| Orioles Rumors: Bedard, Third Base, Adam Jones »

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has his finger on the pulse of the Cardinals...
- GM John Mozeliak explained that his offer for Matt Holliday will be firm: "I think it's fair to say when we present an offer, that's pretty much going to be our position. We're not really interested in becoming involved in a long, drawn-out back-and-forth." As is typical of these situations, Mozeliak would like the situation to be resolved more quickly than Scott Boras typically works.
- Where would the Holliday money go if the slugger signs elsewhere? A veteran third baseman is one possibility, though the Cards haven't expressed interest in Chone Figgins. Mark DeRosa could still fit at third base or even left field if Holliday leaves.
- Strauss has Mozeliak saying earlier this week that the Holliday money could be allocated toward the rotation (but probably not for a John Lackey signing).
maybe Holliday, bostons plan b, comes to the Red Sox and Bay goes to the Cardinals

I bet the money goes back into DeWitt's wallet if they don't sign Holliday.

i'd be fine with Nady. He'd obviously be cheaper and we could invest more money in the rotation or a 8th inning / closer if Franklin bombs. Then, lets see where we are in July. We could afford to add a big piece for a playoff run with the money saved.

I think all bets are off on who is Boston's plan A and B for left field. But the Cards, I don't think they can afford expensive long term contracts for either Holliday or Bay when you have to consider Pujols and Wainright are going to need huge paydays soon. I wouldn't be surprised to see them becoming players for Damon.

I think that if the cardinals are trying to avoid bringing in high priced talent, then Damon would have to be off the table as well. Damon will probably require a multi-year deal for around what he got last time. I know he is four years older, but his numbers in new york were very similar and high, and his last year was the best year (ironically like when he left Boston). Maybe the cardinals are players for Uggla then, he is younger, hits alot of home runs and might come a bit cheaper

Does anybody really care what Scott Boras thinks? If I am St Louis, give your proposal, let Boras (not Holliday as it should be) reject it, and move on! Not everyone needs to be bullied by the loose tongue, anti-good guy, Boras!

i understand that uggla is not an outfielder, but since i am hearing the sox are thinking of bringing in Uggla to fill left field, maybe the cards would consider this as well

The Yankees don't have a shortstop? And when did this become a post about them?

Ok, if we don't sign Holliday, then we had better do something big. I don't mind the Nady idea, but I don't know if we could count on him to play everyday and produce in the lineup. I suggest that if we let Holliday walk, then we should go HARD after Chone Figgins. When was the last time we had a SB threat? Not only that, but he is a switch hitter that can lead off for us. I would like to see us sign Nady, Figgins, Garland, Smoltz, and Soriano. Garland is an innings eater and while his ERA isn't outstanding, he could still be relied upon to give us at least 6 innings each start. Smoltz goes into the rotation, but if he starts struggling, move him to the BP. Rafael Soriano would be a great pickup and would solidify our bullpen. McClellan-7th Inning, Soriano-8th Inning, Franklin-9th Inning. And on days that Franklin needs a break, or is injured, Soriano can step into the closer role.
Lineup:
Chone Figgins 3B
Skip Schumaker 2B
Albert Pujols 1B
Ryan Ludwick LF
Xavier Nady RF
Colby Rasmus CF
Yadier Molina C
Brendan Ryan SS
P
Starting Rotation:
Waino
Carp
Lohse
Garland
Smoltz (if struggles, Garcia/Boggs/Hawksworth)
Id say that this looks like a solid team, and we wouldn't have to spend as muuch.

I like the look of that Cardinals lineup.
I do agree though. When the FO doesn't get Holliday signed, they need to go after Figgins. Speed and a great lead off guy to go along with someone who can play multiple positions. LaRussa would fall in love with lil Figgy.

i have an interesting b plan for st louis. i dont know if anyone has said this but roy halladay! it may seem like a long shot but check this out: use that holliday money to bring derosa back, bring pineiro back, and possibly resigning halladay in the future. The lineup would be weakened but the rotation would be one of the best of all time!
Rotation: Roy Halladay
Chris Carpenter
Adam Wainwright
Joel Pineiro
Kyle Lohse
Yeah the rotation talks for itself
Lineup:
1.Schumaker (LF)
2.Ryan (ss)
3.Pujols (1b)
4.Ludwick (RF)
5.Derosa (3b)
6.Rasmus (cf)
7.Molina (c)
8.Lugo (2b)
9.Pitcher
It may not be a spectacular lineup, but the rotation easily makes up for it. Anyone else like this idea?

I like this team, but they could also not resign Pineiro and let Boggs, Hawksworth and Garcia battle for the 5th spot in the rotation. Then sign Figgins to play 3B have Schumaker stay at 2B and move Derosa to LF or vice versa i think those two are interchangeable.
