Tigers Acquire Austin Meadows

By Anthony Franco | April 4, 2022 at 10:31pm CDT

The Tigers announced this evening they’ve acquired outfielder Austin Meadows from the Rays for infielder Isaac Paredes and a Competitive Balance Round B selection. Tampa Bay had reportedly been shopping Meadows in recent weeks, and he’ll land in Detroit.

It’s a notable, largely unexpected strike for Detroit. There wasn’t any indication the Tigers were on the hunt for outfield help, as they’d seemingly been content to open the year with a Robbie Grossman, Víctor Reyes, Akil Baddoo trio. Top prospect Riley Greene fractured his foot over the weekend, however, and is expected to be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks. Whether Greene’s injury increased the urgency for general manager Al Avila and his staff to add to the outfield isn’t clear, but they’ll do so by bringing aboard a player who’s only a couple seasons removed from an All-Star campaign.

Meadows was part of the Rays now-famous haul from the Pirates at the 2018 trade deadline for Chris Archer. A top prospect during his days in the Pittsburgh farm system, he hit the ground running with a solid rookie showing before breaking out the following season. Meadows hit a massive .291/.364/.558 with 33 home runs in 591 plate appearances in 2019, seemingly emerging as one of the sport’s top young sluggers.

He hasn’t kept up that pace in the past two seasons. The lefty-hitting Meadows stumbled to a .205/.296/.371 line during the shortened 2020 campaign, striking out at an alarming 32.9% clip. That was obviously an anomalous year, and the the former 9th overall pick did bounce back this past season — albeit not close to his 2019 levels. Meadows hit .234/.315/.458 in 591 plate appearances, somewhat offsetting his 27 homers with a mediocre batting average and on-base percentage.

To his credit, the strikeout woes that had plagued Meadows in 2020 were corrected. He only fanned in 20.6% of his trips to the dish last season. His 77.2% contact rate was right in line with the league mark, while his average exit velocity, barrel rate and hard contact percentage were all a bit higher than average. Meadows was instead plagued by a career-low .249 batting average on balls in play.

That can’t all be chalked up to misfortune, as he has gotten increasingly fly-ball oriented over the past couple seasons. Among 135 hitters with 500+ plate appearances in 2021, no one had a higher fly-ball rate than Meadows’ 53% clip. That’s a recipe for hitting for power but also for poor ball in play results, as non-homer fly balls rarely turn into hits.

Whatever concerns one may have about Meadows’ batted ball profile, it’s still easy to see his appeal to the Tigers. Over parts of four big league seasons, he owns a .260/.333/.489 slash line — offensive production that checks in 22 percentage points above league average by measure of wRC+. While he hasn’t been at his best in two years, he was still an above-average hitter in 2021, and the 2019 campaign offers a hint of the kind of offensive upside he possesses if he can again bring his fly-ball rate closer to that season’s 42.9%.

Meadows does have rather marked platoon splits. For his career, he’s a .271/.351/.525 hitter against right-handed pitching. He owns a more pedestrian .237/.295/.412 slash against southpaws. The Tigers outfield already skewed a bit left-handed, with Greene and Baddoo hitting from that side of the dish while Reyes are Grossman are switch-hitters. Meadows doesn’t need to be a strict platoon player, though, and the rest of the Detroit lineup is heavily right-handed. Presumably, Meadows will step into an everyday corner outfield role for skipper A.J. Hinch, who’ll have the freedom to perhaps drop him down a bit in the order on days when the opposing team will roll out a tough lefty starter.

It’s an immediate upgrade for a Detroit team that has also added Javier Báez, Eduardo Rodríguez, Tucker Barnhart, Andrew Chafin and Michael Pineda this winter. Avila and his staff are clearly trying to pull out of their recent rebuild, and the Meadows addition should be a notable upgrade to the offense. It’s not an absolute win-now move, though, as the 26-year-old (27 next month) is controllable for three seasons via arbitration. Meadows and the Rays had settled on a $4MM salary for 2022, and he’s not slated to hit free agency until after 2024.

That makes Meadows a fairly affordable pick-up for Detroit, but he was part of a large arbitration class that might’ve put a strain on the Rays payroll. Even after subtracting his $4MM salary from the books, Tampa Bay has a projected franchise-record $83MM player payroll, according to Jason Martinez of Roster Resource. The Rays reportedly made a run at Freddie Freeman, so they were willing to stretch beyond their typical comfort zone for the right player, but that surprising pursuit always seemed to be a recognition of Freeman’s star status.

In addition to whatever payroll constraints president of baseball operations Erik Neander and his staff might’ve been facing, they clearly felt prepared to deal from a position of organizational depth. The Rays have Randy Arozarena, Kevin Kiermaier and Manuel Margot on hand as outfield options. Top prospect Josh Lowe, meanwhile, seems ready for a big league look after hitting .291/.381/.535 in 111 games with Triple-A Durham last season.

The team apparently feels Lowe is ready for a significant role on a team with World Series aspirations. Rays pre-game broadcaster Neil Solondz tweets that the club plans to recall the 24-year-old to break camp in the majors. Given his status as a consensus Top 50 prospect, Lowe will certainly be in line for regular at-bats. He, Margot and Kiermaier are each possible plus defenders at all three outfield spots, giving manager Kevin Cash a chance to run some excellent defensive groups on the grass. (Arozarena is primarily a corner outfielder but rates well there in his own right).

In exchange for dealing from that outfield depth, the Rays add another young bat to their infield mix. Paredes has been on the prospect radar for quite some time, but he only recently turned 23 years old. A right-handed hitter, he doesn’t possess overwhelming power or athleticism but he has excellent bat-to-ball skills.

Paredes hasn’t produced much in limited big league action the past couple seasons. Over 163 plate appearances, he owns a meager .215/.290/.302 line with a pair of home runs. He has posted excellent offensive numbers all the way up the minor league ladder, though, and the Rays are betting on those skills eventually carrying over against big league pitching.

