Varitek Exercises Player Option

3:47pm: Varitek exercised his option to return to the Red Sox, writes Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe.

9:36am: Jason Varitek must decide on his $3MM option by midnight tonight, according to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald.  Varitek must choose between his Red Sox ties and more playing time (and perhaps less money) elsewhere.  We'll keep you updated.

Just say no, Jason. Please.

Is there anyone out there that would really want to give Varitek an everyday job?

Yeah, he'll probably post a better OBP than Barajas or Olivo, but he's not nearly the power threat.

We're talking about a guy who finished the season posting a .130/.221/.210 line in 113 PA covering his final 31 games of the season.

Wow there are going to be so many posts today and already 5 or 6 wow nice! Its a good day of posting coming up. Varitek if you know whats best for you do not go back to the Red Sox. First of all, you cannot win a championship you will get NO playing time since Martinez is here and you could go to a young team that needs help like say the Giants or the Mets??

As a Red Sox fan, I would like for Jason to turn it down and look elsewhere. But reality is he will most likely exercise his option. I am fine with him being a backup this year, after all he has done for our organization he has earned at least a backup role. Hopefully, after this year though he decides to retire and goes into coaching.

Yawn. Tired of this one already. Feel bad for the guy, he probably does read the papers and sees what the fans are saying, but enough with this one already. If he does pick it up, the Sox are in a pickle for another season with their back stop situation.

if he does not take the deal from the red sox, in so many words, he acknowledges that he is going to retire pretty much

He might just leave the Red Sox, because it is pretty clear that they don't want him anymore. However the Mets have already said that they aren't interested, and I don't know of another team that would have any use for him.

for the other teams in baseball's sake, please accept the player option!!!!!!

Tek has become close to terrible. I don't see any team signing him besides the Sox. What some don't understand is yeah, we have Victor in there now. But who's going to be our backup? The Sox haven't even bothered searching for another backup catcher. I say sign him as short as possible, give them some time to find someone else. You have to think realistically, nobody on the team or management "doesn't want him". There's an attatchment with him and this team, I would say keep him...then make some type of coach out of him.

mburg85, i don't think there is a question of sentimental value of him, however it is proven he is actually hurting the team. Now I am yank fan and as souvenir said, it would be a good thing for other teams if he picks up the option. But lets be serious, virtually any other available catcher would be a tremendous up tick for the sox in terms of agility, and christ, someone who can hit more than .188. The sox probably are not handling this right either, but that doesn't surprise me either. They should be proactive and discuss other options with him. Theo is too busy hearing about trades a day later that he could have been involved in. Varitek should stand up and retire and work within the organization elsewhere. Oddly, he'd probably be a better hitting coach than magdan, whatever the guy you have now name is...Just because he can't hit a watermelon, doesn't mean he does not know how too..

the red sox could always sign josh bard to backup =D hahahaha

Its funny how the "rumor" of Tek going to the Mets got started (see BORASS)..and the Mets saying they are not interested...
Tek has been a warrior for the Sox, and he would be an idiot if he didn't take the 3 mil.. that being said, you know Theo is hoping that Tek walks...

He'll likely accept the 3M since he won't get it elsewhere. But if he does leave there are other options for a decent backup (Zaun for one, or perhaps a G. Kottaras if they can find one of those that doesn't fall asleep in the batter's box).

...And I'm sure whatever happens the Red Sox and Varitek will move ahead on good terms. There's too much history between them for one or the other to pull up a middle finger.

He's a stupid man should have fired Boras last year. Sox are stupid for signing him for 2 yrs. Hope he does the same as last year, and thinks he can become a starter somewhere. Time for the Sox to get younger here, no Veteran back-up, bring in the kids.

Retire, Jason.
Give younger talent a chance...
You are 38!

anywhere. but. boston. please.

" I am fine with him being a backup this year"

All you Red Sox fans that keep post about wanting him back for "sentimental" reasons need to wake up.. There is a 100% REAL reason he never caught Wakefield and it didn't have a thing to do with giving him a day off when he pitched.. he flat out could not catch the knuckleball.. PERIOD..

Charlie Zink has (or was until released a few days ago) a knucleballer in the Sox system for 6-7 years and every catcher coming up through the Sox system therefore have experience catching it, that means George Kotteras, Dusty brown, even mark Wagner if he had a terrific spring all know how to catch a knucker and Varitek flat out can't.

It's hard enough to handle a knuckleball for a guy that knows how to and can, how about a guy that has tried and FAILED, plus cannot hit, nor throw?

Dump this turd and stop this sentimental crap, all he will do is hurt the team. you want V-Mart to have to catch him and get hurt, then get stuck with Varitek as the starter???

Back-up role, back-up the car take your belongings out of the locker, wait for calls from other teams.
Talking about cricket sounds.

