« Brewers DFA R.J. Swindle; Rays Claim Him | Main | Odds And Ends: Prospects, Giambi, Angels »
The Rays acquired catcher Gregg Zaun from the Orioles for a player to be named later or cash considerations, according to an Orioles press release. Just last week the Rays were in on Victor Martinez as they looked for depth behind the plate. Like Martinez, Zaun is a switch hitter under contract for this year with a club option for 2010. Zaun makes $1.5MM this year and the Rays will choose between a $500k buyout and a $2MM option for next season.
So far in 2009, the 38-year-old is hitting .244/.355/.375 with four homers.

Thank god, any one know about his D?? Regardless even if he's just somewhat below average his projected 321woba for the rest of the season is about 30-40 points higher than the two rays catchers(short and fat and AAAA michel) are projected for.

Not a very good defender, but calls a pretty good game and yea, the Rays needed some hitting out of the catcher position. He won't rock the ball but is better than Navarro or Hernandez.

You bite your tongue Bengal, as an O's fan I've been watching Zaun all year. He is a very good defender. In fact, his defense is what he's known for.

Zaun blocks balls well, but had a lot of trouble throwing out runners here in Toronto-- though he was getting no help whatsoever from his pitchers. So, I guess it depends on what you mean by defence. I always thought he was a lot better than the fans here who only seemed to see all the stolen bases ever gave him credit for. Pretty average catcher, which I guess sounds like an upgrade. Didn't realize just how badly Navarro has fallen.

As a Jays fan who watched him for years, I can say that his defense is quite good. HOWEVER, his limp noodle of an arm means that pretty well anyone can swipe a base off of him.

"Like Martinez, Zaun is a switch hitter under contract for this year with a club option for 2010"
I'd say that's where the similarities end.

Bonus: Zaun knows the AL East. I'll miss him in Bmore, but it was a good move for both teams.

Best of Luck Zaun, you will be missed.

Smart move by the Rays.

Baltimore and Tampa hooking up with another mysterious PTBNL.. what was the last one? A bucket of balls?
Good move for Tampa... Orioles lose a very above average backup. Wieters set to play more?

Zaun is a timely hitting solid bat with above-average defense. You don't hang around baseball as long as he has by dumb luck. He is a great game-caller and is known for his glove. His arm has regressed this season some, but he hasn't had that many chances this season with Wieters as the #1.
