Poll: Which Team Will Win The World Series?

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | October 6, 2010 at 12:11pm CDT

It's taken years of trades, signings and draft picks for the 2010 playoff teams to get this far. A month from now, one of them will make baseball history and win it all. The Rays or Rangers could win that elusive first World Championship; the Yankees could win yet another one; the Braves could send Bobby Cox to retirement in style. At this point it's nearly impossible to predict who will win it all, but let's not let that stop us from trying.

Who will win the 2010 World Series?

I’m a Phillies fan, and I don’t know why people are taking the Reds so lightly everywhere but on the MLB Network. They have a ton of power in their lineup, and a bullpen that is tailor made for the Phillies with Chapman and Rhodes. I still see the Phillies in Four, but I don’t think it’s going to be a cake-walk. Just like the four game series in Philly back in July. All close games.

I’m a Reds fan so while I wish your team well, I wish them well on their flights home after we win 🙂

However I would like to thank you for pointing all of this out. Its true, the Phillies beat the Reds in head to head most times this year, but I think 90% of them were last at bat or very close 1-0 games.

The more I look at the numbers and the way the games played out, this should be the marquee series of the playoffs this year and its a shame we couldn’t have battled for the NL Crown.

I’ve been looking forward to seeing a Phils/Reds postseason series ever since those 7 amazing games the two teams played in June/July. I was kind of hoping it would be the NLCS instead of the NLDS, but oh well. If the Phillies lose, I’ll root for the Reds to take the WS.

I know me either , on ESPN writers one writer picked the Reds to in and it was Pedro Gomez and he actually picked Yankees beating the Reds in 5 in the WS.Philly is going to be really though for us but this Reds team has battled and taken like you said quite lightly , The Reds was in first for some offsenive stats and top 5 for most of the other ones.Im excited to see how Doc halladay does his first post season game

You realize the reds division sucks?? They play the pirates a bunch of times, who have horrible pitching, brewers etc. Pretty sure that aids their offensive numbers.

Uhm okay someone likes to bash teams, Every Divison has some crappy pitching, But we also routinley faced he Cards who as some of pretty good pitching an we faced other teams with good pitching. So your trying to say that were that high in our offensive cause of luck?

I would try not to bash them if all the other teams werent so bad…I never said anything about luck but the numbers are inflated due to the fact they play in a bad division(other than the cards). Its not their fault but their offense is a bit overrated.

Your a phillies fan? Im not but are you aware of Halladay, Hamels, Oswalt….Halladay had a no hitter in game 1, the reds morale must be rather low. Hamels and Oswalt have been on fire the last few months. I can see a quick sweep for the phillies. Id say phillies vs rangers sounds nice, Lee vs Halladay game one of the WS.

IF the Giants scored consistently AND had that comeback spirit the Phils always flash in late innings – yes, that could definitely be fun. Still, that would only be the League Championship Series – not the World Series.

The Twins are quietly one of the best baseball franchises over the past 10 years. They are just an amazing organization (compliments coming from an Angels fan). Love rooting for them.

Thanks for the respect. I’m convinced we could have finished 8-2 instead of 2-8 (a product of resting players), been the only team to break 100+ wins, and still finished dead last in most polls.

Not complaining, just seems strange a team can be so consistently solid and so consistently disregarded.

Personally, I prefer to fly under the radar.

Three words: East Coast BiasIt’s true that the media directs our attention a lot of the time, and it’s a shame about that. However, the benefit of having a media so focused on its “own” is that it will leave you alone to attend to your own business year after year…and attend to it WELL!

Get over it. The East Coast has won the World Series three years in a row and happens to have three extremely good teams competing again this year. It’s not bias, it’s logic. The Twins likely aren’t getting as much “respect” because they finished with around the same record as the Rays and Yankees and played inferior competition most of the year, plain and simple. It also doesn’t help they once again are stuck in a short series with a team they haven’t been able to beat in the regular or postseason for almost a decade now.

It just so happens that I am a fan of an east coast team myself, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t care about the other 29 teams. I’m not about to pretend that coverage is anything close to equitable when everything one of those east coast teams does wrong is big news. So back atcha buddy — you get over it.

