The Opener: Shortstop, Smyly, Outfield

By Nick Deeds | December 19, 2022 at 8:38am CDT

After a fairly busy weekend on the MLB hot stove, here’s three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around baseball throughout the day today.

1. Where can teams who missed out on Dansby Swanson turn?

Swanson’s deal with the Cubs puts all four of this offseason’s star shortstops on a new team. While each of the clubs who lost a shortstop has an internal alternative, all four would be bettered by an external addition. The Dodgers and Red Sox would be able to keep incumbent second basemen Gavin Lux and Trevor Story at their current position. The Twins wouldn’t have to rely on Kyle Farmer, likely better suited to a part-time role, as an everyday player while waiting for Royce Lewis to return from his second ACL tear. The Braves would be able to ease Vaughn Grissom in at shortstop rather than immediately thrust him into an everyday role on a playoff club. The pickings are slim when it comes to quality regulars on the free-agent market, with Elvis Andrus and perhaps Jose Iglesias the last remaining options. The trade market has more possibilities, though each comes with questions: Paul DeJong and Nick Ahmed could be had for salary relief, but they’re overpaid relative to their expected production headed into 2023 (and Ahmed is recovering from shoulder surgery). Jorge Mateo and Isiah Kiner-Falefa are quality defenders but both have been further than 20% below average at the plate since 2021, by measure of wRC+. Amed Rosario is perhaps the most complete player who could potentially be had, though it’s possible the Guardians just keep him until he hits free agency next offseason before handing the keys to shortstop to their bevy of youngsters in 2024. The four aforementioned teams will have competition, as well, with the Angels and White Sox among the other teams who could still look for middle infield help this offseason.

2. Will the Cubs/Smyly deal get done today?

Reports surfaced yesterday that the Cubs and lefty Drew Smyly were close to a deal, but it’s yet to be reported as done, and the terms remain unknown. It’s possible that resolution could come as soon as today. Fellow 33-year-olds Ross Stripling’s (Giants) and Jose Quintana (Mets) both landed two-year deals, but both veterans were coming off stronger seasons than Smyly. On the other hand, the likes of Kyle Gibson and Noah Syndergaard are among the players to recently sign one-year deals. Assuming Smyly indeed returns to Wrigley, that could take the Cubs out of the starting pitching market, as he’d presumably join Marcus Stroman, Jameson Taillon, Kyle Hendricks and Justin Steele in the rotation.

3. Where does the outfield market stand?

It’s been a busy few days for the outfield market. Andrew Benintendi signed a five-year deal with the White Sox, Joey Gallo took a one-year deal with the Twins, and Michael Brantley returned to the Astros on a one-year pact of his own. This leaves Michael Conforto and Jurickson Profar as arguably the top free agents left, with veterans like David Peralta, AJ Pollock, Wil Myers and Andrew McCutchen also available. The Blue Jays, Rangers, and Marlins are among the teams pursuing outfield help this offseason, and each (along with the Cubs) has been linked to Conforto. Profar’s market is less clear, and one rumored suitor, the Astros, just re-signed Brantley. The trade market, where Bryan Reynolds, Max Kepler, and Daulton Varsho are among those who’ve reportedly been discussed, remains an alternative path.

Honestly I’m super happy with what the Dbacks have done with their minor signings and not making any bad trades. They didn’t force a decision and they are going to let their young guys play. I wouldn’t mind seeing a Varsho, Rojas, Walston for Devers swap or a Romano for McCarthy and Fletcher swap. Glad they didn’t over pay in free agency.

Four years of Varsho, four years of Rojas, and potentially six years of Walston for one year of Devers?

I think Hazen is established enough to trust that he’s not a sleeper agent for Boston, because that’s the only way that deal ever gets done.

Outside of Bryan Renyolds there not much to pick from in the trade market either. Arizona is rumored to move their surplus but that’s just been a rumor.

They’re willing to trade from surplus, but are expecting a return of equivalent MLB value (by their internal talent evaluations) at places of need on the MLB roster.

Not too many teams right now willing to give up talent that fits those criteria.

I was looking last night at the remaining free agents and to me it is quite a list. Chapman. Kluber. Many others but I was trying to identify a match for Luke Voit and couldn’t. Anyone have any ideas they care to share regarding Voit or anyone else? Thanks. TGBM

I lean more towards his talented left arm and results winning out over the stunt he pulled before the playoffs winning out and some team signing him. Just don’t know which team.

I think he gets MLB deal. They will wait and do it right before ST or during the first few weeks. I think there also is a clause if he doesn’t come to camp healthy in shape and ready to throw 1-2 innings deal is off. They will pay him a small amount up front to get this clause. I kind of would like Seattle to take a shot at him. He doesn’t need to be the closer but a set up man. Rotate the closer role like they did last year. Wouldn’t be bad to have a lefty that can throw high 90s and maybe back to triple digits.

