Blue Jays Release Joey Gathright

The Blue Jays released outfielder Joey Gathright, reports's Jordan Bastian.  The Jays gave Gathright plenty of spring playing time – 43 plate appearances – and he hit just .167/.186/.167.

Gathright, 29 in April, spent most of 2009 with Baltimore's Triple A club.  He hit .329/.386/.376 there, swiping 24 bags in 80 games.

The Gathright cut comes as no surprise, as Bastian wrote yesterday that Toronto's final bench spot would probably go to Jeremy Reed or Mike McCoy.

This looks to be the end for Gathright. Every single free agent OF is better than him.

Shame for Gathright all of that speed, he just never figured out how to make use of it.

Wooo mike McCoy! Win that roster spot like you’ve won our hearts!

He could be a pinch runner. Although he’s probably not worth a roster spot until September…

Redundant skillset to Omar Quintanilla. I was the Mike McCoy fan club on Purple Row.

cool. he may very well get 350-400 PAs in 2010

I don’t think he’s a very good basestealer though and his offensive skills are just putrid. I don’t see the point in having him as anything other than AAA filler.

He could be a pinch runner as well. Probably not worth a bench spot except in September though…