People care more about the East Coast teams, hence why it gets more media coverage. It’s not complicated and complaining about it has no relevance. Historically, by winning three of the past titles (and being 5 of the past 6 WS teams) those east coast teams SHOULD have more coverage, they have to be considered favorites and it would be poor journalism not to recognize those facts. Ratings wise, no surprise here, people care more and tune in more when the Yankees/Red Sox/Phillies are being discussed.

The Twins have carved out a nice little section of midwest fans for themselves and if you look at ESPN picks, they have a nice chunk of believers, but far and wide people still care significantly less about their team as a whole and they won’t garner respect until they take out the Yankees. Joe Mauer gets plenty of attention, as does Gardenhire, as does Morneau and Target Field. But what good is picking the Twins to be in the World Series when history and logic is not on their side? That’s not bias.

There is no bias, it’s simply what people find most interesting. When Brett Favre takes a leak, ESPN cares, and he plays for the Vikings. Same with Peyton Manning in Indi or Albert Pujols in St. Louis.

How exactly have the Twins not been given respect? As the previous Twins fan said, “had they gone 8-2” – But they didn’t. Had the Yankees not finished 8-16 they would have won 100 games too, same with the Rays ending the year. As it stands the Twins finished with the third best AL record and they only have home field because of the wildcard format. And they did that in a division where the second place team would have finished fourth in the AL East.

If they get less coverage than the Yankees and the Rays or if they aren’t picked as highly than I don’t see how there is bias involved at all.

No doubt about that. But this Yankee’s team doesn’t look as tough (rotation or lineup) as years past.

Personally, if the Twins can beat Sabathia tonight, I give them a 55/45 shot of taking the series. Going into tonight, I’m putting them at 35% chance for the series.

If the Twins can beat CC or even get to the bullpen early against him, they can easily win the series. The rest of the Yankees’ pitching is average at best right now.

Game one is monumental for the Twins. It makes Game 2 a must-win for the Yankees with an unsure Pettitte pitching against arguably the Twins most reliable starter in Minnesota.

However, if the Yankees win Game 1, they take home field, and personally, assuming it goes that far, I think the Yankees at least have game 4 in the bag with CC at home against Blackburn. That would mean New York would have to win one game in Games 2 and 3.

Huge game for the Twins tonight.

That logic would come back and haunt any team playing the Yankees. Granderson and Gardner are tossed to the side like they are scrubs by non yankees fans, and let me tell you from watching them all season they are under the radar weapons that can beat you in different ways.

I don’t underestimate Granderson for a heartbeat – thought that kid was special many years ago, and he remains so. And he proved it last night with a monster triple.

I think Gardner, however, looks alot like Podsednik on most any other team. Useful, but pretty one-dimensional.

I just look at Jeter-Swisher-Tex-Arod-Cano-Thames at the top of that order and don’t think they measure up to, say, the 2004 version of Jeter-Williams-ARod-Giambi-Shef-Matsui. Maybe it’s just the diminished power, Jeter’s down year, ARod’s declining with age, etc.

Giants’ ‘Lincecum, Cain and pray for rain’ pitching staff will bring San Francisco its first WS win over the Twins. Of course, I could be wrong.

One thing you are wrong about is the use of the “…pray for rain” adage. That is used for a team with a couple great pitchers and a bunch of not so great ones. The entire Giants pitching staff has been stellar, especially over the past month or so. Well, except for the guy who is paid like an ace and pitches like quite the opposite….

My feeling is Phillies over Twins in the WS. The way the Yankees and Rays performed in the last two months of the season gives me little confidence in either of them advancing and once you get past Lee, the Rangers are not quite as intimidating, in my opinion. That said, no AL team seems to be as balanced as some of the NL contenders, the Phillies being the most balanced of them in my estimation.

Lee and Cj Wilson are a better 1-2 than Price and Shields….Rays needed game 1(especially at home) and they didnt get it. I say the rangers either sweep or take it in 4. Twins have a better chance beating the yanks than the Ray beating the rangers. Although the twins have been horrible vs the yankees, I think they might be able to pull it out since the yankees pitching staff past cc isnt great.
