Quick Hits: Phillies, Garcia, Abreu, Beras, Mets

By Zachary Links | March 24, 2012 at 4:36pm CDT

Saturday afternoon linkage..

  • The Phillies appear to be comfortable with beginning the season with Freddy Galvis at second base and are searching for a backup utility infielder via trade rather than a starter, sources tell Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com.
  • Word is that the Yankees offered Freddy Garcia to the Marlins but Miami wasn't interested, tweets Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com.  Garcia, who is a trade candidate following the club's signing of Andy Pettitte, is signed to a one-year deal worth $4MM plus incentives.
  • Angels manager Mike Scioscia and General Manager Jerry Dipoto met with Bobby Abreu following the outfielder's comments to Lider en Deportes.  DiGiovanna writes that the team may have no choice but to release the veteran if he continues to struggle and be a distraction.
  • The case of Jairo Beras and his $4.5MM contract with the Rangers is in the hands of Major League Baseball, but the club is confident that he is 17 years old, writes Jeff Wilson of the Star-Telgram.  Beras' biological father also told the paper that Beras is in fact 17.
  • The Mets are facing a serious numbers crunch on the 40-man roster, writes Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.

8m for a poor man’s version of Johnny Damon sitting on the bench isn’t a distraction? no wonder they still have him and are unable to unload him.. I do hear Philly has Joe Blanton available, but even Philly would want something back in exchange to take on Abreu.

“Word is that the Yankees offered Freddy Garcia to the Marlins but Miami wasn’t interested…”

Something tells me that at some point early in the regular season the Yankees will work a trade for with the Angels, swapping Garcia for Abreau.  There will have to be some things worked out salary wise to make it work, but It would not surprise me in the least.

I could see that happening also.. and if the angels are saying they would would release him.. then im sure they would be willing to cover most of his salary in a trade…

How about the Angels send Abreu, Alberto Callaspo, and 2MM to the Tigers for Brandon Inge and a lower level prospect? Inge could help mentor Trumbo into the 3b position and be a . And the Tigers could use Bobby in the leadoff spot and get him ABs in LF/DH switching off with Delmon. As much as I hate Bobby defensively, they need more speed and Abreu’s always a lock for double digit steals.  The Tigers could use Callaspo at 2b and finally get good defense and offense from the position. Raburn is having an incredible spring, but I don’t put much stock in spring numbers. Detroit has always been a hotspot for Venezuelans so why not get two more in Abreu and Callaspo.

Why would the Angels give that up for something the tigers don’t even want?

i don’t think the Angels want Bobby Abreu either and very few teams actually need or want a DH. Also, Callaspo is a backup 3b for them with Trumbo playing there now. A move like this would clear some payroll for Oswalt

Why would the Angels trade their starting 3B AND one of their DH’s AND 2 million for Detroit’s junk?  I wouldn’t even do Abreu for Inge.

You should do Abreu for Inge. Inge makes a lot less, so he’s about 9 times easier to release outright.

The Angels would still clear several million in payroll with this move. Enough to add Oswalt. And I was under the impression that Trumbo is their starting 3b.

Depends on what day it is and whatever certificate he can lay his hands on at the time…

If I were the Commissioner (and I’m not), one of two things would happen.

        1) The deal would be voided because Beras was found to be lying about his age.

        2) The deal would be voided because Beras wasn’t found to be lying about his age, and since MLB and most its teams believed him to be 16 then there was an unfair advantage. I would make him a free agent for 30 days. It would be up to the player and his shady associates to either accept the Rangers offer or negotiate with other teams, but I would not approve any offer until May 1 (or whatever 30 days happened to be).

Of course Beras was lying about his age, either then, or now.  The contract should be voided and Beras possibly suspended for a year regardless of how old he really is.  Its just a matter of should the Rangers be penalized as well.

If the Yanks have any say whatsoever in the matter, Freddy Garcia will not be on the Opening Day Roster.  A career starter, Garcia takes a long time to warm up, not an asset one wants in a reliever.  Plus, he’s an off-speed pitcher who can’t afford irregular work.  On top of that, if he doesn’t make the starting rotation, he’ll be disgruntled all season, something anathema for a team that prides itself on having a harmonious Clubhouse.  Add all that up, I see Garcia going to either LAA, Cleveland or maybe St. Louis since Carpenter’s out-of-action and they seem to have no interest in Roy Oswalt.

Beras will be a Ranger. I’d day the article that he was 17 written by a Yankees scout pretty much clinches it. Too bad for the other teams…you snooze, you lose.

That’s because the Marlins have been like a teenager getting their first credit card this offseason. For the team’s sake I hope that they sell as many tickets over the next five years as they think they will to pay the bills.

What? The Marlins trade for Zambrano, ONE guy, and all of a sudden they are the trading dump of MLB? That makes no sense, considering that the fish have to pay almost none of his salary and he’s an upgrade over Chris Volstad. Say whatever you want about Miami, they are a much better team now and you should expect good things from them this season.

I know he just signed with the Phillies this offseason, but Nix for Izturis seem to work out pretty well for both sides.

If he signed this off season Nix can’t be traded until June.. the same is true with Garcia.  You can’t sign and trade in baseball.