Paredes, who appeared at the tail end of Baseball America’s Top 100 prospects in both 2019 and 2020, is coming off a .265/.397/.451 showing in 315 Triple-A plate appearances. He hit 11 homers and walked at a huge 17.8% clip while only striking out 14.9% of the time. Among 96 Triple-A East hitters with 300+ plate appearances, Paredes sported the third-highest walk rate. No one in that group had a better walk to strikeout ratio, with minor league veteran Tyler White the only other player in the league to even walk more often than he punched out.

While Paredes has experience at each of second base, third base and shortstop, he’s primarily played the former two positions in recent years. He’ll step into a Tampa Bay infield mix that is quite crowded itself. Wander Franco and Brandon Lowe have the middle infield spoken for, while Yandy Díaz joins Paredes and fellow former top prospects Taylor Walls and Vidal Bruján in the mix at third base. Díaz figures to assume some DH at-bats vacated by Meadows’ departure, which would enable the Rays to get their younger players some action at the hot corner. All three of Walls, Bruján and Paredes have minor league option years remaining, so they can each bounce between St. Petersburg and Durham as well.

The Rays have never shied away from churning players off the big league club to bolster the long-term organizational depth. Paredes has just over one year of big league service under his belt. He won’t reach free agency until at least after the 2026 campaign, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he spends enough time in the minors this season to push that trajectory back a year further. Tampa Bay also adds a draft choice that’ll fall after the second round, currently projected for #71 overall. Along with a Competitive Balance Round B pick of their own, the Rays now own four of the top 75 selections — along with the accompanying bonus pool space that stockpiling picks provides.

It’s a fascinating deal between two teams envisioning both immediate and long-term contention in the American League. The Tigers add a potential middle-of-the-order bat, bolstering an outfield fresh off an injury setback. (In a fun tidbit, they also raise the possibility of Meadows pairing with his younger brother Parker — a High-A outfielder in the Detroit system — in the Comerica Park outfield someday). The Rays continue to preemptively stockpile young players and draft capital, building the kind of organizational depth that allows them to perpetually deal good players like Meadows with the knowledge that additional talented players are on the horizon.

Paredes is MLB ready. His contact profile seems lower risk than a power over hit prospect, so Rays will just nuture his exit velos to continue driving a doubles and hard singles profile is my guess. If he can consistently scald the ball, he will stick around as a solid major leaguer. Defensively, Rays could use him most at third but I think he is passable but unconvincing there. I expect he will be played across the diamond in AAA until the Rays settle on a position. Paredes will be competing with Curtis Mead (who will start in AA?) for a defensive home.

Clueless. He couldn’t beat out Journeyman Nikko Goodrum 2 years running, he hasn’t been a prospect since 2019/2020, passed by Kody Clemens and Ryan Kreidler. He was very expendable, was quickly losing value. Al Avila received a former All Star 9th overall pick hit 27 homers, for a sandwich pick after the first round and a 4A player with one year left to prove he can hit at the MLB level. See it for what it is….a late spring training salary dump followed by a promotion of a prospect that is ready to play. They now shed themselves of 4 million this year, projected 7 million next year, projected 11 million the year after

Holy crap the Tigers annihilate this trade! A talent like Meadows only 26 about to enter his prime years with 3 more team controlled seasons, for a middling prospect and a free draft pick? Avila is crushing it this off-season!

He will play less than 10 games at the MLB level unless there’s an injury, he’s never ever hit even 20 homers so more like 8 to 10 homers and his MLB average is around.215. Smoking weed will not help you assessment.

Grossman will be a trade candidate when Greene comes back in June. Blessing in disguise. Tigers gain an extra year of service time (unintentionally) and gain a power hitting LH bat. Grossman (who I love) is an avg OF with power, great on base %, who was nearly traded last year. He becomes expendable now and could get the Tigers a missing piece at deadline. He’s a free agent so getting a prospect or a RP at the deadline is likely.

Paredes is 3.5 years younger but hugely inferior. Meadows was an All Star hit 33 then 27 homers before his injuries. Paredes is blocked at SS 3b 2b and Meadows is under control for three more years. This is very one sided in Detroit’s favor and now he gets a chance to play with his younger brother in 2024 if he’s still here and if his younger brother finally becomes a MLB player.

No its not. Meadows was blocking Lowe and the Ray’s get instantly better…they had soured on his relatively one dimensional game a while back. Tigers are squandering their prospects on odd fits and some curious signings (Baez?) that could hamstring their future before it ever takes off.

For a prospect who hasn’t done anything since his solid start in minors. Weak exit velos, not a good defender with below average athleticism. But yea tell us how the rays win again?

I’m with DDTheo on this one. Just cause some players peak in their late 20s, doesn’t mean ALL do. Plenty of players peak in their mid 20s

He hasn’t cracked 800 OPS in any of his other 3 years in the bigs, his 2+ seasons of non-2019 ball have him with a collective 760 OPS. At some point the aberration becomes his lone standout season, and the further he gets from that, the harder it will be for TB to trick others (such as jmoney) into thinking he can replicate it

Is a reason that “this is all they could get”, cause there’s not a long list of buyers

DUDE HE IS NOT A PROSPECT! Tigers received Jeimer Candelario and Paredes in a trade 4 or 5 years ago. Candy is the Tigers starting 3b lead the league in doubles. Paredes has been in the organization since age 19 and has failed to unseat Journeyman Nikko Goodrum at SS and couldn’t beat out Jonathan Scoop at 2b. You are way off base here. He wasn’t even in the Tigers top 30 prospects and hasn’t been a MLB top 100 since 2020. He plateaued and stalled. He had nowhere to play and was talked about being traded since the last trade deadline. Tampa got scorched on this one. You can’t spin it any other way. Meadows will produce more for the Tigers this year than Paredes by a wide margin. Paredes will never be a starter and if he makes it to the MLB he most certainly will not start crushing homers and suddenly become Manny Machado. Prospects are like milk, they have a shelf life. Al Avila dumped him at the right time for the perfect injury replacement. No question about it. Tampa dumped salary which they can now use at the deadline.

