Roman Colon Clears Waivers

By Mike Axisa | April 21, 2010 at 12:42pm CDT

WEDNESDAY, 12:42pm: Colon cleared waivers and accepted a Triple A assignment, tweets Dutton.

FRIDAY, 11:20am: The Royals have designated reliever Roman Colon for assignment, tweets Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star. The move frees up a roster spot for righty Josh Rupe, who was summoned from Triple-A.

The 30-year-old Colon appeared in five games this year, allowing five hits and four runs in two innings pitched. He walked two and struck out just one. In 179.1 career innings, he has a 5.12 ERA and just a 5.9 K/9. Colon's minor league stats (3.93 ERA, 6.2 K/9) are a little more encouraging.

Finally, though I don’t know why Luis Mendoza is still on the team, but at least they’re trying to make some changes to this god-awful bullpen. Though I can’t imagine Rupe doing much better, based on his numbers so far.

Agreed on all of your points.

Not surprising. Roman Colons are often purged.

I guess that Luis Mendoza hasn’t been given as long to fail yet. Colon has really fallen quickly from being the assumed setup guy at the opening of Spring Training to being DFA-ed. Does everyone else read this as no one wants Juan Cruz, even a great discount?

After his poor year last year, I think it’s going to take a lot more than his work so far this season for teams to want him. I bet he’s glad he signed a two year deal though, imagine hitting the market last offseason after the season he had.

Why does Colon still appeal to teams? His fastball is pretty straight and he doesn’t miss a lot of bats, his ability to induce grounders has fluctuated, and he’s already 30.

He’s been given multiple chances to succeed and hasn’t. I think that time has all but ran out for Mr. Colon.

Swapping Rupe for Colon is like pouring mid-grade gasoline on a fire instead of premium. Rany covered the roster situation perfectly this week. Kila and Chris Hayes should be up here, because they are actually competent and confident players with a coherent approach to the game despite the organization’s best efforts to bury them. And also because they have two of the best nicknames I’ve ever heard: Hawaiian Punch and Disco. Think of the ballpark promotions!

Kila has one discernable tool, the ability to draw a walk. He has below average power for a first baseman, below average batting average, and below average defense. The Kila bandwagon has sailed, it’s time to get over it. He’s nothing more than a AAAA player at best. He’s not the Savior some people seem to think he is.

I agree Kila is not a savior, that’s why I described him as competent and not a superstar. One discernible tool is one more than Luis Mendoza, who should also not be on the roster, and one more than Yuni, especially considering his salary. The Process should be focused on guys who project as stars, but in the meantime guys who project as useful, especially cheap guys, should not be overlooked in favor of higher paid veterans who have tools in the abstract but do not really bring enough to the table.

I like the idea of bringing in highly touted pitching prospects who are so far busts as minor league FAs. But the organization needs to give them time and coaching to help them find something that might put them back on track, i.e. learning and tweaking pitches like Greinke and Bannister are doing, instead of just trotting them out there to be slaughtered again in the majors.

I was hoping this would be Cruz or Mendoza, but getting Colon out is good enough for me. Hopefully Bloomquist is the next guy out the door.

Willie hasn’t blown a game… yet… just a fly ball here and there.

Yeah but hes basically taking a roster spot from Aviles. WB is a solid utility player that we just don’t need. Hed probably be perfect for a team like Tampa Bay or Philly. He just serves no point on the team and will be gone after this year anyway, i don’t know why Dayton doesn’t just get rid of him.

Well crap. I was hoping some team would claim Colon or that we’d release him if he cleared, but alas, no such luck.
