Blue Jays Acquire Jayson Nix

By Tim Dierkes | March 29, 2011 at 2:56pm CDT

The Blue Jays acquired infielder Jayson Nix from the Indians for cash considerations, according to a tweet from the team.  The Jays will have to find a spot for Nix on the 25-man roster or risk losing him to a waiver claim or free agency.  They found a spot on the 40-man by placing Jesse Carlson on the 60-day DL.

Nix, 28, hit .224/.281/.396 with 14 home runs in 363 plate appearances for the White Sox and Indians last year, playing mostly second and third base.  He was in the mix this spring for a backup infield job with the Tribe, but Adam Everett won that battle.  It became clear yesterday that the Indians would try to trade him.

They saw the Red Sox picking up McKenry and just had to one-up the Red Sox. Those sly minxes.

And at the end of the day, the Red Sox get no one and the Jays get Nix.

This only works when the Yankees make depth moves, Blue Jays are expected to finish 3rd-5th lol

Bautista’s starting in right field, and Lawrie’s going to the minors, so they needed a backup for Encarnacion.

I can’t believe they’re going to play E5 at 3B. Here’s hoping Lawrie comes back up soon! I thought Rivera in RF and Bautista at 3B made more sense to start the season.

Rivera is as bad in RF as E5 is at 3B.

Rivera with no arms and legs cant be worse than E5 at third. Heaven help Lind.

I still believe that Rivera in RF for ST was in order to showcase him as a fielder and try to get something in a trade for him. Bautista was curiously always listed as a OF’er on their active roster I have to think this was the plan all along but kept quiet about it so they could work a trade.

Think I answered my own question. Former first rounder who put up some nice numbers in the PCL … so might be upside.

I’m surprised that Nix didn’t start this year at 3B for the tribe. He’s a better option then Jack Hannahan and Adam Everett. I guess it really doesn’t matter because Lonnie Chisenhall is going to take over this year.

He’s terrible defensively, and the Indians have a lot of young pitchers who need to benefit from good defense

Because he has no defensive versatility, is slow, and has terrible minor league offensive numbers that indicate zero upside, right?

Apparently this is because Cory Patterson is going on the DL.

No, I mean the reason for acquiring Nix, not the roster move that allows them to make it.

Decent depth move , considering when Patterson comes back from DL he’ll likely replace McCoy.

No one is going to replace Johnny Mac. Best utility man the league has ever seen, great guy too. Let’s hope Nix can bring something to the table.

Best utility man? lol. Horrible, horrible bat. But ya best. Wouldn’t mind it at all if we got rid of him. Would take 3 other bench guys on our team before him to come in.

I disagree, he is ++defender. Also since everyone uses this way to project EE’s numbers/potential for this season, if Johnny Mac was given 600 at bats last season he would have projected out to, 108 runs, 152 hits, 92 Rbi’s, and 24HR’s. Doesn’t sound that bad now does he. I realize this is not a scientific way to project stats but he makes for a great utility guy.

Not trying to say Nix is going to be anything like Bautista, but this is the exact same way we got Jose and the same general feeling of “oh just another move”. Nix is decent right now but you never know what can happen.

Hopefully this allows Hill to focus on actually being HEALTHY, maybe going on the DL. I’m tired of watching him play injured, its sickening. Especially to Brandon Morrow.