Grossman is a pending FA and is an avg at best OF. His value is switch hitting, takes lots of walks, has 20 homer power. Meadows wasn’t needed until Greene got hurt and isn’t due back until June. He’s definitely protecting the Tigers long term if they lose Grossman to free agency. However, If Greene comes back strong in June & July, Grossman might get traded. If they agree on an an International draft, no QO will be attached to Grossman so teams trading for him might sign him longer. Heya solid all around baseball player. Great clubhouse guy. Tigers are just having a ton of prospects advancing to the AA, AAA and MLB now.

I’ve been watching Taylor Walls this ST. That young man can play SS better than most in MLB.

A number of teams will need an SS as the season moves on. This trade might well free up Walls in a trade to get someone the Rays can use as the season progresses.

          Rays always look for flexibility.

Walls was sought after by a few teams over the winter including the Angels. If Tampa chooses to trade him they can literally ask for and expect a solid prospect haul. If they keep him one of Walls/Wander Franco will eventually end up at 3B permanently

4 million, then projected 7 million then projected 11 million. Tampa sees savings of at least 22 million. This is why they need to move the team. Players making under 10 million are not expensive so if they don’t deserve a team. With their prowess of identifying talent had any real fan support and a larger budget, they have had multiple championships. Tampa & Detroit both have had two appearances in the World Series since 2006. The difference is Tigers spending was at its highest to go for it and lost, if Tampa could have spent more money, they could have won it both years. Money was the reason they couldn’t get over the top.

Some of Meadows’ peripherals indicate a decline. He’s also getting more expensive with a $4MM salary in 2022. That’s nothing for most teams, but the Rays count every penny. The Rays also have a ton of talent to replace him, so they need to clear space. They want the competitive balance pick. Trading current talent they can replace to keep feeding the future machine.

Bad performance? He hit .234 with 27 homers and yes, his injuries caused him to have poor mechanics snd increased K rate. The facts are clear. If you are trying to improve your offense would you rather have a 4A utility INF career MLB avg of .215 and 4 homers or a former 9th overall player, former all star, has hit double digit homers all through his career? The trade is a coup because of how little they gave up. A 4A player not even in the Tigers top 30 and a sandwich draft pick that has a 30% chance of being a MLB player in 5 years.

But paredes isn’t really that good lol. How is trading a former all star of who hits 30 bombs a year and now just entering his prime years with cost and team control for 3 years selling high? When paredes has one of the weakest power output and exit velos of any upper minor league level Tiger prospect. You rays fans really need to do your homework. Paredes is a below average defender, with no athleticism and isn’t even a power hitter. Y’all got ran, read the dozens and dozens of baseball analysts who say the tigers demolished this trade before posting .

I don’t even think there’s dozens and dozens of analysts honestly. And I believe if you listen to most analysts they’ll tell you “ rays win or break even on trades 99% of the time in the past 5 years” even if they break even this allows lowe to come up and showcase what he has. And if it’s anything like the minors he’s already an upgrade over meadows

You’re trying to fit Meadows into the same mold as Cabrera and Baez and you’re way off. Meadows is 26 years old and who are you to say he’s on the decline. He sure didn’t look to be on any decline that I noticed. He got hurt and tried to play through it and his numbers suffered for it. He thrived once he got out of Pittsburgh and I bet he’ll be just fine in Detroit with that lineup protecting him as well. The Tigers won this trade because they got the better talent. The Rays know that but don’t care because they got the money off their books and got a pick to boot it’s that simple. If the Rays could afford it they’d surely love to keep Meadows but the reality is they can’t so they took the mid level prospect and the pick and are happy with that. There is no analytics that would suggest that Meadows will get worse from here there just isn’t he’s too young for that and youth is unpredictable. Teams need vets mixed with youth to win and the Tigers look fine from where I’m standing.

KC38 the minors are much different than MLB my man come on. Lowe might be a good player but to suggest he’s an upgrade over Meadows without him playing at this level for an extended period of time is crazy. Why does everyone always have to kick every player in the ass on their way out the door? I get it sometimes some plyers just suck but Meadows was huge for them last year until he got hurt but now all of a sudden people acting like he’s a bum.

Kc38 clearly stated that IF his MiLB play translates to the big leagues, then he’d be an upgrade over Meadow’s. I’m assuming that was mostly referring to the offense. Defensively, he most certainly is an upgrade over Meadows the moment his feet touch the field.
I will miss Meadows. He was awesome for us, but I’m excited about seeing the next wave of talent like Brujan, Lowe, Mead, etc

Surprised that the Tigers are giving up on Paredes.

Paredes won a batting title in the winter league, is young and
      big upside/star potential.
Eventually, Peredes was going to slot
      in @ 3B or 2B as a starter.
Candelario I thought the Tigers would trade and give 3B to Paredes.

Tampa rarely misses on these trades.

Meadows has been an impact OF and could be again when healthy.
Meadows’s brother, also an OF, is the Tigers farm system too.

This is how the Rays operate. Better to trade a guy a year early than a year late. They also do pretty well at getting the most out of what a player can do instead of trying to get them to do things they can’t.

Look at Yandy Diaz. When he was with CLE, everybody said “This guy’s a beast, if we can raise his launch angle he’ll hit tons of homers”. The Rays acquired him, didn’t worry about the low HR totals, and just enjoyed all of the line drives

Meadows by every metric known to man is a better player than Paredes & some unknown draft pick in 2022. Meadows is capable of hitting.250 30 homers 100 rbi in 2022 while Paredes will be hitting.250 10 homers at AAA and has no place to play at Tampa.

