The Brewers declined their $6.5MM mutual option on pitcher Braden Looper, according to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. They'll instead pay a $1MM buyout. Looper posted a 5.22 ERA in 194.6 innings this year; the same kind of financial commitment can probably snag the Brewers someone better. Looper is a Type B free agent, but an arbitration offer is highly unlikely.
MLB.com's Adam McCalvy talked to Brewers GM Doug Melvin, who said he'd still consider Looper but wanted to gain flexibility.

Good, That 5 million will be better spent elsewhere, talks of John Lackey to the BrewCrew is heating up.

Should be interesting to see how the Brewers rotation shapes up this off-season, and it should be even more interesting when they have $14mm to spend next off-season with Jeff Suppan off the books... and nother $7mm with Bill Hall's commitment erased... Here's my predictions...
Dave Bush is non-tendered.
Yovani Gallardo
Doug Davis
Jeff Suppan
Brett Myers
Manny Parra
And make a push at the end of 2'10 for Halladay, Lee, Vazquez or Webb.

This makes me erect... melvin is doing everything correct right now and im lovin it

brewsers,
Where did you hear that? Lackey wants to be part of a contender. Not a team whose going to finish in 3rd or 4th place. Lackey will either sign with one of the New York teams or the Angels. I do agree with Westcoastbias. I think Myers will land in Milwaukee.

I don't see Dave Bush being non-tendered. The guy is good when healthy. I would LIKE to see Suppan moved to the pen but no one gets everything they want. Not bringing back Looper is another wise move made by doug melvin. Can't wait to see who they get for starting pitching.

BleedingCubbie...you are a moron to think the Mets will finish anywhere ahead of the brewers in the race for lackey, he wants money, he will be attracted to the crew because of the young talent, and from many inside sources at UW-Oshkosh (Jarrod Washburns Alma Matter) He is looking for 2-3 years from 6-8 million a year either from Minnesota or Milwaukee, so i see us getting Washburn, a good shot at lackey as well since we just got rid of looper, and we will dump suppan and look at Doug Davis or Randy Wolf.

Bleedingcubbieblue,
I think adding Lackey and subtracting Looper puts the Brewers ahead of your Cubs, so if that's not a contender, you don't have one either.
Posted by: DaveinEG | November 13, 2009 at 01:35 PM
The Cubs and Mets are contenders based on name recognition I guess, they aren't any better than Milwaukee.
Posted by: bigpat | November 13, 2009 at 01:48 PM
That's the thing that irks me most about Cubs fans: Since 2005, when Mark Attanasio became principal owner of the Brewers, their Win/Loss records are nearly identical, (within a win or two) and yet the Cubs payroll has probably averaged around 40 to 50 million more a season than Milwaukee. Sure, they may have had one additional postseason appearance in that time, but when you get yourself swept in the first-round, it doesn't really matter, does it?
In short, Cubs fans, stop being so brazen about how great your club is when there is next to no evidence you can cite to prove it.
Also: Happy to see Melvin actually declined the option... I figured he would, but then I figured he wouldn't have exercised the option on Cameron last year.

Cappy should be back sometime early to mid season as well, the Brewers should be serious contenders for a long playoff run this year if the offseason pans out liek we'd hope.

Alright, so Hardy's gone ($5 mil), Cameron's gone ($10 mil), Weathers' gone (#3.3 mil), Looper's gone ($5.5 mil). That gives us $23.8 million to spend this offseason. That can definitely give us a good shot at getting Lackey. Also, word is that Doug Melvin has been in talks with the Tigers about Edwin Jackson. Can you imagine that?
Gallardo
Jackson
Lackey
Bush
Parra
That could be deadly. It's making me salivate right now. I'm looking forward to seeing what goes down in the coming days.

sage - that rotation plus Mulder with Narveson/Suppan competing for long relief would be fantastic...you're math is a bit off though since there are arby raises of anywhere from $4-6 mil and salary raises for about $6 mil built in for returning players
