Royals Sign John Parrish

By Tim Dierkes | January 4, 2010 at 3:50pm CDT

The Royals signed lefty John Parrish to a minor league deal, according to a team press release.  Parrish, 32, missed all of '09 with a shoulder injury.  In 2008 he posted a 4.5 K/9, 3.2 BB/9, and 4.04 ERA in 42.3 innings for the Blue Jays.  He has not had success against lefties in recent years.

We need to be optimistic about these minor league signings. possibly the next david aardsma? (even though he wasnt a minor league signing)

I don’t think he has the upside to be the next Aardsma, but he could be a decent mid-season callup.

yeah but the whole point of minor league signings is that you never know. How could have thought that Aardsma or Kevin Correia would do what they did?

Aardsma was always an intriguing arm with a lot of potential (mostly due to his fastball velocity). Correia had some nice seasons as a reliever/spot starter before last year.
But as I look at Parrish’s numbers of years past, I see a pretty decent pitcher. I don’t think he has much upside, but he could be a league average hurler next year. And I’m rooting for him, as a Jays fan.

Please don’t try and avoid the undeniable fact that John Parrish has no value at all.

Technically, you’re right–anyone could be the next David Aardsma. However, it’s more likely he’ll be the next, well, John Parrish.

Parrish is very useful when he has some control. He’s pretty useless when he can’t. He’s a good guy, so I hope that KC signed the good version.

Another underwhelming Royals rehab signing. Not as bad as a major-league contract to Brian Anderson, but likely just a stop-gap Hans Brinker type who’ll get a turn somewhere down the line. Not as promising as Campillo, but still… Good luck on the comeback Mr Parrish.

Campillo, Betement, now Parish can never have enough depth.