Tampa rarely misses is correct but Candy Baez Schoop are locked in this year and potentially 2 more years. Clemens is a better version of Paredes. Paredes was about to lose his “prospect” label and wasn’t going to bump anyone out of a job. Tigers have Kreidler Clemens Panchero Workman amd Colt Keith all in the system with more upside . Tigers needed OF depth. It’s a great and smart move.

If Josh Lowe puts up somewhat similar production to what Austin Meadows does this year, for $3.5mil less money, it won’t matter how this player from Detroit does. The rays will not have gotten crushed in this trade. There is more to evaluating a move like this then only considering the players switching teams. Is Austin Meadows a better baseball player? Of course. But that doesn’t mean it was a bad move for the team. You have to consider money, service time, positional depth, etc…. We need to see how Josh Lowe performs now that he’s getting the opportunity. It’s fun to prognosticate, and call people names on the Internet (everyone loves that ‍♂️), But the Rays decided to gamble on a highly regarded (top 50) prospect over a poor defensive OF who can’t hit lefties anymore. I don’t know if “clutch“ is a real thing or not. But if it is, Meadows has it. That guy came through for us a lot and I will miss him. But if this front office hasn’t yet earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to trading players, good lord what do people want? How many other teams could consistently put a competitive team on the field with no money, no fans (other than me and like 12 other guys) in a market that has never proven to support baseball past March …???

(Quick question. The answer was “none“)

Great points Jesse. Randy October indeed is incredible. Don’t necessarily agree with the scouting assessment lauding his athleticism and instincts but denigrating his increasing K rate, his groundball rate and batted ball profile which forecast a player who’s peaked. But the Rays focus on that and therefore remain ahead of the rest of us. I surely hope the Rays do keep him and develop him. By trading Meadows, they certainly can!

As to your broader point, it’s not just saving cash but recognizing players who are not part of your core.

Except for the high visibility prospects, Detroit gives their other prospects half-hearted looks at the MLB level then moves on to Nomar Mazara types. Other MLB teams with real scouts are taking notice.

Isaac Paredes does very well in MiLB and in Winter Ball. By mid season, Isaac Paredes will be TBR’s starting 3B.

Tampa sees a below average outfielder who can no longer hit lefties and who’s value won’t ever be higher. As a Tampa Bay rays season ticket holder, I see a lot of games. We all love Austin Meadows. He’s about as likable guy as there is, but there is no way the front office is going to spend $4 million on essentially a platoon DH. It’s no Secret that the team unsuccessfully tried to move Kevin Kiermaier. And while I’m sure they like this guy from the Tigers, and the fact that he apparently never strikes out, The best part of the return for Tampa Bay is the roster spot filled by Josh Lowe.

Lowe is far superior in the field to Meadows and has legit 20/20 potential. This kid has all the tools and when Kiermaier is finally gone, this is our centerfielder for the next 5/6 years. Arozarena, KK, Lowe, Margo, and Brett Phillips are a solid OF group only IF (hate that word) Lowe’s power translates to MLB and Randy pretends it’s October every month (seriously, check out this guys postseason stats compared to the regular season!?!)

This. The Rays unloaded a guy not likely to be part of their core, whose contributions are in the past, and pick up a prospect. Do you trust a front office that recognizes the overall value on the field of the likes of Margot, Kiermaier, Lowe, Brujan and Franco. And revolutionizes the way staffs are constructed? Or trust a front office that complements a promising young staff with a collection of league average one dimensional veterans like Baez, Schoop, Candelairo and Meadows whose better years are in the past?

Yeah, I love how quickly some are saying the Rays got “schooled” in this deal. Sure, it’s good for the Tigers, but it’s great for the Rays. It breaks up the logjam in the outfield a bit at the expense of their worst defensive outfielder.

Paredes is a good pickup whose talent the Rays will maximize, plus a 70-80 draft pick. The Rays are now better on the field (by opening up playing time for their prospects) and got a chance at a couple useful ballplayers. Given how well they draft and develop talent I don’t see the Rays regretting this deal.

Losing “two-time All Star” Meadows is losing a talented player, sure. But some people who don’t follow the Rays don’t realize that they are 3-deep or better at every position. They can trade starting-caliber players, they can lose expensive free agents, even their stars can get hurt, and the guy or guys stepping in for them are usually close equivalents in terms of talent. I heard someone describe the Rays as being like Lake Wobegon, everybody’s above average. It’s how they’re able to compete with the big spenders in the AL East year after year, and why they never have to rebuild.

Tampa (as usual) sees a lot that other people don’t. Meadows is a one dimensional player with a rising salary. Don’t be fooled by 2019. His BAbip of .331 was a mirage. He had a lucky year and that is not sustainable or repeatable. He’s a liability in the outfield and he can’t hit lefties anymore (at all!). Tampa sees a DH platoon candidate. If this 23 year old from Detroit pans out, great! But the value is in the roster spot for Josh Lowe. Meadows is a proven commodity where Lowe is a prospect, so we won’t really be able to evaluate the Rays’ wisdom here until we see how Lowe pans out, but the logic isn’t hard to follow. Meadows 2.0 WAR last season was less than Margot, Kiermaier, Arozarena, AND even Brett Phillips…

Since ’99, only 8 taken in that spot have played in MLB, 4 with minus WAR. None since 2015 reached MLB. The best: Justin Masterson (’06) 10.1 WAR. Niko Goodrum (2.3 WAR) was taken 71st overall, as was former QB Brandon Weeden

The White Sox are the most overrated team in baseball ( Mets a close second). The Tigers are putting together a nice team. They look to be a year away, but sometimes the young guys come of age all at the same time.

We are developing young guys for the future now. We still have arms like Jimmy Lambert and Jon Steiver to eat innings if necessary.

Alright, no need to get so bitter. Meadows did have the 23rd most opportunities with RISP, so that definitley played a factor into his RBI count. Just because he had 100+ RBI’s with the Rays doesn’t mean he’ll drive in 100 runs with the Tigers. He only had a .772 OPS and .234 average. For a guy who provides so-so defense in the outfield and splits his time at DH, he really isn’t the most valuable player ever.

