« Astros Re-Sign Geoff Blum | Main | Noah Lowry To Become A Free Agent »
5:31pm: Henry Schulman of The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the contract is worth $6MM a year, so $12MM total. Sanchez takes a $2.1MM pay cut in 2010, but ends up with more guaranteed money in the long run.
5:17pm: The Giants have re-signed second baseman Freddy Sanchez to a two-year deal, according to CSNBayArea.com. The terms of the contract have not been released.
The 31-year-old Sanchez hit .284/.295/.324 in just 107 plate appearances for the Giants after coming over from the Pirates at the trade deadline, missing time with a strained shoulder and a torn meniscus in his left knee. His $8.1MM option for 2010 did not vest, and the team decided that instead of picking it up or buying Sanchez out for $600K, they're better off renegotiating a new deal.

Over Orlando Hudson?
SABEAN'S STILL GOT IT!
Posted by: PL | October 30, 2009 at 05:19 PM
Well that kills my Uggla to the Giants idea.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | October 30, 2009 at 05:20 PM
I expected this to happen, I'm just happy we restructured the deal as opposed to picking up his option.
I think if healthy, F.Sanchez can be an integral part of our team the next two years and validate the trading of alderson.
Posted by: Leland11 | October 30, 2009 at 05:24 PM
After giving up Alderson, this had to happen.
Posted by: Tomahawk368 | October 30, 2009 at 05:27 PM
Oh yeah, Alderson, thats the only reason why Freddy was resigned.
In Freddy Sanchez, the Giants have found a version of Randy Winn who can play 2B. Thats....not good.
Posted by: PL | October 30, 2009 at 05:31 PM
I would rather have Sanchez over Hudson. Hudson's best asset has been his defense, which has slipped dramatically over the last year or so.
I mean if the Bums are going to play Belliard over Hudson even after he recovered from his yearly injury, what's that say for Hudson.
I think Giants fans have been too quick to call Sanchez a bust. Can we say sample size? When healthy he hits over .300 and if anything AT&T will help his numbers since what it takes away from in power, it makes up for in average.

Could you imagine if the

Giant's had let him go? The trade wasn't great as it was, but to let Freddy go would be insane.

"The trade wasn't great as it was, but to let Freddy go would be insane."
Eh, sometimes a team really needs to bite the bullet and move on. Sanchez is ok and $6M a year isn't go awful, but I don't think he's going to be the power source the Giants wanted.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | October 30, 2009 at 05:44 PM
Well, at least they shaved off 2mil rather than picking up the option. Still not happy with the original trade.
Maybe he'll have a bounce back year. At least one can hope...
@start wearing purple
Freddy isn't the power source they're looking for obviously. He is the "on base" guy. Or at least used to be capable of it.
Gotta move runners over and create RBI situations, that's what Freddy Sanchez can (or used to) do.
Posted by: Giantsguy1987 | October 30, 2009 at 05:48 PM
But getting a power source out of second would mean living with Uggla's low BA and giving up more prospects.
We are not one player away anyway. Signing Sanchez is a start, now to add some power without sacrificing a great deal. Just say no to Bay and Holliday. Try for Nick Johnson, and perhaps Nady, though I'm iffy on him. A 2,3,4 of Sanchez, Johnson and Panda would generate some runs at least.
Posted by: GiantsRuleDodgersDrool | October 30, 2009 at 05:49 PM
That .295 OBP is exactly what the Giants need.
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | October 30, 2009 at 05:53 PM
I would approve of a Nick Johnson gamble if it was low priced. That injury stuff bugs the heck out of me, though.
Nady would be a similar pickup to Johnson in my eyes. Only way it's worth anything is if he's cheap. I think he could be a decent five or six spot hitter on the Giants.
Posted by: Giantsguy1987 | October 30, 2009 at 05:53 PM
@661dodgerblue
hahahahahaha, he fits right in with the ridiculous amount of hackers in this ballclub.

