Yankees Designate DeWayne Wise For Assignment

By Steve Adams | July 23, 2012 at 5:57pm CDT

The Yankees have designated Dewayne Wise for assignment in order to make room on the roster for Ichiro Suzuki, tweets Marc Carig of the Star-Ledger.

The 34-year-old Wise hit .262/.286/.492 in 63 plate appearances for the Yankees this season. Wise signed a minor league deal with New York shortly after the calendar flipped to 2012. The Yankees were Wise's sixth team; the veteran outfielder has also seen Major League time with the Blue Jays, Reds, Marlins, Braves, and White Sox. He's a career .222/.258/.381 hitter.

    Feel bad for Wise.
He busted his tail off in limited playing time. (.778 OPS 0.3 OWAR)
    But in the end, Ichiro!!!

In comparison BRef gives Ichiro 0.2 OWAR. But it’s okay. By getting Ichiro and giving up Wise, we got to get rid of pitching prospects.

This is always good. Remember when we gave up Zach McAllister for a month or two of Austin Kearns?

I’m still in shock. What in the flipity flop just happened? Ichiro is a Yankee now. I’ll let it sink in again. Ichiro is now a Yankee!?

Wise makes more circles around the league than a gerbil does on a habi-trail..

They have 5 outfielders as it is without wise. Even if you not a fan of Qualls, he can provide some innings if need be. Its sad to see him go, but there is no need for him unless they felt swisher needed the dl.

Too bad. Wise wasn’t anything special but he was a decent backup OF.

Wise has been just as good as Ichiro this season, both offensively and defensively, at a fraction of the cost.

In such a small sample size, yes. Throw Dwayne out there for 400+ ABs and his numbers don’t hold. Dwayne was a good outfielder but lets not kid and compare him to Ichiro.

Don’t even see how he could compare them. Ichiro is getting older, but he could turn it around. Its a has been vs never has been.

OOOOH! PICK ME!!! Going from the team with WORST record in baseball to the team with the BEST record in baseball and a chance to contend for a ring. Yeah, bad move for the Yanks to pick up 10 time gold glove speedster with a cannon for an arm as a rental I mean, let’s be honest…who REALLY wants someone with 10 gold gloves in their outfield?

Yet, Mariners are dead last in the AL West. The Yankees are 6 games ahead in the hardest division in Baseball.

DeWayne Wise is a classy guy, by all accounts. And as a career journeyman/bench guy, he knows where he fits in. But I still wonder if he’s a little sore at losing his gig to an older, more expensive guy having an inferior season.

He is a benchplayer losing his job to Ichiro. Its not like he lost his job to some scrub.

        Also, he’s a bench player.

His bunt against KCR turned the Yankees season around. So long Wise, hope that you can find another job somewhere (not sure if we got room in AAA Travelling Circus Yankees)
