in 190 plate appearances this season.

Drop their prices reasonable and trade them, Rizzo. Get what you can for the guys.

I understand the Nats trying to hold out to get the best possible deal but they should try and unload this guy as soon as possible seeing that he is an awkward head scratch away from a season ending injury.

Drop the asking price for Johnson. DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT trade Willi Harris or hundreds of fans will jump ship on the franchise.
Frankly, I'm nto comfrotable wiht Dunnn playing 1B if Johnson is traded, so the Nats should re-sign Johnson to a 2 year incentive laden deal

I guess Rizzo learned this trick from Bowden. Ask for too much in a trade, hold on to aging players or pending free agents, and watch team go up in flames. I hope he drops his asking price, not only so my team can maybe pick up some of the players on the Nationals with some talent, but so that the Nationals can move forward and become competitive. It can only help baseball as a whole to have the Nationals become successful.

They could always call up Casto, he's having a decent year in AAA even though his big league stats suck. If they can get anything back for these two, namely prospects, it would be good. Johnson's value is high right now, and who knows if he'll be injured tomorrow or a few months down the road. If you can get solid prospects for both these guys, pull the trigger, because it seems that this season is already down the drain for the Natinals, and its time to focus on the future.

Who is comfortable with Dunn playing anywhere in the field?

JARE, I think Rizzo will be fine. He'll deal the players when the time and return are right...If they're only being offered a C or C+ prospect for Johnson, I wouldn't deal him either.

I remember when Johnson was actually a fairly slick 1B. The games have seen him in this year however, he looks like a walking stiff, with little range and lousy hands. Hard to imagine Dunn being much worse even if they could convince him to play 1B, remember that one of the things he had the Nats FO agree to was that he was not going to be "stuck" playing 1B, but the OF instead?
How the Nats expect to get much for Johnson with the way he looks on "D" and his lousy health record, plus impending FA is really strange, not to mention they are not going to get any compensation when he walks anyway. Aubrey Huff is worth at least as much as a bat and not quite the health risk if the O's will take less.

WHY? Are fans really going to stop following the Nationals if they trade a 31 yearold 4th OFer/IFer.

I think that Indians' Ryan Garko could be an interesting name at the deadline. He's a solid hitter with a .274/.354/.442 line who could be had cheaply since he's blocking LaPorta at 1B. He's also under team control through 2012.

These are my thoughts as well. With how he is hitting so far this year, there's a chance he could be a B free agent and the Nats could get a compensatory pick in the draft, and that would be a whole lot better than getting some schmoe prospect in a worthless trade.
