Latest On J.T. Realmuto

By Connor Byrne | February 3, 2019 at 3:00pm CDT

SUNDAY: The Rays “appear content” with their current lineup, according to the Tampa Bay Times’ Marc Topkin, who adds it would be “unexpected” for the club to make any more trades with spring training nearing. That seems to cast doubt on the possibility of the Rays acquiring Realmuto.

SATURDAY: Twists and turns continue in the saga of Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto, who has been a dominant presence in trade rumors throughout the offseason. As of Thursday, the Padres, Reds, Dodgers and Braves were reportedly the last remaining suitors for Realmuto, but the Rays have worked their way back into the mix, according to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com. While it seemed earlier this week that Tampa Bay had exited the race for Realmuto, the club has “re-engaged” as spring training nears, per Frisaro.

Fresh off a surprising 90-win season in 2018, the Rays entered the winter as candidates to make noteworthy upgrades, despite their low-payroll ways, but have mostly shied away from headline-grabbing moves. The Rays’ biggest pickup thus far has been right-hander Charlie Morton, whom they inked to a two-year, $30MM contract, and they’ve also reeled in the less expensive trio of catcher Mike Zunino (via trade with Seattle), infielder Yandy Diaz (via trade with Cleveland) and outfielder Avisail Garcia (one year, $3.5MM guarantee). With those four in tow, the Rays are only projected to open the season with a $59MM-plus payroll – far below their $76MM-plus mark from 2018 – as Jason Martinez of Roster Resource estimates.

Fortunately for the small-spending Rays, acquiring Realmuto would not cause a sizable dent in their budget. He’ll earn $5.9MM this year, his second-last arbitration season, and that relatively inexpensive sum only increases his appeal from their standpoint. At the same time, it also helps explain why the Marlins have been holding out for a bounty for the soon-to-be 28-year-old Realmuto, who was the majors’ top catcher last season. And the Rays, whose farm system features nine of ESPN’s Keith Law’s top-100 prospects (subscription required), likely have the ammunition to get a deal done if they’re motivated.

However, should the Rays land Realmuto, it’s an open question whether Zunino would remain in place. Tampa Bay could simply keep Zunino as Realmuto’s backup, thus giving it the game’s best behind-the-plate tandem, but the former may once again become a trade chip in his own right. With a quality track record, two years of arbitration eligibility remaining and a sub-$4.5MM salary for 2019, Zunino could bring back a player(s) capable of helping the Rays’ roster at another position. Zunino has already netted a solid return in a trade once this offseason, as the Rays acquired him in a five-player deal in which they parted with a cheap, starting-caliber outfielder in Mallex Smith.

The Marlins, meanwhile, may receive a Realmuto replacement as part of a trade, which could make Zunino an attractive target for them. While that’s merely speculation, they have discussed veteran backstop Tucker Barnhart in trade talks with the Reds, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com tweets. Additionally, a potential deal with Cincinnati could include 22-year-old third baseman Jonathan India (previously reported) – whom the Reds selected fifth overall in last summer’s draft – as well as at least one “lesser” prospect, Mayo relays. Acquiring Realmuto would be the latest sign that Cincinnati’s aiming to return to contention in 2019. The Reds are currently coming off their fifth straight sub-.500 season and fourth straight campaign with fewer than 70 wins, but they’ve since picked up a slew of household names in various trades.

Like the Reds, the Padres seem hopeful they’ll put several years of irrelevance behind them during the upcoming season. Although the Padres haven’t made any significant improvements yet, they’ve been connected to Realmuto and other stars in the rumor mill. Trading for Realmuto would surely take a bite out of the Padres’ loaded farm system –  a unit which includes a whopping 10 top-100 prospects, per Law; subscription required). Jon Morosi of MLB.com reported last week that the Marlins wanted big-hitting catcher prospect Francisco Mejia from the Padres in exchange for Realmuto, but it doesn’t seem that’s the case anymore. At this point, Miami’s interest in Mejia isn’t “especially high,” according to Morosi, Therefore, it’s “likely” that the Marlins would instead need one of Fernando Tatis Jr., MacKenzie Gore or Luis Urias from the Padres in a Realmuto package, Morosi writes. Tatis, Gore and Urias rank first, second and fourth among the Padres’ prospects at MLB.com, which places Mejia third.