A player doesn’t face the same pitcher 5 out of the 7 days of the week. Most of the time, a line-up has the same general construction. Take Rafael Devers for example. 527 of his 591 plate appearances came in the 4th or 5th hole. All but one of Xander Bogarets’ plate appearances came in the 3rd or 4th hole. Bogarets had a .370 OBP this year and Rafael Devers had 113 RBI’s and the most opportunities with runners on base in the MLB. It’s also not a concidence that Josh Bell still had 88 RBI’s even though he had just a .757 OPS with RISP, when Juan Soto usually batted 3rd when Bell batted 4th.

No player faces a single pitcher often enough for you to say that “well it’s because it’s they’re facing bad pitching”. MLB players take as many plate appearances vs All-Stars as they do replacement level pitchers. Nobody is facing the same pitcher 300-400 times a year, like when most batters have the same player hitting in front of them, 300-400+ times a year.

It’s not an indictment of a particular pitcher. It is an indictment of pitching in general.

“MLB players take as many plate appearances vs All-Stars as they do replacement level pitchers”
This is an absolute falsehood. In any given year there are about 25 All Star pitchers in the league out of approximately 800 pitchers. That figure is a total guess, but since Baltimore alone used 42 different pitchers I figure it is a safe guess. Anyway, modern starting pitchers rarely face a lineup more than twice a game. So even if you are VERY generous and say you face all 25 All Stars two games per year, you are only looking at most at 100 plate appearance per year.
Of the remaining 775 pitchers, I would argue that about half of them wouldn’t even be big leaguers if pitching staffs weren’t expanded. They are facing these hitters FAR more often than All Stars.

That being said, I get your point.

Ok, that was a bit generous saying they face as many All-Stars as replacement level players. But does that mean that if Tim Anderson, who had a 4% walk rate, faced the same pitchers that Juan Soto faced, who had a 22% walk rate, their walk rates would be switched? Juan Soto still has to face the same pitchers Josh Bell faces, who’s BB% was nearly half of Soto’s. Anderson still has to face the same pitchers that Yasmani Grandal have to face, who’s walk rate was nearly 6-times greater than the shortstop’s.

The point I’m trying to make is walks are more indicitaive of the individual batter than the individual pitcher or pitchers they face throughout a season where RBI’s are more indicitiave of the line-up surrounding a batter. Would Ozzie Albies, who had 16 RBI’s and 107 wRC+ have the same RBI’s in a line-up with Freeman, Riley, Acuna (for a half season), and Duvall and Soler from August onward, or in the Pirates’ line-up, who’s only batters with at least 100 games played and OPS+ above 100 was Ben Gamel and Bryan Reynolds?

That’s not what the Rays do. They trade major league talent before it gets too expensive for near ready major league talent. And always seem to look smart doing it. To wit:

They didn’t draft Meadows. They traded Archer with a couple of years of control in one of the most lopsided trades in recent memory for Meadows, Glasnow and Baz. Archer fell apart immediately.

They didn’t draft Archer. They traded Garza with a couple of years of control for Archer. Garza only had one more fully healthy season and they couldn’t pay the 10MM salary that year or the 50MM contract the Brewer gave him before he was out of baseball entirely 5 years later. They also scored Guyer, Chirinos and Fuld.

They didn’t draft Garza. They traded Delmon Young after he didn’t pan out for him.

The pattern is of selling high and hitting on their return. And that’s just the Meadows connection. I don’t like it, I think it’s bad for the fan base that they can’t keep stars around. But the stars always dim and the Rays keep promoting talent they acquire in these trades. You don’t have to be as adept at developing talent when you constantly poach it from other organizations. They seem pretty smart to me. If my team just traded for one of the Rays “stars”, I’d be worried. They always know something.

I like the fact that the Rays churn their roster. Trading players at near their peak value ensures the Rays get the return they want, even if fans (and other teams sometimes) don’t realize they’re coming out ahead in the deal. The deals often look lopsided against the Rays because the players they trade have usually demonstrated useful skills at the major league level.

I live around Durham NC and I get to see the Rays prospects play for the Bulls before they move up. Not only do the Bulls always have two or three top-100 prospects, they surround them with other quality prospects who’d be top 5 guys in most systems, you don’t see a bunch of “organizational guys” playing for Durham. Not only is it fun to see these guys get promoted and have success in the majors, also the Bulls are like the Dodgers of AAA, they’re always good and fun to watch, much like their parent club.

David, he’s not a 2 win player because there is absolutely no way over a course of a 162 game season with 30 teams that anyone can determine how many wins a player is worth or what a replacement level player is. There are too many factors involved. WAR was made up by people who have no clue how to evaluate how good a player is so they think they can throw unproven numbers into an equation and make a fair judgement.

@gator bait He hasn’t played a single regular season game yet. Way too early to regret the contract. Correa’s injury history was a concern and I’m not resentful that they didn’t sign him to a long-term deal. 6 years of Baez for $140MM could still end up working out better than 3 years of Correa for $105MM..

And I don’t think Detroit is overhyped. There aren’t many people saying they’re going to win the division this year. But with the additions of Barnhart, Rodriguez, Baez, Pineda, Tork and now Meadows, they’re definitely improved from last year and should be within reach.

I think Paredes is befuddling and maybe Tampa can unlock his potential. This was a many move and Tampa took the riskier move. Meadows is clearly the better player now, past & future. Paredes is all on the if/come. Zero risk with Meadows and huge upside on him returning to 2019/2020 if healthy. He’s only 26 soon 27. Bug power in that bat and Paredes will never get those type of production.

Moving Meadows has a lot to do with opening up a lane for Josh Lowe (a better defender with a possibly comparable bat). It’s also about opening up DH ABs for Brandon Lowe as a way to potentially keep him healthy and open the lane further for more starts at 2B for Taylor Walls (or maybe even Vidal Bruján someday). Rays needed a RHB to balance their line-up, Yandy Diaz is aging and unlikely to improve (some very early signs of regression last year), and Rays will make good use of an additional Comp B pick (at worst it increases the Rays margin of error for picking so much around the 3rd round). All of this plays into the Rays efforts to extend their window.

