Braves Notes: Carroll, Wilson, Diaz

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 31, 2011 at 10:42pm CDT

Congratulations to Chipper Jones, who hit his 450th career home run tonight. Here’s the latest on the franchise that selected the switch-hitter first overall 21 years ago…

  • The Braves, who had interest in Jamey Carroll before acquiring Jack Wilson, could likely have acquired Carroll for a low-level prospect, according to Steve Dilbeck of the LA Times. It’s believed that the Dodgers would have covered the remainder of Carroll’s $2.3MM salary, Dilbeck writes.
  • The player to be named in the Matt Diaz trade will be a low-level prospect from an agreed-upon pool of players, according to David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (on Twitter).
  • The Braves added Diaz because they’re looking ahead to a possible playoff matchup against the Phillies, ESPN.com's Buster Olney writes (on Twitter).

Great pickup Wren.  It would have been nice to get Carroll but Wilson is a slick-fielding nice backup to Gonzalez – much better than Lugo.

Hitting wise, yes. Fielding? about the same. But DANG we got Carroll too? is he eligible for the playoffs?

We didn’t get J. Carroll, says we had interest in him, and yeah he would have been playoff eligible.

Wilson is younger, better. When healty, one of the best defensive SSs in the game. He was sick in Pitt. Mustve led in BBTN webgems in 09.

One of the best. True but Troy Tulowitzki’s the best fielding S.S correct?

Is Troy on our team? No. So he’s not part of this equation

Wilson is hitting .249, but has an OPS of .577 and an OPS+ of 65.  Gonzalez is hitting .226, but has an OPS of .597 and an OPS+ of 64.  It’s not THAT significant of an upgrade, if at all.

And in case of mass injury like last season it keeps Conrad out of the field

Conrad won’t even be on the roster.

        Ross/Hinske/Diaz/Wilson/Heyward will be bench

(I do sniff at last part)

As much as I like Diaz, I would’ve preferred Francoeur, if sticking with former Braves.

He just re-uped for 2 years with the Royals that would have been horrible for us to get that crap contract and dumb for the Royals to sign him then trade him.

The Braves were asking about him before the extension.

It looks the Braves will soon have more middle infielders on their bench than fans in the stands.