It’s currently anyone’s guess which uniform Realmuto will don in 2019, but it seems we’ll find out in the coming days. The Marlins are within two weeks of opening camp, and it’s unlikely Realmuto will still be on their roster at that point, Frisaro suggests.

You never know the truth about past or present offers. That said, if the Rays get him, the AL East could be a three team race. Imagine how great it could be WITHOUT a wild card? Anyone Old enough to remember 1979 (there may more recent examples but 79 sticks out to me) will remember how great it was when the I’d beat NY and Boston by 2.5 games. Three of the best teams in the game fighting for a single playoff spot. While wild cards have made it more interesting for fringe teams, the beauty of baseball had been 154 and then 162 games for very few spots. It used to be the most wins went directly to the WS. Then two divisions with just one 3 out of 5 series. Then three divisions and 1 WC. Now 2. Pretty soon for that extra buck, the sport will be like basketball and hockey with 50% of the league making it. God, I hope not.

Almost all of the WS winners since 2000 still are the teams with the most wins over the the full schedule. They just have to play more games. Realmuto would put the Rays in the hunt, however he is very expensive and Zunino is a fine player with upside so they don’t need a catcher as much as the rest of the other bidders.

Yep, we are family year but the pennant chase is what historically set baseball apart from other leagues. Games nightly in August and September, each game building on the last. Then two head to head series usually a week or so apart. Four or five men rotations also separated baseball from other sports. A real team game. Just my take and yes it’s relevant at least to me.

I personally agree with the sentiment that India is not as good. I just don’t think an “appeal to authority argument” is a very good one, especially when mlb.com’s prospect rankings are so terrible.

I think India should actually be MUCH lower on that list. He has done nothing to impress and has a very limited ceiling.

Rays simply has too many bodies take up space in 40 man roster. They need to ship out some of them for win-now rather than waiting out and lose them in rule 5 draft. (Just like they had to ship Felipe Vasquez and German Marquez for sake of crowded 40-man roster situation.)

With already crowded 40 man roster, they have to add Nate Lowe, Nick Solak, Josh Lowe, Lucius Fox, Garret Whitley, Vidal Brujan and possibly more in a year. Matt Duffy (2 years team control), Daniel Robertson (5 years team control), Joey Wendle (5 years), Brandon Lowe (6 years), Willy Adames (6 years) and up and coming guys like Nick Solak, Lucius Fox, Vidal Brujan, Christian Arroyo if he proves he can stay healthy, Too many MLB caliber infield players for limited roster spot.

It is not hard to imagine they would like to deal guys like Brandon Lowe, Jesus Sanchez and Zunino for Realmuto. I don’t think Rays are yet playoff caliber team in AL East. They need to squeeze out at least 3-4 more wins to be a legit contender and Realmuto might be the last puzzle piece to the mix.

Agree that Rays have the most incredible system – so rich in position players. If I’m Miami, I let TB keep their top ten prospects and do some serious shopping beneath that. Guys like Brandon Anderson, Nick Solak, N Lowe/J McCarthy, Linares, Fox, and onward. Miami needs quantity as well as quality.. Miami should avoid any of the current Ray regulars other than Zunino.

Brujan would be a huge catch for Miami – a top ten prospect in baseball come next season.

Is it worth to trade for Realmuto and lose Duffy, Yarborough, Sanchez and M Perez or related deals that has been rumored? I personally like what M Perez brings as catcher. Anyhow, too many teams leapfrogging for Realmuto to keep a level head for the Rays FO to analyze properly. Most fans wouldn’t complain if their team lost in the bidding.

