Beinfest: Marlins “Open To Everything”

By Steve Adams | July 11, 2010 at 3:58pm CDT

Sitting 10.5 games behind the NL East-leading Braves, the Marlins have had a frustrating first half to the season. The Palm Beach Post's Joe Capozzi was one of many reporters on hand today when Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest addressed the media, making it clear that roster changes could be on the horizon:

“We’re just having a tough time and it’s very frustrating,” he said. “Will we be active? Yes, always and it’s already starting. The chatter has picked up in the last week. Teams now have a pretty good idea of who they are and what they’re going to be heading into the break."

MLB.com's Joe Frisaro adds that there are no financial limitations forcing the Marlins to clear salary. Also, the Miami Herald's Clark Spencer notes in this tweet that Beinfest specifically commented on the difficulty of trading starting pitching.

In a separate tweet, Spencer says that he feels some players will be moved prior to the deadline. He speculates that Dan Uggla and Jorge Cantu are candidates, but that Ricky Nolasco is unlikely to be dealt. Teams looking for infield additions such as Cantu and Uggla could be the Rockies, Twins, Red Sox, and Padres, to name a few.

Beinfest is hesitant to label Florida "sellers," and clear to note that he's not writing off the 2010 season. He does add, though, that if you're too patient, the season is suddenly over, likely suggesting that he doesn't want to miss any opportunities to improve the club beyond 2010. With Florida's new stadium 18 months away, Beinfest is looking to have a core group of players for that ballpark solidified.

Cantu barely has any trade value…Uggla and Ricky, however, can get a nice return.

I disagree. Cantu does have trade value. He’s a proven run producer and he’s still relatively young(28 I think) He has been in a slump lately but if he turns it around he’s a very productive hitter. It would be terrible to see Uggla or Ricky leave. I’m a huge Dan Uggla fan.

I’m a big Uggla fan too but with Morrison lurking in AAA, Cantu or Uggla will be dealt. Only if they become sellers though, but with their inconsistent play all season, that would be inevitable.

Yea I know I’m hoping of the 2 Cantu goes. They’re supposedly building for 2012 when the new stadium opens so wouldn’t it be a good idea to lock up Uggla for 3 or 4 years? He’s a lock for 30 Homers and 90 rbis every year and he’s basically the leader of the team. With the bullpen looking the way it has the past 2 weeks I don’t think its unrealistic that they end the year with a decent record. We’ll see what happens. Beinfest always has the trading itch when the deadline comes around.

What would the Red Sox have to give up for Uggla?

Why would they trade for a guy who will have no where to play after Pedroia comes back? They need a backup infielder.

Because Beltre just got injured as well and I thought I heard somewhere that Uggla can play outfield as well.

The only other position that i’ve heard Uggla had experience playing was 3rd but he wants to stay at 2nd.

they should give them cash.. but the Red Sox need to trade Lackey, Cameron, and Beltre and just buy out their redunkulous contracts.. those 3 are the main reason why boston will NOT make the playoffs.. all three are proven cancers.. John Lackey is so damn ugly he needs to be a Brewer.. Prince Fielder for Lackey.. Youk can play 3rd..

Yeah take the best offensive player on the team and a guy who is busting his butt everyday for the team and playing through a sports hernia and just trade them for being “cancers”. You’re an idiot.

why every red sox fan in the world is now wishing they didnt sign Lackey. Cameron i guess is decent.. but Beltre had one good yr that was his last with the dodgers then 4 horrible years in seattle. Lackey’s never been great

“they should give them cash.. but the Red Sox need to trade Lackey, Cameron, and Beltre and just buy out their redunkulous contracts.. ”

No one will take Lackey’s contract. Cameron is playing hurt and isn’t exactly lighting the world in fire. Beltre has been awesome. (3.6 WAR so far this season)

“those 3 are the main reason why boston will NOT make the playoffs..”

Yankees and Rays are gonna be the reason Boston will not make the playoffs. That and no one saw all these injuries coming.

          “all three are proven cancers..”

          ?

“John Lackey is so damn ugly he needs to be a Brewer.. ”

          But but but his wife .. (;

          “Prince Fielder for Lackey.. ”

          Facepalm on so many levels.

          “Youk can play 3rd..”

Who will play first ? Youk is a fine first basemen already.

I hated the idea of signing Lackey and now I hate that they got him even more…Cameron I wish they signed for one year instead of two but hes not that bad considering his injuries, Beltre has kept them in it this year…and his contract is good.

No team or GM is dumb enough to take medicore players like Uggla who can barely field… and jorge Cantu … guarantee if either or both get traded the Marlins won’t get much back.. maybe cash and a PTBNL.. that’s if they are lucky.. no one cares about the Marlins anyway… they average 200 fans at Dolphins Stadium yet the City Approved a 600 mil dollar stadium…. waste of money if you ask me

why would people go to an outdoor stadium in Florida when it is almost guaranteed to rain like once a day? A covered stadium will attract more fans.

if their current stadium cant attract 1000 fans in a 3 game home series what makes you think a retractable roof be any different

Try a package like Slowey, Ramos, Hicks, Bromberg and Valencia.
It would be nice to keep Gibson, but for Johnson I would consider it.

For 3.5 years of Johnson, they could have Hicks, Ramos, and whoever the hell else they wanted. Keep Sano or Gibson if at all possible and otherwise let them take whatever else they damn well please.

Wish nobody had even brought that up. I don’t need to sit around and dream about the impossible 🙁

Anyone think the Marlins would be open to trading Clay Hensley or Leo Nunez? They would be valuable to teams that need bullpen help.

I read that if one goes the other wont. most likely nunez gone with hensley taking over the closers spot. And Hanley and JJ are both untouchable.

Hensley could easily close, he has been one of the best relievers in the game. I would think Nunez would be traded before Hensley since he is making $2MM and Hensley is earning close to the league minimum.

Sox need relievers. Have nothing good in that BP, to get them to the 8th inning. No lead is safe, with DelCarmen, Oki, and Ramirez. Dont worry about bats, injured players will be coming back.
Sox play 4 games against a tough Texas team at home, then a long road trip on West Coast, by end of month they could be sellers, not buyers.
