Padres Acquire Brian Tallet From Pirates

By Zachary Links | April 8, 2012 at 8:35am CDT

The Padres traded for Pirates left-hander Brian Tallet, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com (via Twitter).  Pittsburgh will either receive cash considerations or a player to be named later for the reliever, Brock tweets.

Tallet, 34, owns a 4.79 ERA with 6.6 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 across nine seasons in the majors.  Last season, the left-hander saw just 13.1 innings of work for the Cardinals and Blue Jays thanks to a broken left hand followed by a right intercostal strain.

Living in Canada, I watch just about every Blue Jay game on TV. I’ve seen this guy pitch for them a bunch of times over the years, and I do not understand what the Pads see in him. Long man/innings eater at best. Career 4.79 ERA as a reliever…

Never again did I think I would see the headline that some team traded for Brian Tallet.  Hell must have officially froze over.

I’m not sure if the Padres ever received something for Ryan Ludwick last year, this could be who they got in return.  Tallett isn’t the most talented guy out there, but having a second lefty in the pen never hurts.  This is a move you’d think you’d see later in the year with a team “loading up” their bullpen for a run, but maybe Thatcher is hurting again or maybe they will send him down to Tucson to help mentor the kids with Suppan.

They received cash from what I was told.

by “what [you were] told”,you mean what was reported in the press, right?

Probably not the press.  Was it really worthwhile to report it?

No, told by the Padres beat writer Corey Brock.

Great news for the Pirates, nice to not have to worry about seeing this guy on the major league team now.

This must be a resolution of the Ludwick trade.  The Padres probably had the option of returning the cash and getting a player.  Whatever.  We have a system stocked full of players.  Im sure we could have brought up Spence, Boxberger or Cory Burns instead of this clown.

Spence was called up. Moseley was put on the DL. Bass is moving from pen to starting rotation.

Tallet was signed to a minor league deal by the Padres. Hes just minor league depth.

May his beard/’stache/chops or any combination of the three bring the Pads good luck this season.