Wonder if the Dodgers apparent concerns over pitch framing might make the more apt to look at Zunino. Perhaps a 3-team deal would be plausible with Zunino going to LA, Realmuto to Tampa, and prospects (mostly from Tampa, one or two from LA) to Miami.

Pitch framing? Blah. If Realmuto had caught the LAD pitching staff instead of the wildass Marlins, his “framing” would have been just fine.. Pitchers with good control get more favorable calls from the umpire … that’s the simple truth of it.

Agreed….as an umpire, pitch framing or “trying to steal strikes” is a totally overrated “statistic”. Good pitching, and consequently…good catching, equals favorable calls by an umpire much more so than catching an out of the strike zone pitch….then obviously moving your glove several inches, and holding there waiting for an indecisively bad call by Blue!

I agree completely, this “stat” is smoke and mirrors, without any smoke and without any mirrors. Every umpire will say they call balls and strikes where the pitch crosses the plate and not where it catcher gloves it, let alone, where he moves his glove after he catches it. When umpires are fooled about the location of a pitch it’s by the same pitch characteristics that are designed to fool batters: location, sequence, break, arm angle.

Was this comment meant to be educational in any way? If so, it kind of fails completely. I have asked many times in these comments for any theories (any whatsoever) about how pitch framing works, what skill is involved, and if it’s real, why it can’t be taught. I have asked how umpires, who will say to the very last man, that they call pitches over the plate and not where they are caught, are not telling the truth. I have also asked how it is possible for a catcher to be good at pitch framing in one season and not in the next, and then be good at it again. Did they forget how to do it then remember again? I’ve asked these questions many, many, times. I’ve been offered answers to them exactly zero times.

The Padres have said there is no scenario in which Tatis, Urias, or Gore would be traded. They also included 3 more that were off the table, Morejon, Paddack, and Patino. If Miami is asking for any of those, I can see why the Padres are not involved in trade talks anymore.

Urias is a 2B. No reason to trade him to make room for a shortstop and Kinsler will not block him for more than a few months. If you have seen Tatis play you know there is no way the Padres trade him regardless of who they sign.

Urias has played all the infield positions save first i beleive. my point is if you get Manny and have Tatis up, the only of the three positions they will need to fill is 2B, which can be sufficiently filled by another player besides Urias if they feel a dire need to trade for Realmuto with him.

If India (53), who would rank 8th in the Padres system which had 7 guys in the top 50 prospects, would be the headliner in a trade for Realmuto, then the Padres would not have to include any of the guys Morosi mentioned. The most they would have to offer as a headliner is Michel Baez or Logan Allen if that is the case. Mejia would even be an overpay.

Trade is not that orange and apple. With all respect to BA and MLB Pipeline, I truly believe each MLB team’s own scouting department is better than them combined. If certain organization prefers #70-80 range prospect rather than #30-40 range prospect, then maybe in reality that prospect A is better than B going forward despite of their BA rank. I get that people would not trust Marlins scouting department with their recent history – few mega trades ending up with ZERO top 100 prospects this year.

That being said, I am no expert but I would rather have India over Mejia.

Pads. Quit clowning around. Realmuto isn’t a necessity. Give Hedges one more reason to see if he makes a nice leap offensively. Trade Mejia, an outfielder or two, and a nice prospect like Gore for a controllable ace. Then go out and trade another couple of prospects for another mid-range controllable starter. And then call it an offseason. (Unless of course you want to go in for Manny….that’d be cool.)

If the Marlins best offer right now is India, Barnhart, and a lotto ticket type Prospect. I’d continue to wait till July 31st. Yes it’s a risk he might get injured and/or production might not be the same but I’m happy to bet on JTR to continue to perform as arguably the best C in baseball and hold out for a much higher/better offer.

