Quick Hits: Phillips, Lannan, Aramis

Saturday afternoon linkage …

  • Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty expects to meet with Brandon Phillips’ agents soon, writes Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. Things have been quiet between the two parties regarding a potential contract extension since the latter part of the offseason. Phillips can hit free agency after this season.
  • Bill Ladson and Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com write that with trade rumors surrounding John Lannan, the pitcher has to know he's probably auditioning for more than just the Nationals this spring. One source told Ladson earlier this week that he believes the Nats will trade the hurler before Opening Day.
  • Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez found out from Cubs president Theo Epstein in October that the North Siders wouldn't be picking up his 2012 option, according to Carrie Muskat of MLB.com"[Epstein] said they were going to go young," Ramirez said.

MLBTR's Dan Mennella contributed to this post.

The reds need to get the phillips extension done. He deserves it and has always been a key member of the team!

  3. What had happened was that Ramirez had exercised his part of the option, but the Cubs declined there end of the mutual option.

He’s not the best 2B in the league, but he is more than likely the best defensive 2B in baseball. He is certainly a top 5-8 2B in baseball, so I don’t see how he’s overrated. Nobody said he was the best.

I think he’s the best 2B in the NL.

Rickie Weeks, Dan Uggla, and Chase Utley would all disagree with you

Weeks is the only one of those I’d take over Phillips.

They could disagree. Doesn’t mean they’d be right.

Thanks for the laughs on Dan Uggla being better than BP.  That was funny.

lower AVG, more HR, RBI, BP is better defensively but i wouldnt laugh at the comparison

I did laugh, will laugh now, and laugh some more later.

Last year, Uggla went on the most unlikely of hitting streaks, and still managed to hit only .233 with a .764 OPS.  He’s very limited defensively, and his RBI total is more a function of his position in the middle of the Braves lineup than it is superior hitting ability.

Last year, BP hit .300 with an .810 OPS, won a gold glove at 2B, and equaled Uggla’s RBi total from the top of the Reds order.

So yes, the comparison is funny, unless you’re trying to say that BP is a better 2B than Uggla.
