Amateur Draft Signings: Monday

Several teams announced mass signings of players from the 2010 Amateur Draft today. Here's a round-up of Monday's signings…

The Angels have signed over 20 of their picks, most notably supplemental round selections Taylor Lindsey and Ryan Bolden.
According to a team press release, the Mariners have signed 17 of their draft picks. The highest of these picks was Tennesse Tech right-hander Stephen Pryor, taken in the fifth round.
The Nationals have inked 22 draft picks according a team press release, including 15 of their 25 selections. No, Bryce Harper is not among those who signed on the dotted line.
The Reds signed 14 draft picks according to John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer, including their second, third, and fourth rounders.
Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog.com reports that the Mets signed 25 draft picks of their own, highlighted by fourth rounder Cory Vaughn (Greg Vaughn's son).
Houston's signing of Mike Kvasnicka, the 33rd overall selection, became official today. In addition to Kvasnicka, an Astros team press release also announced three other signings, including seventh-round selection Roberto Pena.

Astros Sign Mike Kvasnicka

MONDAY, 2:44pm: The signing is official according to a team press release. MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo tweets the deal is worth $936K.

SATURDAY, 10:37pm: The Astros have reached a deal with supplemental draft pick Mike Kvasnicka, a source tells Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. The University of Minnesota product was taken with the 33rd overall pick.

Kvasnicka, a catcher in college, is expected to sign in the next few days. The Astros plan on moving him to third base while allowing him to catch occasionally. ESPN's Keith Law ranked Kvasnicka as the 49th best player in the draft.

With first round pick Mike Foltynewicz also having agreed to a deal, Houston will now try to lock down their remaining unsigned first rounder, Delino DeShields Jr. Foltynewicz was taken with 18th pick while DeShields was grabbed with the eighth overall selection.

The Red Sox initially bought the rights to Daniel Nava for what Randolph and Mortimer Duke would refer to as the "usual amount", writes Alex Speier of WEEI. Earlier at Fenway, Nava hit a grand slam on his very first major league pitch.

Look for the Yankees to have smooth negotiations with first round pick Cito Culver, tweets Jack Curry of the YES Network. The Yanks can't officially sign the 32nd overall selection until he graduates on June 20th.
The Astros signed three more draft picks today, per a team release. They've now signed 19 of their selections, including 11 of the 22 players they drafted in the first 20 rounds.
ESPN.com's Buster Olney (Insider-only link) says there's "no bubbling, hot market right now for Mike Lowell." The teams who are interested in Lowell are hoping the Red Sox will give him away and eat his salary.
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe argues that Lowell still has value. Raul Ibanez, a friend of Lowell's, agrees that the 36-year-old's bat has some pop left, writes Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald.
Bruce Jenkins of the San Francisco Chronicle thinks the Giants are just one slugger away from World Series contention.
Addressing his team's bullpen struggles, Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest said he hoped the organization's current players could turn things around, but didn't rule out a trade. Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald has the details.
Fanhouse's John Hickey says that Mike Hargrove would be interested in managing the Orioles, though it's not known if that interest is mutual.
The Dodgers signed four of their draft picks, including fifth-rounder Jacob Lemmerman, according to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick and Evan Drellich.

Red Sox To Sign Bryce Brentz

The Red Sox are close to signing supplemental first-round pick Bryce Brentz, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America. The 36th overall pick will receive a $892K bonus, which is the same amount received by the Dodgers' Aaron Miller, last year's 36th selection.

Brentz, a 21-year-old outfielder from Middle Tennessee State, ranked tenth in ESPN.com's Keith Law's list of top amateur prospects, and was considered one of the draft's best college bats.

On Monday night, we heard that the Red Sox were close to agreements with Brentz and first-rounder Kolbrin Vitek. The Sox agreed to terms yesterday with Vitek, but both players must pass physicals before their deals are finalized, according to Alex Speier of WEEI (via Twitter).

Odds & Ends: Bettis, Royals, Astros, Pierzynski

Tracy Ringolsby of Inside the Rockies tweets that Colorado signed second round pick Chad Bettis after he passed his physical.
The Royals signed seven draft picks according to MLB.com's Dick Kaegel, and MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports that the Astros have done the same.
Ozzie Guillen said bluntly "A.J. [Pierzynski] isn't getting traded," according to Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun Times. Said the ChiSox manager: "I talked to A.J. a couple of days ago and said 'Listen man, you're not going to get traded." (Twitter links).
Meanwhile, Pierzynski can't wait for his 10-and-5 rights to kick in this weekend, says Mark Gonzales of The Chicago Tribune.
Pirates' GM Neal Huntington chatted with fans about this week's amateur draft at MLB.com.
The Athletics have signed 17 draft picks according to a team press release, including sixth rounder Tony Thompson and ninth rounder A.J. Kirby-Jones.
Jeff Wilson of The Star-Telegram reports that the Rangers have signed 19 draft picks, highlighted by eighth rounder Jonathan Roof.
The Braves have agreed to terms with second round pick Andrelton Simmons, according to ESPN.com's Keith Law (via Twitter).

