Odds & Ends: Bucs, Duchscherer, Astros

A fresh batch of links for Saturday afternoon...

  • Perry Hill left his post as Pirates first base coach Saturday and, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, expressed unhappiness with the team's aggressive trading on his way out.  The Pirates got rid of three-fourths of their infield (Jack Wilson, Freddy Sanchez and Adam LaRoche) during the year.
  • According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the A's have not touched base with soon-to-be free agent Justin Duchscherer since the end of the season.  GM Billy Beane plans to engage in some kind of discussions with the right-hander and his agent "soon."  We profiled "The Duke of Hurl" about a month ago.
  • Former Astros manager Phil Garner interviewed for the club's managing vacancy on Saturday afternoon, according to the Associated Press (via ESPN.com).  He was the seventh of 10 candidates to interview for the gig.
  • Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports that the Royals have retained minor league right-hander Jairo Cuevas.  The 25-year-old was eligible for free agency.

Who else think there's a pretty good chance Justin Duchscherer is a RED SOX next season? He's a classic buy low guy that the RED SOX like to deepen that rotation and he was originally drafted by the RED SOX.

Another off season, another Jairo Cuevas battle.

Last year the Braves claimed him off waivers from the Royals, but left him off the the 40 man roster, so the Royals claimed him back, but did the same the Braves claimed back, and somehow the Royals finally claimed him back and that was it (I can't remember how he was claimed each time)

I guess Perry Hill was alright with the Pirates standing pat and being a doormat for the rest of eternity, then? Good riddance.

I think the Astros are, surprisingly, interviewing all the right candidates for their open managerial position. However, I don't think Phil Garner should get the job. I believe that either Bob Melvin or Ned Yost is the right man for the job. Melvin because he has experience with winning with both young and old teams. Yost because he is experienced in the division and can bring a fiery attitude to the clubhouse, but also a winning attitude.

As a Brewers fan, though, I'm hoping Melvin gets the job. :P But, as a Brewers fan, I still think that we didn't need to fire Ned Yost simply to get a spark out of the team. They didn't do much better under Sveum or Macha.

Justin is called "the Duke of Hurl" because every five days he gives me the urge to hurl

@andre:
huh?