I was surprised by Voit getting non-tendered, but I guess the Nats agreed to release the MLB-Lv 1st Baseman they got in the Soto trade after the season, whether it was Hosmer or not.

For Voit, I can’t see him as anything more than a 1B or DH, and I can’t see him earning much more than a 1 Year contract in MLB, unlikely as a starter.

I also think he’s a candidate to go to Japan or Korea, but in terms of MLB teams that may need 1B or lineup help, my guesses would be Colorado, Cubs, and maybe Giants, but his market to tough to predict.

Good morning, vaderzim. I think I had the Giants as my highest possibility but still didn’t think so with their roster. Cubs I discounted because of the Mervis hype/hope and Wisdom. I think the Rockies have Cron at first and Blackmon at DH so I didn’t think them a match. I do believe you are thinking the same way about it like me and I would guess others.

I personally don’t think the Cubs should be basing any decision on Patrick Wisdom and his near 40% K rate, other than who else can we get… Voit would almost certainly be an upgrade at 1B and DH at this point in time. Mervis only played 4 games at the AAA level. It’s tough to imagine him being ready to take over an everyday role in April
Cubs need some thump out of the corner infield and DH, if they are going to have any hope of competing for the division.

@adkuchan totally agree that Mervis is not ready to take over the everyday role at 1B and absolutely should not be put in that position this year — they need another option to platoon with him beyond that the likes of Alfonzo Rivas. But for what it’s worth, America’s actually played in 57 games at AAA in 2022 (more than either A or AA), and as has been the narrative about him all year, several of his numbers continued to improve as he took that next step to AAA. So there definitely is plenty of reason to remain optimistic that he can reasonably take that next step and produce at the big league level in 2023.

I think Cron has a good bat, and it plays very well for him in Colorado. As for other spots for Voit to land, I can’t really think if anywhere that has a hole he could fill. I also can see Tampa as a possibility, along with Baltimore, or Minnesota, maybe even Seattle, but I still feel like anyone looking for player like Voit still has better options on the market.

Chapman will be lucky to get a spring training invitation, and if he gets one he’ll probably decline it. Wouldn’t mind seeing Kluber return to CLE, but he’ll likely end up in BOS, BAL, or maybe DET. I had Voit going to CLE, but now the only match I see is with MIA.

I had a tough time placing Voit also. I think the best bet is Oakland. I see them signing a Voit/Sano/Myers type to be the DH in hopes of flipping them at the deadline.

That does seem logical to me, mikeyny. Oakland signing one of those three on a flyer hoping to trade them for something at the deadline. Maybe Myers is the best option as the A’s could play him at first and the outfield corners hoping he shows he can play both for versatility.

I could see Voit reuniting with the Padres because they still need a DH.

Ultimately I think that the DH/bat that they get might be more of an outfielder because they need depth out there. That said, they don’t really have a true first baseman at the moment because they’re projected to play Cronenworth over there, so a RH power guy like Voit makes some sense to have on the roster.

He was trending towards full health at the end of last season, but kept battling nagging injuries, even in limited duty.

He was somewhat effective when he was able to take the mound, though. He’s a free agent this offseason, but he’ll likely have to take a low guarantee prove-it deal, although who really knows with all the money being thrown around so far.

I’m not concerned w/ how Orioles have gone through the off-season. Getting a SP better than Gibson woulda been sweet, but supply & demand for SP seems to have made it an over-pay type market.

Orioles have done great finding very effective arms from Waviers, over the last couple years, they can continue to do so.

Bradish, Wells, and Voth, imo, are going to get better this next season, and should have no restrictios on IP. Gibson will give them innings, and the 5th spot has G-Rod, Bauman, DL Hall, Watkins, Kraemer, Zimmerman, and eventually John Means.

I think the rotation has plenty of options, but I would have loved a Bellinger/Gallo signing.

Overall…what the heck do I know. Mike Elias is absolutely killing it, so I’m sure whatever happens, it’ll be way better than my goofy opinions.

The Rosario availability is interesting. Cleveland has two middle infielders in Gabe Arias and Tyler Freeman who both saw some MLB action last year, but neither knocked down the door in limited opportunity. Freeman is probably better suited for 2B, but that’s kinda irrelevant since Giminez could easily slide over to SS which is his natural position. Rocchio may be the ultimate guy in the end, but he needs more time in AAA. What could Cleveland get in return that would make a trade for Rosario worth it? They could use a SP upgrade over Civale/Plesac, but would you get that straight up for just one year of Rosario who is a good but not great player. Maybe Rosario goes with some prospects for a starter? Idk.

Rosario not going anywhere as he and Jose Ramirez are best friends. These two guys play the game the RIGHT way ALWAYS hustling… running every ball out…creating havoc.