The pundits are calling it a heist for Detroit so dream on with Win/Win. Paredes is not the player you think he might someday become. Meadows is a former All Star has hit 33 & 27 homers whereas Paredes hit .204 in two stints in the majors, was blocked at the MLB level and was passed on the prospect list internally by Kreidler. Tampa wanted their top OF prospect to play & dump 4 million. Their main focus was the draft pick and the salary dump. Paredes is a 4a player with a lottery ticket potential to actually be a starter. He’s no longer a high end prospect.

You obviously don’t understand the trade or how every top pundit calls it a steal for the Tigers. Meadows still hit .234 27 homers last year. Paredes is never going to hit 27 homers and is trending towards 4A status. Meadows is a former top 10 pick and All Star and is only 26. This is a hugely one sided coup by Detroit. Get over the fact that Tampa was desperate to get their rookie in and the salary out. There wasn’t anyone to take on that salary and could fit him other than Detroit. Tampa got the short end here & just because they win more trades than they lose is meaningless in this case. The Tigers win this trade—-Clearly!

      Paredes is a future star.
Was All Star and Batting title winner in the winter league.
He looks like a stud 3B and potential All Star.

If Meadows hits to his potential, then both sides get what they want.
If not, then this is “Howard Johnson” to the Mets, or Eugenio Suarez to the Reds type deal (trade a future star before he “breaks through” at the big league level.

If you had any clue who Paredes actually is as a prospect, you would understand that the bloom is off the rose and maybe Tampa can be salvaged but is a lottery ticket prospect and he was passed by prospects in the organization & they have many other prospects in the pipeline with more upside. This was clearly a salary dump & the carrot was the competitive balance pick which is fairly high and useful for a great drafting organization like Tampa.

He gives you great at bats, especially for a young guy. Great discipline. Has really good contact rates. Quality of the contact in majors has been the issue lots of soft contact. They have been working with him on lifting the ball more. Has all star upside. 20 homerun, good batting average and obp potential. Tigers didn’t really give him a shot. When he got a shot he got injured several times.

He was the key player in the trade when the Tigers acquired him. He was 17 or 18 and profiled as a power hitting SS. He grew stronger and moved up quickly but he stalled the last 2 years. Yes he only 23/24 but when you peak at 22 at AAA and couldn’t take 2b from Schoop or SS from Goodrum, it’s not promising. Tampa doesn’t need Paredes but they love the draft pick & salary dump. 4 million now but arbitration next year he goes to 6 to 8 million. Tigers scored big because he slides into starting and the cleanup spot. He’s only 26 and has been injured recently. Tampa fans can spin it and the people here who are clearly anti Detroit, can spin it as well. However, not one pundit is saying “great trade for Tampa”. They are saying “Tampa doing what they always do, dump salary, bring up the next prospect ready to play” 4 years from now, that prospect gets traded. Tampa doesn’t deserve a MLB team. Worst baseball town in baseball.

No emotional attachment is EXACTLY why Tampa will never have a large fan base at their games. Everyone makes fun of the Rockies for not making good baseball decisions, but they have about 2 and a half times the attendance of the Rays.

Not saying it the exact cause, but Rockies fans still get to see Charlie Blackmon play and have a rooting interest in watching him play for years. Whereas if he was a Ray, he would have been traded away in 2016. Sometimes the “worse” baseball decision is better for your franchise’s bottom line.

By the way. The last time the Rockies finished in last place in their division was in 2015. The last time the Rays finished in last place in their division was 2016. So, maybe you should get your facts straight before opening your mouth.

And yes I can tell you that. Because I root for players, not laundry. You don’t enjoy rooting for your players, you enjoy rooting for whoever happens to be wearing the Rays jersey this year.

I don’t think he is overrated at his current salary level. The reason the Rays trade so much and view players solely on their value is because the front office has to work within the constraints of a very limited budget. They are very efficient, but this is a sports team and solely constructing a team without emotional attachment is not conducive to fan retention. You can’t grow your fan base and increase your tv revenue with this type of operation.

Craig Edwards’ draft pick valuation approximations place it at about $4m. Also worth noting those valuations don’t exist in a vacuum, and a team so dependent on pre arb players may place more of a premium on those picks.

You are clueless. The draft pick is the sauce, it’s what they wanted. The salary dump is obviously the main reason because its 4 million this year, 7 million next year , 11 million year 3. Do you even follow Tampa or understand how Tampa do things? It’s addition by subtraction and they can use that money to add a player with a higher contract at the deadline. Meadows appears on a scouting service list of 15 players whose fundamentals warn of imminent decline (batted ball profile, K and chase rate) along with Javy and Arozarena. Maybe all 3 will end up with the Tigers.

The Rays rarely miss on trades, They circled back to the Tigers and specifically wanted Paredes. The Rays had previously asked for Paredes in other deals discussed. So watch this guy. He could be the next Arozarena.

Meadows is not that. He was for one year and has never shown any analytics since that show he can do it again. He’s a garden variety, slightly better than league average hitter with a huge platoon split. As someone pointed out above, he’s Joc Pederson, whom the Tigers could have signed for nothing.

League average hitter who doesn’t mesh well with the toolsy defensive excellence of Kiermaier and Margot, nor possesses the multi dimensional potential of Lowe and Brujan, two of the most exciting prospects, who were being blocked. Thought they were merely going to dump off Kiermaier’s salary to some unsuspecting dupe like the Cubs but this is even better, trading Meadows, who wasn’t in the Rays future, for an actual prospect. Why the Rays continue to be the smartest guys in the room. AL Avila. Not so much.

