Here’s the latest from Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe:
- Alex Rodriguez recently said he is retired and does not intend to return to the game, but he tells Cafardo that his decision to leave the playing field behind was a bittersweet one. “It’s never ever out of you,” he says. “I love this game so much. When you’re out here on the grass with my uniform on, you’re always tempted to grab a bat, but I’m also happy with my life.”
- Minor-league signee Daniel Nava has a reasonable chance to make the Phillies’ roster out of camp, according to GM Matt Klentak. “He can play the corner outfield spots, first base, and he’s a switch-hitter, so he’s got a shot,” Klentak says. The one-time Red Sox outfielder batted a modest .223/.297/.292 with the Angels and Royals last season. With Tommy Joseph at first and Howie Kendrick, Odubel Herrera and Michael Saunders around the outfield, Nava could compete with Aaron Altherr, Chris Coghlan and perhaps Tyler Goeddel for spots on the Phillies’ bench.
- At last check, talks between the Nationals and White Sox regarding David Robertson were in “stalemate,” but Cafardo writes that there’s a chance they could be revived. He echoes earlier reports that the White Sox would have interest in Pedro Severino, the youngest member of the Nats’ current catcher logjam.

a sub .600 OPS is “modest”?
TheMichigan
They really do have a weird use of “Modest” they called Christian Walker’s slash “decent but modest”
jdgoat
What’s your definition of modest? It certainly fits there
TheMichigan
They also called Don Kelly’s abhorrent slash modest too.

Not a lot of pith here, Nick.
But news seems to swing back and forth; it’s the pith and the pendulum ….

Hope Nava does crack the roster. He was always good as a bench piece/fourth outfielder in Boston, and while never lighting up any charts, always seemed to be good in the dug out and good for the team.
vinscully16
… agreed. Nava seems the type that may manage one day – good guy to have around.

Must be a slow news week if Cafardo has to talk with A-Rod.
The Oregonian
How do you figure?

Hey Mike ARod is still the best behind B Bonds that won’t be in the HOF yet

Sox should find another team for Robertson. Someone needs to remind their GM that they’re a championship caliber team in need of a closer to solidify their bullpen. Why are they so concerned about prospects who won’t be on the opening day roster? Makes no sense.
ChiSoxCity
Remind the Nats GM.
floridapinstripes
Probably because they gave up too many to the White Sox already. The most the Sox will get is Severino.
scjohn92
The real holdup is $$. Rizzo doesn’t want to exceed the luxury tax threshold, especially after committing $10MM+ to Wieters. If Rick Hahn’s willing to eat a substantial amount of Robertson’s salary for the next two seasons, Washington will likely include Severino in the trade.
Nola Di Bari 67
Unfortunately Jerry Reinsdorf eats no $$ regardless of how much they say they’re in rebuild mode. Eat the $$ and they’ll get their catcher prospect and probably another lower level player to hope on. Continue to be cheap and their rebuild will continue its half ass path because in reality, Reinsdorf runs a half assed organization.

With Wieters now in Washington the Sox should be able to trade Robertson and cash for Severino and another prospect. Nats need bullpen help.
lesterdnightfly
The Nats will keep Severino. Norris is the trade bait, as the Wieters signing made him redundant.
Blue_Painted_Dreams_LA
Well Norris isn’t going to bring back anything of significance.
mike.gordon34
We’ll see. Nats will sit and wait through spring training and see who’s catcher blows up this year. They need to move on from the sox, the bones have been picked clean except for one piece of meat that is over valued. Rizzo is a smart guy.
minoso9
The Sox are rebuilding and have acquired some good young arms. Some won’t make opening day roster, but you will see them soon enough. I’m not a Robertson guy as he was erratic last year and pricey. We have other closer candidates. I would like to see Sox pick up an OF with power.
Grebek7
Right on Minnie, find a club that’ll eat the $$ and give us some good prospects. Move on from Nat’s Rick find a trade partner with whom you haven’t taken to the woodshed. David was garbage the last 2 years, blew 7 saves each year & he was awful when brought in in a tie game. A man with gastrocnemius implants can’t be relied upon to close games

Trades to Cubs Roberson for Caratin and Candela good trade for both Caratin could star now and after Frazier becomes aFA there you next 3Bmen
GiantsX3
Wouldn’t Altherr be considered the early favorite for the third OF spot with Kendrick in more of a super utility role?
canyon2129
White Sox know their price. It will be paid, whenever.
