| Reds To Cut Payroll, Big Names Could Be Dealt »

While the Edwin Jackson trade rumors are the biggest item out of the Motor City today, here are a few other Tiger-related tidbits...
- The FOX Sports team of Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal are reporting that Detroit is also shopping Gerald Laird. The catcher hit .225/.306/.320 last season while making $2.8MM, and the Tigers would like to save some money by finding another catcher who can hit the same (or, as they surely hope, better) for a lesser contract.
- Michigan native J.J. Putz would be an attractive local-boy candidate for the Detroit bullpen, but Putz told MLB.com's Jason Beck that he is interested in playing for several teams, not just his home-state club. Putz and his agent said they had yet to be contacted by the Tigers.
- MLive.com's Steve Kornacki reports there is "mutual interest" between the Tigers and free agent reliever Brandon Lyon about the right-hander returning to Detroit. Lyon had a strong 2.86 ERA in 65 appearances for the Tigers last season and said that they are "the first team [he] will talk to," though he stressed that he wants a multi-year contract.
At the trading deadline this past year, the Tigers were looking at acquiring Robinzon Diaz from the Pirates. Any chance of those talks happening again?

I know Laird is pretty much an automatic out and I'm not sure how good he is at blocking pitches but he does an incredible job throwing out would be SB threats. I think his rate is somewhere aroung 40-45%.

re they REALLY trying to trade Edwin Jackson because he'll make $ 4 million, or lose Polanco because he could make $ 6 million, or Laird because he could make $ 3.5 million? REALLY? With $ 72 million in BAD contracts on the books for Ordonez, Guillen, Bonderman, Robertson, Willis, and Inge? And Dombrowski is still employed?

Yeah that kinda sucks. I would trade one of those Garbage contracts, just ask the team to take 2 million of it. Save a few million on a couple of contracts and keep the guys who make 6 million, not the ones who make 12-19 million.

I agree Dodgerblue, but which of those huge contracts would YOU take on?
Ordonez $ 18 million?
Bonderman $ 12.5 million?
Willis $ 12 million?
Nate Robertson $ 10 million?
Guillen $ 13 million (x 2 years)?
Inge $ 6.6 million?
Only Guillen stays on the books after the 2011 season. They need to just suck it up, plug the holes for 2010, and get some relief in 2011.

souvenir, take the spam elsewhere. There are plenty of new york topics you can post on.
Guillen comes off the books after 2011.
If dombrowski moves jackson or laird he needs to be investigated for purposefully ruining a team.

IF you had to only take on 2-3 million dollars I would take on
Inge
Bonderman
Robertson
and maybe Maggs

Would you trade Pierre for Carlos Guillen? I wouldn't, but that's been suggested in Detroit.

Can he play second? That's the only place that is open? I thought hes gotten pretty bad in the infield.

When he's healthy, he can play first, third, and probably second. I don't see him being much help to the Dodgers. They need a 2B and pitching.

The Tigers should consider trading Jackson or Laird if it will help the team in 2010 or beyond, but should not trade them merely for payroll considerations. I do not believe Jackson will have the season in 2010 that he had in the first half of 2009. It is certainly possible that Gallaraga will come back in 2010 and perhaps Bondo will be healthy and have a strong season. I believe he is only 26. The team should sign Lyons and do something about shortstop as Everitt is a good defender but doesn't do enough at the plate.

I just posted this possibility on bucsdugout, but I'm curious what Tigers fans would think of this:
Pirates get: Edwin Jackson
Tigers get: Matt Capps, Jason Jaramillo, Gorkys Hernandez
Honestly don't know the outfield depth Detroit has in the minors, but I figured a versatile CF could be enticing with the Pirates really not having any room for the guy. Also, this trade would give the Tigers a Lyons replacement very cheap and under team control. Jaramillo is probably equal or better than Laird and much cheaper.
Thoughts Tigers fans?

Honestly, I really don't like trading a starting pitcher unless we get a starting pitcher in return. I already don't like the idea that we'll be relying on reclamation projects or mediocre rookies to fill two rotation spots.
I'd have been all over Capps a year ago, but now I'm not so sure. He could get lit up in the AL, and he costs more than Jackson, by himself. Gorkys comes out of the Tiger organization, and was sent to Atlanta with Jair Jurrjens for Edgar Renteria (yeah, that was dumb), then went to Pitts in the McLouth deal. Nate is another local Michigan guy that the Tigers should have been all over.
I HATE the idea that the Tigers would trade Jackson, or Laird, or not sign Polanco, or Rodney, or Lyon, because of payroll issues. Our eejit GM gave away $ 72 million in bad contracts, and let Ordonez's option vest for $ 18 million. That would pay a lot of salaries.

Isn't that how big business works when its time to save money...get rid of the janitors and keep the executives
Posted by: gary | November 11, 2009 at 12:10 PM
jlk9697, I would accept that trade in a heartbeat. Jackson is really good, but I would love to see Matt Capps in a Tigers uni. Even though he struggled last year, he could be the shutdown closer that the Tigers have always lacked in recent years. I'd rather have a starter (even a reclamation project like Gorzelanny) than an outfielder though, the Tigers have a million OFs who are in the bigs, big league ready, or close.. (Guillen, Magglio, Granderson, Clete Thomas, Casper Wells, Wilkin Ramirez, Ryan Raburn, etc.)

I can't see them trading laird or Jackson. It sounds like fox is once again creating something out of nothing. It doesn't make sense to let magg's option vest and then cut out huge parts of the team that make 3-5 mill a year. It would only make sense if Jackson was traded for a SS of similar value. From my point of view Jackson got dam tired at the end of last year. I think he has a good shot at an era in the low 4's this year and be a great #3 behind porcello and verlander. Tigers will not compete if he is traded and I personally think this is a BS rumor