How can the Padres be considered any type of contender and not get this deal done??? Trent Grisham, Will Myers and Jurickson Profar is current Padre outfield. Meadows costs $4 million. Sean Manaea costs $10 million. That leaves $6 million to take even more money off Tampa’s hands in exchange for lessor prospect compensation.

Yes! Been hearing about this stockpile of pitchers in the Padres farm system for years now. Yet the past couple of seasons have seen the Padres “trade” for Mike Clevinger, Blake Snell, Joe Musgrove, Yu Darvish and Sean Manaea. The Padres “window” is nearly closed. Clevinger and Snell are in decline. Darvish ain’t getting younger and cracks under pressure. Manaea a free agent after this year. Got to try and squeeze something out of this group right now! Does McKenzie Gore get Austin Meadows done??? Not sure we ever see Gore in the majors.

Meadows was expendable. Josh Lowe and Vidal Brujan are guys that need PT. Meadows is a limited corner/DH type after he peaked in ’19. This open spot should help Brujan if the Rays push Brandow Lowe to the COF.

Paredes is also a guy they can plug into and around the infield, with experience on both sides he can fill in wherever the Rays need. His bat hasn’t developed enough power to play up his stellar batted ball profile. They could find the right key to unlocking his upside as they cycle through cheap young talented players.

Good trade for both teams. Especially the Rays because draft picks are valuable for a smart team. Rays value outfield defense and view Meadows as a dh and they don’t need him. For Detroit they get 30 hr potential for a draft pick. They couldn’t develop the player so he only has value to a team that thinks they can improve him.

Meadows had a horrific second half last season…maybe they were tired of seeing him strikeout in key situations. The key to this trade is the top 75 pick they got back. Let’s face reality, the Rays most likely had several more effective bats just waiting to be used in his spot. They won’t skip a beat without him. The archer trade was still the heist of the century with Glasnow and Baz still around.

The best: Justin Masterson (’06) 10.1 WAR. Niko Goodrum (2.3 WAR) was taken 71st overall, as was former QB Brandon Weeden

Shortstop only in an emergency. He is on the stocky side so not much range. Not very good on the double play. Power has not developed. Not much speed. Still, seems like a likeable kid. If the power develops, he will be a solid player. Maybe a Frank Catallanoto type.. I only saw Ryan Kreidler play a few times, but he definitely looks like a future major leaguer. I would’ve taken any SP at this point. They tend to know what they’re doing but this trade seems outta of the norm. Hope I’m wrong.

Like raw numbers or not, Austin Meadows collected 121 hits, 237 TB and played poor defense last season. Now, it seems Meadows has been beaten out by RF Ruben Cardenas and IF Taylor Walls.

I assume that Taylor Walls is a better defensive option at 2B than Brandon Lowe and will eventually play there permanently.

With Kevin Kiermaier in CF, Randy Arozarena in LF and Manuel Margot, who plays exceptional defense, in RF; Brandon Lowe in RF seems like only an occasional alignment. I think that in time, Isaac Peredes will take over 3B. Can Brandon Lowe play 1B or is he slotted for RF if or when TBR moves Kiermaier?

All these folks make me laugh.. this is what Tampa bay does.. they win trades if not paredes the competitive balance pick will win it.. Hell even if meadows never returns to form just dumping the salary is a win for the rays who had young options being blocked in the minors.

Meadows has been a hot & cold player the last 2 seasons. The Rays have a replacement on hand & his arbitration is now kicking in. The draft pick is probably more important to the Rays than the prospect but they obviously wanted the prospect also.

The Tigers have Meadow’s younger brother in their system, Parker, too. While he’s an OF’er too, he’s better than Parades.

I’m surprised that all it took was Parades to get Austin Meadows. The Tigers have several more prospects that might have been expendable. I think Kody Clemens is better. Colt Keith and Gage Workman were not going to be in Detroit any time soon and would be better.

Paredes is not the next Willie Adames….who the Tigers traded away under Dombrowski.

I guess Parades has nothing more to prove at AAA but, really, I don’t see him coming anywhere near the production of Austin Meadows.

Tigers gave up 71st pick MLB Draft pick. Since ’99, only 8 taken in that spot have played in MLB, 4 with minus WAR. None since 2015 reached MLB. The best: Justin Masterson (’06) 10.1 WAR. Niko Goodrum (2.3 WAR) was taken 71st overall, as was former QB Brandon Weeden This is a total coup for Detroit but Tampa’s budget is always a factor in everything they do.

With Lowe, Walls and Brujan ready or at least close to it all possessing far superior upside than Parades, this one is a bit strange, but it may tell me the Rays are quickly tiring of Man-Choi at 1B and will move Yandy to 1B and install Walls (who has had a terrific Spring and is an elite glove man) at 3B and use Parades in a utility role and see if he can at least keep the chains moving even if he lacks much power or speed.

Rays do run a great organization, however lets quit over-stating how they are brilliant on EVERY single move. Adames looks like he is becoming a star. While JP and Drew were solid pickups don’t pretend the Rays ripped the Brewers. Croneworth has been a great pickup by San Diego from the Rays and I am sorry moving out Nate Lowe for Man-Choi was NOT the move of an organization that always gets it done.

Parades is just like every other prospect, unproven until proven and while still young thus far is tending like a mere roleplayer, if that. Which isn’t horrible, most prospects never even become that. So cool your jets thinking he is “gonna be a star”. That’s laughable musings. Him becoming “a star” is the least likeliest scenario.

To me this trade underscores the 2nd part of the Rays model, trading off veteran players at peak value so as to limit salary demands. Meadows is the next in the long line of “solid” players the Rays trade to install much cheaper and possibly just as effective options in their lineup.

The bottom line is Detroit got a proven starting player (well against righties at least) and TB got a post-hype prospect with limited ceiling, but should have a nice floor. So I give Detroit the edge here, but even if Meadows hits 30 homers and Parades is just a meh guy Tampa Bay won’t lose any sleep because their farm is always ready to back fill whatever they just traded.