Isn’t it crazy how off a team can be. The Reds had Grandal and D Mesor some guy who they felt was better and more ready. The Reds choice got injured and ineffective for the next six while Grandal succeeded largely. They also gave up Alonso 1st baseman. Rays could possibly get Realimoto to condense talent and repackage him for an ace.

The Reds got fleeced on that Latos trade. They traded 1 guy who had already been an All-Star (Volquez) and 3 future All-Stars(Alonso, Boxberger and Grandal) for a head case. No idea what Walt Jocketty was thinking. Latos had decent numbers in SD, but it was known he didn’t get along with teammates and teams usually don’t trade young controllable pitchers. Not to mention he was a fly ball pitcher, not ideal for GABP

How did the Reds get fleeced? Latos was great for them. Alonso was blocked in their system. There was only room for one of Grandal or Mesoraco. Volquez was terrible. Boxberger has never posted > 1 WAR in a season. Then they were able to flip Latos’ last year of control for DeSclafani who has been quite good when healthy.

I’m a little surprised the Rays wouldn’t push harder for Realmuto. Seems like a perfect fit for them….need at catcher (Zunino will not be the answer), always in need of a big bat in the lineup, and he’s controllable…..Rays just never want to pull the trigger on a big acquisition.

A backup catcher and a fat poor defensive IF who can’t stay healthy or hit AAA pitching….ya, OK….

Any Rays offer starts with Sanchez; now add 2 pieces, GOOD pieces from an admittedly strong system.

And BTW the Rays have had a pretty poor offseason. Smith for Zunino will go down as the worst trade they ever made, rivaling the Marquez-Dickerson disaster…..if Morton was healthy, he’d still be an Astro…..and their love for Diaz is shared by no one. Bauers isn’t much, but he’s better than Diaz.

It’ll be a typical Rays’ summer. They’ll limp to the trade deadline, then move Duffy and Pham for some more “tomorow”.

Over the next 18 months he will decline in value from where he is today (somewhere between 2 top 100 MLB prospects to 1) to a supplement draft pick in top 100 of picks in 2021 (if Marlins are lucky that may get them a top 200 MLB prospect by 2023/24). The decline in value doesn’t just occur in August 2021, its gradual.

Where is the evidence that guys with 1 or 2 year windows increase in value between Jan an July trade deadline? Examples ???

Realmuto’s value is extremely high now. That is why no-one can confirm a deal with the Marlins. There are at least 10 teams already in on him and he’s better than all the catchers you have on that list..Buster Posey may be the only one better and he’s getting old now as well.

I get your point; however, it’s fairly clear that it’s not nearly as high in the marketplace as the Marlins believe it should be. if the Reds’ offer of India and Barnhart is truly the best one out there that would mean that this market for a catcher of Realmuto’s quality is clearly down from what it would’ve been in previous years. The Marlins have the option to wait and see if he becomes more valuable before the trade deadline. I remain skeptical.

In the end, the market is what it is. Teams are increasingly more sophisticated about the value of players with limited windows of control. It’s my sense that the Marlins better take what they can get and move on or they’re going to be stuck with an asset that is declining in value as each week passes.

Flowers would go to the Marlins. The last report I read the Marlins want Ian Anderson and company or Austin Riley and company and when I say company I don’t mean Flowers.

The Braves aren’t particularly interested in trading Riley because they see him as the future of third base. Anderson is getting some scouting reports as having the cieling of an ace and the Braves see it that way as well. As they have not yet developed an ace, they aren’t interested in moving him either.

So it could be the Marlins are choosing from two prospects the Braves intend as future fixtures.

With Realmuto having just two years of control and unwilling to sign an extension, I just can’t see how the Braves are willing to part with prospects they think are future cornerstones. JTR is little more than a rental.

I would trade Dansby and Soroka for a extended Realmuto. Other than that piss off. Anderson is a future ace and riley could be called up by july if Donaldson gets hurt. Also the bond acuna and albies have, I would hate to break that up
