Braves Sign Lucas Sims

By Zachary Links | June 7, 2012 at 2:35pm CDT

THURSDAY: Sims will obtain a bonus of $1.65MM, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (on Twitter). The Braves announced that they have signed Sims (Twitter link).

WEDNESDAY: Braves scouting director Tony DeMacio revealed that the club agreed to sign first round pick Lucas Sims, according to Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  The right-hander from Georgia's Brookwood High School was tabbed with the 21st overall pick.  Terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed but the pick has a suggested bonus of $1.825MM.

In addition to Sims, the Braves also reached agreement with their other top five selections.  That includes second round pick Alex Wood (left-handed pitcher), third round pick Bryan De La Rosa (catcher), fourth round selection Justin Black (center fielder, already signed), fifth rounder Blake Brown (right fielder), and sixth round pick Josh Elander (catcher).

That’s pretty impressive to sign the first 6 rounds worth of picks this quickly.

Just drafted and he’s automatically successful enough to make rotation. Why don’t you let him throw at least one professional pitch first?

So, besides the signing bonus, the draft picks get a six year deal with a minimal salary?  I think the team has newly signed draftees under control for six years?

    Thanks.

Actually a team has control over a player for much longer than 6 years! You have 3 years to make the 40 man roster or be subject to Rule 5 draft!  After being placed on 40 man you have 3 options on their contract.  Once in the Bigs they have 3 years of minimum salary then 3 years of arbitration.  Now there are many things that come into play that can change things.

So if a player follows this time line the team has control over him for 12 years!

Looks like it’s about $1100 per month, with nominal bonuses and raises at service time increases.  …and I saw seven years instead of six.

I think its 4 years of pre 40 man roster for HS and 3 for College but I dont know if that changed with new CBA?