Actually I think they should make a run at Beltre and move Sandoval to first permanently. Beltre would drastically improve defense and would be another decent power source. You don't need a 50 hr guy, just some good hitters.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | October 30, 2009 at 05:57 PM
Classic Sabean: Take a bad bet and double down on it. Fred Sanchez is not real likely to provide power or OBP this team needs if he can even stay healthy. For those that think I am being too harsh his last full season produced .292 wOBA so now we are stuck hoping the 2007 Sanchez shows up for both 2010 & 2011. Well at least the contract is under 3 years and under $20MM but it is still a bad, bad bet to improve things.
Posted by: daveinexile | October 30, 2009 at 05:58 PM
I don't know why so many people hate on Freddy Sanchez he was on the DL for the first time in his career this year and people act like he's always getting hurt
hes a pretty good hitter and always is a near .300 hitter
PL he is a way better hitter than Randy Winn
Posted by: Bleacher_bum_SF | October 30, 2009 at 05:59 PM
Beltre seems perfect for them. Thing is, they need another big bat somewhere. If you move Sandoval over to 1st, that severely limits your options in terms of acquiring a new bat. You'd either have to take a huge gamble (like, say, trading for J.J. Hardy and benching Renteria), or do something silly like bench Fred Lewis and sign Jason Bay.
I think the more likely scenarios are these: 1) they acquire a 1B bat and keep Sandoval at 3B, or 2) they trade for a 3B like Mike Lowell and make a sacrifice on defense.
Posted by: ugen64 | October 30, 2009 at 06:00 PM
I think people are down on freddy's injury because well, it's the kind of injury that can nag for a LONG time.
I would love for the guy to bounce back. After all those years of being on the Pirates he's in a place that actually has a shot (not a GREAT shot or anything) at the postseason.
Posted by: Giantsguy1987 | October 30, 2009 at 06:03 PM
This is a decent move...they got him cheaper than his option yr.
They could still go for Uggla and put him at 3B or 1B or maybe even LF
Posted by: 55saveslives | October 30, 2009 at 06:20 PM
That is quite a spread between his BA and OBP. What is that - like 1 BB in 100 AB's?
Posted by: bjsguess | October 30, 2009 at 07:54 PM
Anyone think the Giants would go for a Thames for rp swap?
Posted by: Calriver | October 30, 2009 at 08:22 PM
Seems like a descent, though not great move by the Giants. Sanchez isn't awesome but he's better than what they had, it does seem that they could have gotten someone else similar for less though. It's not going to kill them but it's not going to make them contenders either. If nothing else this contract kind of highlights the absurdity of the Luis Castillo contract. Sanchez for 2/12 is much better than Castillo at 4/24.
Posted by: pageian | October 30, 2009 at 08:22 PM
Surprised to hear Giant's fans so down on Freddie. 100AB's is too small to trash a player who has Always been solid, and Always been healthy; and now he has something to prove. The Giants, IMO, will be glad they got him.
The Only way Mike Lowell goes anywhere is if the Red Sox by some fluke land Adrian Gonzales. With a hip that is finally healthy, his fine offensive #'s will improve, his defense could approach his GG standard, and he will have a terrific contract year in Boston.
Posted by: gerald troy | October 30, 2009 at 08:53 PM
Now add Nick Johnson 2 years 14M, Uribe 2 yrs 8M, and Nady for LF @ 2 yrs 12M plus option. these move I think would give the team the half run a game they need.
Posted by: WillieMaysField | October 30, 2009 at 09:18 PM
The thing that concerns me most about Sanchez is that his season line looks like he bounced back from a down 2008, but really he had a good April, then one ridiculous week to end May. The rest of the season his OBP was below .300 and his OPS was around .625.
Posted by: Gnarburger | October 30, 2009 at 10:53 PM
I like this signing. A former batting champ. It's only two years. Gives us time to see what we have in the minors to eventually take over 2nd. Win/win situation. Not a bad price either.
Posted by: Humm Baby | October 31, 2009 at 12:40 AM
"I like this signing. A former batting champ."
That's a pretty awful argument. Billy Mueller, Nomar Garciaparra, Bernie, Williams, Frank Thomas, and many others are former batting champs I wouldn't want on my team. Barry Zito and Bartolo Colon are former Cy Young award winner, again, wouldn't want them on my team. Awards won should be viewed as completely meaningless.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | October 31, 2009 at 02:22 AM
yea of course you wouldnt want bill mueller or nomar or any of those guys right now. they are a lot older, freddy sanchez is only 31. and signing beltre isn't a bad idea but we definately need to sign holliday or bay and then we will steal the division.
Posted by: giantsno1 | October 31, 2009 at 03:05 AM
"yea of course you wouldnt want bill mueller or nomar or any of those guys right now. they are a lot older, freddy sanchez is only 31."
You quite neatly evaded my point, which is why I added in Barry Zito's Cy Young award (surely Giants fans would understand that). Sanchez won the title in 2006. The next year his OPS dropped 70 points and his AVG dropped 40 points, the year after that he managed a .669 OPS which included a .298 OBP, a full 27 points higher than his AVG. Then last year, well he may have had only 102 ABs with the Giants but anyone who studies stats will tell you over 50 data points is significant. So really what does a "former" batting champ have to do with an argument of Sanchez being a good signing?
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | October 31, 2009 at 03:22 AM
Wow, we don't even have to wait until after the WS for Sabean to make a stupid move.
Posted by: melonis rex | October 31, 2009 at 10:02 AM
Wow overpaid. This deal makes castillos seem not as bad. At least castillo switch hits and has a much better obp than sanchez.
Posted by: jaydh2 | October 31, 2009 at 11:48 AM
everybody looks way too much at statistics. first you act like the reasons we signed him is because he was a batting champ. if you believe that then you are completely wrong. freddie sanchez is a consistent hitter. he always get hits, which is what the giants need. but they also need a guy who can drive in the hits. we dont need to waste our money trying to bid on a 2nd baseman and get into a bidding war and then lose or spend too much. we need to focusing on signing jason bay.

Ah, Sabeanmetrics, the brilliant system that will result in the team paying Barry Zito, Aaron Rowand, and Edgar Renteria a combined $39.5 million in 2010, or approximately half of the likely total payroll!
Here is a checklist of the crucial points used in Sabeanmetrics for free agent signings as they relate to Freddy Sanchez...
1) Over 30? Check.
2) Known as a "professional hitter"? Check.
3) Known to have "veteran savvy"? Check.
4) Hardly ever walks? Check.
5) Lack of power? Check.
6) Lack of speed? Check
7) Paid based as if he will replicate one good season from the past? Check.
8) Was the one good season 3-5 years ago? Check.
9) Did player earn some near-meaningless award such as all-star or gold glove? Check.
10) Was player signed for twice as much as anyone else would have offered before the market even developed? Check.
This one has them all! And now we get two more years of Sabean. If this team doesn't make the playoffs in either of the next two years with the pitching we have, will *that* finally be enough to get rid of him?
Posted by: jaywest05 | October 31, 2009 at 07:03 PM
yeah we signed freddy!!! let's be serious do you guys really think they will sign uggla? no way. this year giants(for some odd reason)are playing it safe. we were trying to realistically get prince and that didn't work so why would they get uggla
Posted by: giantspandaman24 | November 02, 2009 at 12:31 AM
I like Sanchez but he just got off the DL. I'd give him 6mill and if he doesn't take it you can slowly raise it.