Rays To Sign First Rounder, Close To Deal With Second Rounder

9:43pm: Baseball America's Jim Callis reports that O'Conner will receive $1.025MM, making him the first 2010 draftee to sign for more money than the corresponding pick in 2009. Brett Jackson signed with the Cubs for $970K last year as the 31st overall pick.

FRIDAY, 4:53pm: O'Conner told Smith that he will sign tonight.

THURSDAY, 4:43pm: Smith also reports that second-rounder Derek Dietrich, taken 79th overall by the Rays, is at Tropicana Field. Smith writes that "a deal could be finalized today" and Dietrich could be playing in the Tampa Bay system as soon as the weekend.

10:38am: The Rays will sign first round pick Justin O'Conner for an unknown amount tonight, according to Thomas St. Myer of the Muncie Star Press. The deal, which is pending a physical, comes as no surprise since Joe Smith of the St. Petersburg Times reported earlier in the week that the team had the framework of a deal in place with O'Conner.

The 18-year-old catcher had committed to playing at the University of Arkansas, but will instead begin his pro career. MLB.com's scouting report says that going into the draft, some teams liked O'Conner as a pitcher who throws a mid-90s fastball. Josh Sale, the other player the team selected in the first round, could soon join O’Conner. Rays scouting director R.J. Harrison told Smith that the team plans to start contract talks with Sale.

Astros Agree To Deal With Mike Foltynewicz

The Astros have reached an agreement with first round pick Mike Foltynewicz on a deal that includes a $1.3MM signing bonus, reports MLB.com's Brian McTaggart.

The 19-year-old Foltynewicz was the 19th overall pick in Monday's draft after posting a 0.38 ERA with 128 strikeouts in 72.2 innings for Minooka Community High School near Chicago this spring. MLB.com's scouting report says the 6-foot-4, 190 lb. righty can run his fastball up to 96 mph with a sinking changeup and a slurvy breaking ball.

Houston can now focus on signing Delino DeShields Jr. and Michael Kvasnicka, their other two first round picks. Both have indicated that they expect to sign.

Blue Jays Sign Noah Syndergaard

The Blue Jays signed supplementary rounder Noah Syndergaard, according to Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Syndergaard, a high school right-hander from Texas, was selected 38th overall and signed for an unknown amount.

The 17-year-old was one of four right-handed pitchers the Blue Jays selected in the first 41 picks of the draft. Syndergaard throw 92-93 mph and has a "solid delivery," according to Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star. The Blue Jays, who would not have obtained compensation in the 2011 draft if they had failed to sign Syndergaard, can now focus on reaching agreements with right-handers Deck McGuire, Aaron Sanchez and Asher Wojciechowski.

Odds & Ends: Strasburg, LaPorta, Lee, Padres

Minnesota has signed two draft picks, the highest of which is ninth-rounder Kyle Knudson, reports MLB.com's Kelly Thesier.
Washington GM Mike Rizzo says that there are no written or handshake agreements with Scott Boras about how many innings Stephen Strasburg will pitch this season, reports MASN's Ben Goessling.
Matt LaPorta, who hit three homers for Triple-A Columbus last night, won't be called back to the majors until the Indians can guarantee him regular playing time, reports Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com. This may not happen until Russell Branyan or Austin Kearns is traded.
If Derrek Lee is on the market, Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News suggests that the Giants should try to acquire the slugging first baseman. Baggarly mentions the rumors connecting Lee to the Angels, but thinks Lee might prefer to stay in the NL and play in his native Northern California.
MLB.com's Corey Brock says (via Twitter) that in regards to any Padres trades for batting help, "there's nothing imminent in the works" at the moment.
Texas has a "serious interest" in A.J. Pierzynski, reports Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com, but are hamstrung by their financial issues.
The Royals have signed seven of their draft picks, according to a team press release. The highest of these picks is right-hander Eric Cantrell, taken in the seventh round.
Mark Gonzales of The Chicago Tribune reports that the White Sox have signed third-round compensation pick Thomas Royse, a right-handed starter from of the University of Louisville.
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com tweets a scout's take on Seattle's possible trading stance: "Jack Z [Zduriencik] likes draft picks, so if the (trade) offers aren't great, they may not move."
Tracy Ringolsby of FOXSports.com looks at how Houston's unwillingness to pay their draft picks has been a factor in the organization's barren minor league system.
Tommy Rancel of DRaysBay.com thinks it's too early for Rays fans to panic about Wade Davis.

Braves Sign Matt Lipka

The Braves signed top pick Matt Lipka, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman (via Twitter). Bowman notes that Atlanta also signed seventh rounder Matt Suschak (Twitter link). The Braves, who chose Lipka 35th overall, signed the supplementary rounder for a slot bonus of $800K, according to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Lipka, 18, is a high school shortstop from Texas and had committed to playing at the University of Alabama. He hit .400 in high school, went 10-3 with a 1.43 ERA as a pitcher and also starred on the football field. Braves scouting director Tony DeMacio told Bowman that the Braves like Lipka's speed.

"We needed some speed in the organization, plus he plays in the middle of the diamond," DeMacio said. "He's got a plus arm. He's a plus fielder. He's got makeup off the chart. He's just a winning type of player."

DeMacio says the Braves believe Lipka can play shortstop or center field.