Varitek accepts for $3mil.
Sox buy him out for $3mil.
Varitek becomes a coach with the Sox, eventually becomes a pitching coach.
No one was ever better prepared to face opposing hitters.
Kottaras continues to be Wakefield's catcher.

he cant catch a knuckle ball.he cant bat for his life, and hes 38!!!!!!

Red Sox buy him out for $2 million. He gauges interest from other teams - finds none and retires.

People, people: V-mart did an admirable job catching the knuckler.. instead tek can spell him by caddying Lester (eg, on the days when run-scoring will be less important)

I wonder if this means Kottaras will be non-tendered.

we'll take him in seattle. better than rob johnson

WHY???? 3M dollars. Give him a check and be done with the BOZO.

Oh well Red Sox fans, only one more season.

Can the Sox still buy him out or is he now locked in unless they waive him?

Yes, Varitek is done, but as a back-up (albeit a highly-paid one), he doesn't hurt the team offensively much and probably is worth the $3MM in terms of helping manage the staff for one final year. With lots of additional rest, he might even be able to manage the type of numbers he had in the first half of 2009 (when he had almost all of his 15 HR/50 RBI) over the course of 2010. That would be more than acceptable. He doesn't have to compare to a Posada or Mauer, he just has to compare to a Cervelli or Zaun.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo!

yet another done player sadly thinking they can contribute and deserve money that a younger player wouldnt need while outproducing said player.

Oh come on, folks. I would much rather have Tek than Cash, Kottaras, Mirabelli, or any of the other scrubs they've had out there as backup catchers. The guy can call a mean game. And if the Sox decide to finally start making the pitchers more aware of baserunners, the steals would become less of a problem.

"Can the Sox still buy him out or is he now locked in unless they waive him?"

No buyout. So yeah, it's pay him $3M to become a FA or pay $3M for him to back up Martinez. They'll probably wait until ST to decide what to do with him. Still would like to see him taking on some kind of coaching position.

While hes a huge upgrade offensively, Victor Martinez isnt much of an upgrade defensively over Varitek. He is also a pretty bad catcher. Cleveland had pretty much decided he was a first baseman by the start of 09 and were starting to move him over there. He is nearly as bad at throwing out runners as Varitek is.

He calls a great game. Go to the Radio Booth and call it from there. V-Mart is underated as a catcher too. Some of the best pitched games latter in the season, V-Mart caught. You know why he lets the pitcher decide what is working. Bucholz said this in an interview. He hated pitching to Varitek.

"While hes a huge upgrade offensively, Victor Martinez isnt much of an upgrade defensively over Varitek. He is also a pretty bad catcher."

Got any proof to back up that claim?

Because according to some great work done by Driveline Mechanics recently we see that Victor Martinez is actually just a slightly below average catcher.

In fact he was 3.5 runs better than Varitek meaning he was closer to being as good as Teagarden and Pudge than he was to being as bad as Varitek.

"Because according to some great work done by Driveline Mechanics recently we see that Victor Martinez is actually just a slightly below average catcher."

Yeah but he can't throw anymore. He has one of the worst arms in the league among catchers and is just as easy to run on as Varitek.

" The guy can call a mean game. And if the Sox decide to finally start making the pitchers more aware of baserunners"

Like Lester, who is always amongst the tops in the league in pickoffs, or Bucholz who pays far too much attention to runners on base than the batter?

Kotteras has a cannon for an arm, but just "doddles" with his release and needs somebody to work with him on that finally, Varitek just flat out cannot throw any longer. Kotteras also can at least "turn on" an inside pitch, where 'Tek cannot turn on anything anymore.

No, Tek this year realised he wasn't going to get squat on the market. Basic greed made him take that 3M, since he has to realise he's not going to get into more that 40-50 games, so no chance he gets to the 1st 90 games for the 1st bonus of his to kick in and nobody signs weak armed catchers that cannot hit their own weight.. That intangibles tag won't even work on Neal Huntington, nor Omar Minaya..

YESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! vtek is my favorite player and is a key part to the sox organization

50 games should be about right. I agree Johns, now he is about money all the way. Anybody in their right mind sees that their playing days are over. Should start their second career.
What gets me mad about the guy is he never tried to change anything in his swing last year, nor did he think that batting from the left side is just hurting the team. A poor excuse for someone who wears a "C", on his jersey. Management will probably never do this again. No need to anyway, these are grown men not High School players.

@ Lock

As a Sox fan, I feel obligated to inform you of the front office strategy employed by the Epstein-era staff.
1. Use a power player as much as you can, until situation sours.
2. Release power player.
3. Slander player in media as much as possible, praising replacement as you would the second coming of Christ.

hahahah sox fans

Look I love and respect the hell out of Tek but i think its time to call it quits. True hes a great teammate to have in the clubhouse and a good leader, but he cant back anything up on the field... so tek for your legacies sake and for sox fans everywhere lets get realistic

METS!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD FIT HE'LL PLAY EVERY DAY AND HELP THE TERRIBLE PITCHING STAFF.
