Adam Dunn Rumors: Wednesday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 28, 2010 at 9:18pm CDT

The Angels, Tigers, Rangers, Giants, Rays and Rockies were all connected to Adam Dunn in yesterday's round of rumors, but the White Sox may be the best fit of all. Dunn's left-handed bat would fit well into Ozzie Guillen's lineup, but the Nats are asking for Daniel Hudson plus a prospect. Washington could still extend Dunn, who says he'd consider three or four-year deals. Here's the latest on the slugger; we'll add more bullets throughout the evening.

  • The Yankees are interested in Dunn, but the Yanks and Nationals haven't had serious talks yet, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (via Twitter).
  • Dunn is a "bit of a longshot" for the Rockies, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post (Twitter link).
  • Lots of baseball people expect the Nationals to trade Dunn, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (via Twitter). The White Sox and Giants appear to be stronger players for Dunn than the Yankees, according to Sherman (Twitter link).
  • The Rays remain "in the mix" for Dunn, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (Twitter link).

I think the White Sox should do Hudson and a prospect for Dunn…if they can extend Dunn. Sort of like what Philly did with Halladay. The Sox pitching is already pretty good and Dunn gives you 30+ homers and 100+ rbis pretty much every year.

The problem is that the White Sox have no pitching depth beyond their current starting rotation. Trading away Daniel Hudson creates a whole new hole for them. Damn Jake Peavy for getting injured…

They can always sign someone in the offseason and just hope no one gets injured this year…or they can trade for a spot starter in case someone goes down.

The problem is that the White Sox have absolutely ZERO starting pitching depth beyond their current starting rotation. Trading Hudson creates a giant new hole for the Sox. Damn Peavy for getting injured…

Are you going to put Dunn in the OF or at DH where he repeatedly says he’d hate playing?

Trading for Dunn would be the smartest move the Rockies have ever made.

Todd Helton won’t miss too much time though man. I mean, I think Dunn would be a great pickup for any and every team, but the Rox have some needs that can benefit them in different ways than Dunn would. For example, Ryan Theriot would be a nice long-term answer at 2B. Jorge Cantu and his OPS would not be a good fit for the Rockies.

The Rockies would ft with Dunn with Helton and Giambi playing half the time at 1B and Dunn doing the rest. In RF 1/3 Cargo (with smith in left) 1/3 Dunn, 1/3 Spilly and Hawpe. Dunn playing 5/6 of the time is about right. Plus his Defense is not much worse than Hawpe and Giambi (whose time he’s taking)

As we saw with the Lee and Haren deals. It is usually the last team you expect. That’s why I am predicting the Padres as the team that swoops in and snags Dunn. Pads have the payroll flexibility and the prospects to add him. He can play left in Petco, the only area of petco that isn’t gigantic.

I hear somewhere that the Nationals wanted Madison Bumgarner for Dunn…i almost choked on my laughter…a 20 year old STUD lefty with a sub .250 ERA in the majors ALREADY and they want him for a half year rental of Dunn? LOL

The Giants would have to give up something solid for Dunn. Bumgarner’s almost certainly unrealistic, but Rizzo has made a habit of starting with unrealistic with the assumption that he’ll come down. Zack Wheeler would be an intriguing guy to throw into the mix, but the Nats appear to be looking for either big league talent or guys who are close to it. There’s good reason for this…. Ryan Zimmerman’s contract is up after 2013, and with some key pieces like Strasburg, Zimm, Jordan Zimmermann, Storen, and a few others (guys like Desmond & Morgan) in place, with Harper presumably on the way, they’re looking more for guys who will contribute quickly than guys who will contribute 3 years down the road.

Come on Cashman, Get this done! Dunn in Yankee Stadium would be devastating. The Nats can take Joba I have had enough, we’ve given him a chance and he fails, even though he is young. I’d give up Joba/Nova/Miranda, just my opinion.

Dunn a longshot for the Rockies? You mean it’s a longshot for a barely-in-the-race NL team with an entrenched 1B to acquire Adam Dunn? No !@#$.

Yes this makes perfect sense for the Yanks! Dunn said that he doesn’t want to be strictly a DH so he can play LF and give Brett Gardner a day off and play first to give Teixeira a day off and sometimes be a DH and be a bat off the bench, kill 2 birds with one stone! Rizzo said they want starting pitching thats major league ready–Joba, Nova, and a first baseman to replace Dunn with some power, Miranda. Get it dunn Cash-money!

Dunn’s equivalent value is worth a 25-40 prospect, and 2-3 other pieces at least one of them being a solid upside player. And that would be the value in any year…this year it could be a bit higher considering Dunn is by far the best bat on the market (position and defense do knock him some, but for teams looking for a DH that really isn’t a big concern). So when the Nats ask for Beckham or Bumgarner (esp. when they are having down years) the Nat’s aren’t exactly out of the ball park. And although they are unrealistic since those teams aren’t that desperate it sets a high water mark. And when you think about it, it has worked.

If the White Sox deal goes through Hudson + Flowers/Danks/Morel are two top 5 guys according to B.A. (albeit in a weak system). That is a good return and could very well end up as the parameters of that deal.

I would say if the White Sox can get Dunn for only having to give up Hudson and one of Brent Morel/Tyler Flowers/Jordan Danks then they are making out like fat cats. Everyone of those guys are possibly blocked at their respective positions. If they stick with Viciedo at third, which is very possible since he isn’t a complete butcher at the hot corner, then they have no need for Morel. Say the Sox re sign Konerko then that makes it hard for Morel and Viciedo to both make the team. And even further than that, if Tyler Flowers does not pan out as a catcher then he will most likely play first. So that is possibly 4 players for 2 positions. Also I dont really see Quentin or Rios going anywhere and with Jered Mitchell in the future outfield plans then expiring prospect Jordan Danks is definitely trade bait. That could be something they would want to check with Big Brother John first though. Not sure if you would want to risk not being able to ink him because you traded his little brother for a rental player.

There is no way the Yankees could fit Dunn in an everyday lineup… I say there should be a 3 team trade. Giants, Yankees, and Whitesox. Giants trade a pitcher, such as Jonathan Sanchez, Yankees trade Mark Texiera to the Giants and recieve Adam Dunn, and Whitesox… someone complete this for me? How did the other three team trade happen again…? Damn…

I’d be worried about Dunn’s body. In fact, I am going to keep repeating this even when Dunn is well past 500 HR and when he nears 34, eventually I’ll be right and Dunn’s career will end.
