Odds & Ends: Lackey, Rangers, Mets

With about an hour to go before the start of Game Two, here are some items from around the majors....

  • During an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show today, Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said his club will be focused on finding second base help and starting pitching in the offseason, though Colletti played dumb when asked about the possibility of the Dodgers making a play for free agent starter John Lackey.
  • With the number of open managerial jobs quickly dwindling, some of the rumored candidates for the filled positions are looking at other options.  Former Rockies manager Clint Hurdle (who was up for the Cleveland manager's job that went to Manny Acta) is one of four finalists to be the Rangers' next hitting coach, reports Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News.
  • Along those same lines, Bob Melvin may go from being a candidate to be the next Astros manager to being considered for the Mets bench coaching job, says Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News.  Rubin also reports that the Mets will name Chip Hale as their new third base coach after the World Series is over.
  • According to a team press release, the Pirates have claimed pitcher Justin Thomas off waivers from Seattle.
  • In a chat with MASN's Byron Kerr, Adam Dunn said he feels Washington is an attractive destination for free agents in part because Nationals Park is "a really fair ballpark."

Sounds like the Dodgers are interested in Lackey....

It's inescapable. Whenever I see Evan Grant's name, I'll always think of the guy who left Pedroia off his MVP ballot, then tried to skirt around the fact that he just plain didn't go his homework.

I think I need therapy.

Check it out. Post's are finally working. What happened?

so it wasnt just me? I actually emailed MLBTR trying to see if it was just me or a website thing...

Same here and considering my comp has been acting up I figured it was going to hell. The way it looks is they upgraded the comment section.

I believe Typepad has been improved, or it was down. I thought I had been IP banned or something.

I sent one too, I said they should at least alert us.. Its been going for a few hours.

Wow, you realize how hooked you are to this site when the coments section goes down for a few hours.

I had no idea anything was actually wrong, until all the posts wouldnt let me log in. And it wouldnt matter if i refresed the page...

Because I was able to post early this morning, i figured it was something with my computer, and thats why i sent the email

Ned wasn't playing dumb, he really is dumb.

lol i had too.

but really, it was a good interview. he basically said the Indians wanted Kershaw for Lee and the Dodgers obviously declined

he was asked if the young player he didnt want to give up was Ethier or Kemp and he said no. Then when asked who was it, he said "I'll tell you when he's an all-star".

only logical player is Kershaw since Martin, Bills and Broxton have been all-stars, and i dont think the Indians really would have wanted Loney

Joey, I didnt really put it together... I figured it was more centered around someone Like Dee Gordon.. But Kershaw makes even more sense.

GMs aren't allowed to discuss interest in players until they are free agents. That's not about playing dumb, that's about not getting fined.

Joey, I don't think that's what was going on. Colletti said that the Dodgers offered three players for Lee, and then decided to add a fourth player close to the deadline, but the Indians ended up going with Philly. Patrick asked if Ethier or Kemp were part of the trade and Colletti said no, but they weren't referring to the identity of that fourth player. Ethier, Kemp and Kershaw aren't last minute additions to a trade. I think he was referring to someone in the system they think highly of, but Colletti just didn't want to say who it was.

Adam Dunn translation:

"Please, anybody with talent, come play in Washington... What the hell was I thinking? This team is going nowhere!"

scatterbrian: good stuff, thanks

It's been reported in a couple circles that the Dodgers could have had Lee for Dee Gordon, James McDonald, Andrew Lambo, Ethan Martin, and Chris Withrow. That's a far better package than what Shapiro ended up getting, and I can see why Colletti turned it down.

vta, thats f'in insane. Thats our #1(McDonald), #2(Martin), #3(Lambo), #4(Gordon), and our #5(Withrow). And they got s**t from the Phils. Dumb Indians...

If the Dodgers sign Lackey, the Mets have a problem. They'd need to fill their 2nd rotation spot and I really think Lackey is the guy to do it. Maybe a trade could help sure up the rotation. How much would it cost the Mets to get Aaron Harang and or Bronson Arroyo?

2nd base help? Why do the Dodgers hate Orlando Hudson so much?

huzzah, that is a great question.

Its pretty obvious that he was a 1 yr guy and that there isnt a long term future. He wants a 3 yr deal and the dodgers have too many internal options to go long term at another IF spot...

Hudson has no desire to come back to the Dodgers anyways.

i just read that on Twitter from baseball prospectus. i cant find a link though

Priority= sign john lackey or trade for a ace to be your 1a.

Or be like the yankees and sign matt holliday, john lackey and joel pinero

Forget about matt holliday and sign john lackey to a 5year 90 million deal
And trade for roy halladay giving up jennry mejia, reuben tejada, scott moviel, wilmer flores, jon niese, and jefrey marte. Anyone but fernando martinez ike davis and bradley holt because they could/ should be part of 2010- 2011 lineup/ pitching staff

Mid season trade if possible for a bat but pitching should be a ble to carry the lineup

Hudson has no desire to come back to the Dodgers anyways.

i just read that on Twitter from baseball prospectus. i cant find a link though

I do not blame him, Joe Torre screwed the Dodgers and Hudson by not playing him.

Not sure what's wrong with Hudson, Belliard, or Dewitt...but I can see them snatching Freddy Sanchez away from the Giants. He would rather play for the Doyers and have a chance to go to the playoffs...Giants will play Velez at 2nd, Uribe at 3rd and make a run at Jason Bay.

Yeah Sanchez being from Burbank, he might take a lil less to sign him the Dodgers. Hes not a bad option, and if he did sign with us it would piss off Giants fans..
HA, give him the same contract as Hudson.

"And trade for roy halladay giving up jennry mejia, reuben tejada, scott moviel, wilmer flores, jon niese, and jefrey marte"

That's actually not the worst offer, it's just more quantity than quality.

Mejia is an excellent prospect, Niese, Moviel and Tejada are solid but have relatively low upsides, and the two high-upside guys, Flores and Marte, had rough years in A ball, although there's still a lot of time for improvement there.

Certainly a decent offer for one year of an ace, but I'm just not sure that the Blue Jays deal their ace without getting that cornerstone-type prospect in return, like Fernando Martinez.

Then again, there was no cornerstone-type in the Cliff Lee trade, Knapp is too far away to be considered that type of prospect yet, and Lee was under control for longer at a cheaper rate.

I think the blue jays cant ask for much more.

Fernando shouldn't be added becausew they should use him at left field next year.