Question remains…when will they trade away Wander Franco. He’s an asset whose contract only makes him more valuable. His salary begins to pop with the 2025 season and then really bumps up in 2026.

I’m so sick of hearing about cronenworth he was a double a player when they traded him. Adames was never gonna hit here and I suspect he falls back to earth before long. I’ll always trust in the team because they always make it work.

It’s the last pick in the 2nd round. 30% chance to be a MLB player in 4 or 5 years. It’s Tampa so they could hit on it but the Tigers have a MLB player who’s history says .240/.250 30 homers 100 RBI for the next three years. Paredes history says .200 5 homers .

This isn’t a win/lose trade for either team. The Rays traded an at least decent player who didn’t fit their roster for a potentially at least decent player who does fit their roster. And vice versa. This is a solid trade for both clubs.

How can you call it even when Paredes hasn’t broken camp ever to the MLB and Meadows is a former all star, top 9 pick and has a history of playing in the MLB at a high level. What are you smoking? Not even close to being even. Tampa was desperate to get their prospect in the lineup. They had no takers this late in the spring and was shopping him for weeks. Tigers finally played it cool and Tampa cut bait cheaply. Every pundit says so and it’s hilarious you all are trying to spin it as “wait and see” or it was “even” NO! It’s a fleecing and it finally happened to Tampa. Get over it!

I think the trade shows that there’s not much left of Miggy. I saw a lot of ST I’d be surprised if he makes it through the whole year. His knees are completely shot. Just like Victor Martinez’s last year, he’ll need a pinch runner daily.

I think Miggy needs a total knee replacement. They hinted as much a few years ago when they said his knee condition is “chronic.” Knees can be fixed, but the fix is inconsistent with being a professional athlete. Get him to the 3,000 hit club and see if he would consider retiring at the end of the season. Trotting him out there next year will be even more embarrassing (for him).

I don’t see him walking away from $38M, even if he doesn’t need it ($30M for the year and an $8M buyout on the option). It’s rare that these contracts don’t go all the way to the end; it’s why players want them.

I am hoping they allow him to retire after this year and just pay him. He deserves the money & he deserves to walk away with dignity. 2022 is going to be a grind for him and I am not sure how long he stays hitting at 5. They are probably putting Meadows in the 4 hole and moving Candelario to 3 or 6. I think Candy, who’s a double machine should hit 3 giving Meadows a RBI opportunity. Torkelson could eventually move to 5 & Miggy 6 but not to start the season. Tigers lineup just got tough for RHP.

It may seem like a Detroit win in the moment, but i will give it time to play out. I’m excited to see JLowe patrolling the OF. Maybe Paredes provides some value. Maybe the pick turns into a winning lottery ticket. Maybe Austin runs into difficulty (or another all-star appearance). Only time will tell.
I do wish Austin Meadows continued success.

The only realistic upside for Tampa is the money they saved this year and the next few years can be deployed at the trading deadline & locking up a young player. Paredes is a depth piece, former prospect, trending 4A. Meadows can easily hit .250 30 homers 100 rbi for the next 3 years. It was clearly a money dump.

People really need to learn to dig a little deeper when valuing players. There’s a reason Tampa Bay puts a competitive team on the field on such a low budget. They are damn good at evaluating players. For example: meadows is a liability in the outfield and he can’t hit lefties anymore…at all. He’s essentially a DH platoon candidate. He hits right handers very well, no doubt. And he’s extremely likable. He rented my Uncle’s house last summer and couldn’t have been nicer. But for those saying this is just a salary dump…. They just gave Manny Margo $19 million over two years. why? 2.8 WAR vs 2.0 for Meadows. 2019 was a career year for Meadows. But it was a mirage as well. His .331 BAbip was a fluke and completely unsustainable. The Tigers got the better player but the trade is a win for both teams. The Rays get a roster spot for Josh Lowe and this kid can flat out play. Meadows is a proven commodity and Lowe is a prospect so we’ll have to wait and see, but this trade should be judged by more than just the two players switching teams. It’s like the Willy Adames trade last season. Willy will probably produce better than than the relief pitchers the Rays got in return. So did the Brewers win the trade? Rays opened up a spot for Wander Franco! When will people finally start giving the Rays front office the benefit of the doubt that they have clearly earned? No team wins every trade but TB wins more than they lose…

This site, like many sports sites, desperately needs a bot to log predictions, or a “remind me” feature like on Reddit. If people want to post some hot take on which team “won” a trade, they should be karma rated for it. Otherwise a lot of it is worthless. Nobody will revisit this piece in July, if say, Meadows is an all-star (or a flop) so there’s nothing at stake. Obviously many posters will give more nuanced and qualified opinions, but if people want to flash out with a hot take, that’s fine, but there should be a mechanism to put them on record. It would be opt-in and could be conceived as akin to a betting market, but with no money exchanged.

Detroit is twice the city Tampa is? This I gotta hear explained. You don’t mean the violent crime rate do you? Because thats actually 3x, not twice. Weather? Lol. Since 2000, Detroit has lost 30% of its population. Guess where they moved to? Tampa has gained 34% in population since 2000. You have the Red Wings, and they are awesome. Yzerman was a godsend for the Bolts. We’ve won the last 2 Cups so…yah. I’ll spare you comparing football teams. That’s just a low blow. You DO have a nicer ballpark though. No denying that one. I’ve been a Rays season ticket holder and when it’s 93 degrees and humid, the Trop is heavenly but sure it’s a dump. Since the Rays started, both teams have lost two World Series. Rays made 7 postseasons to Tigers’ 5.

    Twice the city he says….LOL

Tiger fans shouldn’t get too giddy about this trade. Tampa doesn’t make dumb deals. It may work out for both sides but don’t expect too much from Meadows. Paredes has some upside and Detroit is famous for not giving younger players much of an opportunity before they’re pedaled off. We’ll see soon enough. Hope it works out well for both teams.
