They paid market value for him, I think, if the
draft pick is valued at $6-7MM. And for a ballplayer to be worth
$10.5MM a year these days, he doesn’t even need to be worth 2 WAR per
season. So it’s not like it will kill them, but there are so few
avenues these days to acquiring young talent that giving up what should
have been a pretty good player for such a low-upside 36-year-old seems
unwise.
