The agent for Jose Valverde says there's mutual interest between the Astros and their free agent closer, according to MLB.com.
The Astros have communicated to Jose their desire to bring him back," Gene Mato explained. "He really enjoyed his time there and is open to the idea of returning."Valverde wants to explore free agency, so the Astros are just one of his options. As a Type A free agent, he'll cost a top draft pick if the Astros offer arbitration. That's not a sure thing, since the reliever could cost about $10MM next year, but rival GMs tell ESPN.com's Buster Olney that the Astros should offer arbitration.
Astros GM Ed Wade said in September that he'd "love" to bring Valverde back. The righty saved 25 games and allowed just 40 hits in 54.0 innings this season, striking out 56.

Hawk proved he could close and had most of the same periph's, also going to be much cheaper. I think the 'Stros should go that route, 2 year deal 6M

It doesn't make sense for a mid-market team like the Astros to commit around 10MM to a closer when they have many other needs.

The Astros need to just go ahead a start the rebuilding process. But as a Reds fan I sort of hope they just let the ship sink.

I love the entitlement yankees fans feel when it comes to players on other teams and their availability.
I realize you're kidding with your lineup and rotation, but it is still reflective of yankees fans as a whole.

GETTING BACK ON TOPIC....
Valverde would be dumb to return to Houston... i can see him going to the Phillies or Rays they sure can use his services
Posted by: LaSenoritaMet! | November 15, 2009 at 09:00 PM
Count the Phillies out: Amaro has (stupidly) committed to lidge as the closer. The Rays would love to have him, although he might be too pricey for their taste. I think you would have to consider the Cubs the favorite if he doesn't re-up in houston.

Maybe the angels can pick him up if they don't feel comfortable with Fuentes and with Oliver unsure of what he will do it would help out their bullpen a whole lot.
Posted by: Aj | November 15, 2009 at 09:11 PM
Yeah, as awesome as it was having him in the 'pen the last two seasons, I don't think bringing him back at the rate he'll command is the best thing for us right now.
If the 'Stros were a closer away from contending, it'd be the obvious choice, but we've got bigger problems than that right now. I would just as soon have Ed Wade spend that money on a REAL 3B (i.e. NOT platooning Geoff Blum and at the hot corner) rather than bringin back a closer who will be way out of our range. I'm sure he'll get FEW SVO's if he comes back...just stupid, doesn't make sense.

Oh, and that Yankees fantasy line-up is about the stupidest thing I've ever seen.
Posted by: thered86 | November 15, 2009 at 09:50 PM
I like how this is a Jose Valverde thread and the guy doesn't even list him in the Yankees bullpen. It's pitiful yet entertaining.

Wow...you guys just wasted 20 posts on a guy who's obviously joking and/or a yearly subscriber to High Times mag and is probably sitting in front of his laptop with the High Times gift coffee mug filled with Maddog 20/20 wearing the High Times t-shirt with yesterday's Domino pizza stains still on it.
That all being said, why the heck would the Astros want to bring back a closer when they lack meaningful games to close? Why not save that $8 mil per or whatever and splurge on next years draft or a couple of international signees?

Can anyone see Lance Berkman or Roy Oswalt resigning with the 'Stros once their current contracts expire? Can anyone see the 'Stros being REAL contenders in the next year or two with a limited budget to fill their holes and a farm system devoid of talent on the upper levels? If not then why not start trading off some of the vets? Berkam can be a FA after 2010 (assuming they decline his $15 mil option). Oswalt has 2 more years left and will be 34 when his contract expires (assuming they decline his $16 mil option for 2011). Carlos Lee might be tough to move as he is owed 3/54. Why hold on to these guys when the team is stuck in mediocrity?

All three have no trade clauses and do not wish to be traded.
Oswalt is probably the only one that would think of waiving his no trade clause in order to go to a contender.
I think the Astros are going to bank on Valverde testing free agency and then offer him arbritration. This will allow them to get two draft picks and save face in front of their fan base. They should also do the same thing with Latroy Hawkins. Offer him arbritration and just let him walk.
Posted by: native_astro | November 15, 2009 at 11:17 PM
I know Berkman is ultr-religous but would he really give up a chance to play for a contender if say...the Sox, Giants or Braves came knockin'?
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | November 15, 2009 at 11:22 PM
No I do not think so. Berkman enjoys being close to home. I could see him maybe going to the Braves to play with Chipper and Bobby Cox but that is about it.
I really wouldn't rule out the Yankees as well. Lance's dad grew up a Yankees fan and Lance grew up watching those guys. He modeled his swing after Micky Mantle. This is why Berkman is a switch hitter.
Posted by: native_astro | November 16, 2009 at 09:41 AM
I do not understand the point of having an expensive closer, if the Astros are never up going into the ninth. Let Val walk, and give the position to Fulchino. My 'stros have much larger holes to fill. As for Berkman, I can see him possibly going to the Rangers, but that's about it. And Oswalt would most likely Retire or sign with the Cards for a year or so, in hopes of returning to the WS.
PS YOYO, you're an idiot.
Posted by: Moe_Berg | November 16, 2009 at 11:24 AM
I say let Valverde walk, too expensive and way too much of a head case. Astros have much bigger needs in their starting rotation.
Posted by: mitch4ya | November 16, 2009 at 11:43 AM
For the record I was suggesting that Berkman should go the Yanks or that the Yanks would want him. Obviously, he's a good 1B and we already have Tex, even though he would probably be a great DH in NYS.
I was just wondering why the 'Stros hadn't begun the rebuilding process.
Posted by: YanksFanSince78 | November 16, 2009 at 02:17 PM
Wow...CORRECTION...
...I was NOT suggesting that Berkman should go to the Yanks....
