« Five More Years For Mariano Rivera? | Main | Reds Notes: Ramon Hernandez, Hardy »
The Mariners are discussing a multiyear extension with shortstop Jack Wilson, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Kovacevic believes the Ms offered a two-year deal worth more than $8MM. Soon, the Mariners must decide between Wilson's $8.4MM option for 2010 and a $600K buyout.
Given Wilson's defensive prowess and the scarcity of shortstops, bringing him back at around $4MM a year isn't a bad idea. The free agent market doesn't offer much beyond Marco Scutaro, and J.J. Hardy was just plucked off the trade market by the Twins.

It would be a great signing by Zduriencik if he can get 2 years out of the 8.4M than just the 1 club option. 4M a year would be a positive move. I would even go as high as 2YR/12M that Sanchez got, but I don't think it's necessary.

Seeing this, now, makes me think the Mariners were players on Hardy. After they missed out, Plan-B seems to be re-signing Wilson.
Not a bad idea. Its nice to have probably the best defensive SS in baseball but the Mariners are so offensive starved its just another position where they have a below average bat to try and hide in an already anemic offense.

...and yet the Pirates were supposedly cheap and insulting for only offering Wilson...$8 million over 2 years...and offering Freddy $10 million over 2 years.

It says more than 8M for two years. I think a 2YR/9M-10M is most likely.

I think the supposed insulting part was they wanted him to re-sign for 2 years for what his option was worth for 2010.
Maybe Wilson realizes now that he probably won't get that kind of money going forward in this market.
2years, 10 million is the absolute ceiling Zduriencik should go.

Seattle values defense so much that if an extension can't be reached the Mariners might exercise Jack Wilson's 2010 option.
The $8.4 million salary is more than market value, but the defense-obsessed Mariners might not want to venture into December without a solution at a defensively critical position.
Sometimes a team must overpay for a sure thing. Kenji Kohjima's recently departed annual salary of $8 million would cover the difference between the option and a replacement-level player.
Of course, the Mariners will need to upgrade offensively at other positions.
