Phillies, Padres Eyeing Tejada, Bloomquist

By Tim Dierkes | July 29, 2010 at 12:28pm CDT

The Padres' chief infield target is Miguel Tejada, reports CBS' Scott Miller.  They're facing competition from the Phillies, who are also said to be after the Orioles infielder.  Last we heard, the Cardinals inquired but didn't get anywhere.

The Padres and Phillies share another target in the Royals' Willie Bloomquist, tweets ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.  Crasnick says the Angels and Yankees have also kicked the tires on the 32-year-old utility man.  Bloomquist is still owed $619K plus performance bonuses.

Willie Bloomquist seems reasonable for the Phillies, especially if the Oswalt deal is approved (which looks very likely) with their financial limitations.

Tejeda will be picked up by the Padres for two 2nd tier prospects.

Do you really think that Tejada will have that big an impact? Everyone is down on Headley and the 2 have very similar numbers, except that Headley has more steals. Do you think Tejada can still play short? If he can’t play short for the Orioles, I don’t think he should be playing there for the Padres.

Having Tejada’s bat at shortstop would be an upgrade. But with a UZR/150 of -11.2 the last time he played shortstop for the Astros… He can’t play shortstop. You could put Adrian out there and he’d have similar range.

I would prefer the Padres get Bloomquist. He fits the mold of ” the little engine that could “, which the whole Padre team is running with this year. If the Padres can’t get the big bat they are looking for and it seems they can’t, adding a solid player with some speed just makes more sense to me. This move may even allow them to send Cabrera down to AAA and get some confidence back. If they do get Tejada where would they play him?

Actually i they bring tejada, they will put him on 3B, and move Headley to LF, since the Padres outfielders are very poor. Gwynn sucks, Venable too. Lets see if they go for Willingham

In this piece it says the Padres are looking for middle infield help. How does moving Headley, who is doing better than everyone thinks, to left and putting Tejada at 3rd help the middle infield? Getting Willingham would be nice. I’d rather him then Hart.

My point is that they need to trade for other things, such as OF, I know Cabrera isnt hitting, but same as Gwynn, and Venable. Trade for Schoo, Willingham, Guillen.

I understand what your saying, they need to do something. I know his name hasn’t been mentioned in rumors with the Padres, but how about bringing in Nyjer Morgan. His numbers are a bit down this year, but when traded last year he really took off for his new team. The Padres would finally have the leadoff man they need and could put even more pressure on opposing on the base paths. Even though getting Willingham wouldn’t bother me, I think Morgan suits the mold the Padres are going for more then him. My dream deadline for the Padres: Morgan, Theriot and Guthrie. We can’t forget that the Padres will probably have to go to some kind of 6 man rotation down the stretch. Theriot allows the Padres to send Cabrera down to AAA to regain some confidence.

I agree with you, but i dont think guthrie will land in SD, they ae asking for too much. I think Myers, Maholm, or Cook would be a good fit. Latos, Garland, Richard, your playoff rotation?

Please god, someone take Willie Boom Boom.

He sucks so goddamn bad, and every Royals manager insists on playing him.

I would be happy with Tejada if he doesn’t require that much in return. Being Latino and having experienced a significant amount of success he would be a wonderful mentor to Evereth.

Cabrera has to go down to AAA and trade for anyone in the infield help.

I agree with you. Theriot could play short and be penciled in at the top of the lineup. He’s not the ” big bat ” we are looking for, but getting more guys on in front of Gonzalez can never hurt.

The Jake Peavy deal went down in a little over 10 minutes, I’m sure 3 days is more than enough time.

I get a good chuckle when I hear someone talk about the Phillies payroll limitations. I think they are mentioned to be linked to every possible deadline target on the market. Let’s add Bautista, Tejada, and Bloomquist to the list today. Tonight Ryan Howard will get hit by a pitch and they will be linked to Cantu, Fielder, and Derrick Lee. I think next year even without Werth their payroll will exceed $150 mil.
