Rangers Designate Joaquin Arias For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 24, 2010 at 6:47pm CDT

The Rangers designated Joaquin Arias for assignment to make room for Alex Cora, according to Anthony Andro of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The Rangers acquired Arias after they obtained Alfonso Soriano for Alex Rodriguez in 2004. According to this report from Jim Callis of Baseball America, the Rangers could have selected Robinson Cano instead of Arias as the player to be named in the trade.

Arias has a .276/.290/.347 line in 101 plate appearances this season. The 25-year-old had a solid 2008 campaign as a reserve for the Rangers, but hasn't hit much in Texas. The Rangers replace him with Cora, who signed with the team last week after a disappointing start to the season with the Mets.

Actually Arias is better in every category…

      Arias .276 .290 .347

      Cora .207 .265 .278

I guess Cora is the missing link for the Rangers lol

I just skimmed the numbers, didn’t realize he had that respectable of an average lol. I looked at his homers, doubles, hits, and PA but not average haha.

          A shame he can’t take a walk.

Craziest thing is that he never swings at the first pitch.

Baseball isn’t only played from the batters box. And Arias’s numbers are a FLUKE regardless!

His average is respectable only because he got so many bloop hits and grounders with eyes in APRIL…

Look at his numbers since APRIL!

So Alex Cora is an upgrade over Joaquin Arias? Is this the same Alex Cora Mets fans bash all the time? Wasn’t it just yesterday we were reading about how the Rangers need depth and Khalil Greene was being greatly missed? Now they dump a younger utility player for an older even less productive player? I think Joaquin Arias will catch on quickly with another team, maybe he could become a Wilson Betemit/Willy Aybar type player.

Betemit and Aybar have some pop. Arias has ZERO pop…

And he isn’t a switch hitter like Betemit and Aybar. I don’t like that comparison personally.

Betemit and Aybar are similar, but Arias is like a Julio Lugo without any pop.

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!Arias has little pop, horrible baseball instincts and a medicore glove at best. ALL of his hits have been weak balls hit into RF. Either soft grounders with eyes or bloops over the 2B head.I LOVE THIS MOVE!!!At least Cora can play some D…we aren’t bringing him up for his bat!

Arias has ZERO baseball instincts. He is a horrible baserunner and always makes questionable defensive decisions. Throwing to the wrong base, not being in the right places for cut-off throws, and he also makes quite a few errors in the field.

His only plus atribute is speed, and when you don’t have baserunning insticnts speed does nothing for you.

Arias looked intriguing for the pirates to take a look as an upgrade over argenis diaz but if what you texas guys say is true then I hope they don’t look into this at least diaz is a silky smooth defender at times.

All Yankee fans can rejoice that the Rangers picked Arias instead of Cano as from the list of 5 players offered to go with Soriano for Arod.

Arias is awful. No other way to describe him. He’s just awful. Cora isn’t really an upgrade offensively, but he’s an upgrade defensively for sure.

      UZR as SS

      Arias: 0.4
      Cora: -1

      UZR as 2b:

      Arias: 0.3
      Cora: 0.2

Cora has no range or arm strength on defense. He has the reputation of being a smart baseball guy, and I wont argue that, but thats the only positive he brings. Mets fans wish cora had gotten all the bloop hits that everyone is saying arias got.