Which one is Peas or Carrots? 🙂 I don’t think their relationship wins out over what the Indians have to do. Even Beltre and Andrus got broken up 🙂

@OIC This organization traded Carlos Carrasco. I don’t think they’re concerned with Jose and Ahmed being best friends if it is the right move for the team. They can hang out during the offseason.

Rosario can play …that’s the difference. Besides that Ramirez took the Huge Home town discount so whatever Jose wants Jose gets. Rosario stays put

Is Varsho genuinely available, or is it just that teams are asking about him? It seems that he would be considered ridiculously expensive, given his bloated WAR rating and his versatility that would now become moot if he never catches again. I am not sure defense-first guys are in as high demand as the owning team would think.

I don’t believe the Dbacks will move either Carroll or Varsho. IF they trade one or two of their top 6 left handed hitting CF, it will be Thomas, McCarthy, Fletcher or Smith.

David Fletcher is with LAA, and the other guy is with Pittsburgh. Which one are you referring to?

Dominic Fletcher (David’s younger brother) and Pavin Smith.

Dominic Fletcher’s offensive numbers look tempting. Perhaps, he could become another Nate Lowe. Thomas Saggese and Josh Smith for him?

I’m not gonna lie, I’d personally take that in a heartbeat if TX offered it; since we’re being honest still, that’s also an overpay on TX’s behalf.

If a steal like that fell in their lap I’m sure they’d pull the trigger, but Josh Smith as a main bargaining chip doesn’t really make sense for the DBacks with Josh Rojas already established.

You may or may not be onto something, though. The DBacks did have their lower ranked OFs up for discussion with the Reds for their IFs (mostly in MiLB); a deal like that makes sense from the DBacks side to clear 40-man space and move back the 40-man timeline a little.

I wonder why these morons keep insisting Hendricks is in the Cubs rotation? Even if he was healthy( Which he’s not ), He’d probably be the the Cubs 8th or 9th best option. The smart play would be let him have surgery and see what they find and then maybe he’s a late season addition if there are other injuries. His fastball was clocked at like 87 MPH and with a bum arm what’s that gonna look like? For a guy who relies on movement and twisting his wrist and shoulder to get it, It’s a fools errand. The 15 million is wasted just like Heyward’s money, Just eat it and move on. It’ll end uo the same anyway. My way at least there’s a chance if they do it soon enough and there isn’t much damage. I seriously doubt he goes north anyway.

He has had a track record of success. Two below average seasons wouldn’t kick him out of the rotation, especially when the alternates would likely be rookies.

What rookies? Stroman, Steele, Tallion, Smyly, Thompson, Sampson, Alzolay, Wesneski, Asad have all now pitched in the Majors successfully. I wouldn’t call them rookies. Not to mention Leiter Jr are all better than Hendricks with a bum flipper at this point.

Hendricks has recovered from his shoulder strain and it’s been a normal off-season for him. He’s in AZ right now working in the team’s pitching lab and they’re tweaking his delivery hoping to gain some velo. They’ve done it with others and think he can benefit also. Weird to think that they can teach velo now but Hendricks would be the perfect candidate.

He hasn’t recovered from anything and he hasn’t even thrown a ball this off season. What’s your source? The same one that says Lonzo Ball will be back any day now?

I’ve seen him with my own eyes in Mesa where the team trains. He’s throwing bullpens and working out there with the pitching lab gurus. What’s your source who says otherwise?

        Ducey;

Make all the fun you want of Mr. Boras…..

He surely did right by all his big name clients the past 3 weeks.

When Dallas Keuchel held out in the 2019-020 offseason and people here were making fun of him and his agent, Scott still got him paid handsomely through 2022.

In fact, as washed up as he was in 2022 at age 34, I wouldn’t doubt that if he puts in work this offseason and wants to pitch again in 2023, Mr. Boras will find him a desperate team during the season that needs a starter and he’ll get Mr. Keuchel a nice salary for going out and getting shelled.
        –
At this time last year everyone was making fun of Carlos Correa. He changed agents to Scott Boras. How’d that turn out?
        –
Michael Conforto is 29 years old. He’s already made a kings ransom in ML. What he makes between today and retirement will dwarf that.

The Dbacks have a surplus of outfield talent(LHH), but they are weak at catcher, and the Jays have a surplus at catcher, but need one more outfielder who bats lefthanded. How can’t these two teams not be able to workout a potential trade???

I don’t think the Jays and Dbacks are good trade partners at all. Dbacks are looking for a backup catcher and the Jays think of their 3 catchers as starters. Dbacks priority list is overwhelmingly slanted toward a power right handed bat for corner OF or 3b, or a Closer, or possibly a starter like Pablo Lopez. They Will trade one of their top 4 CF for one of these, but they will Not trade one of the 4 for a Prospect, or a middle reliever or a catcher. So I don’t see a match at all unless the Jays are willing to take CF #5 Dominic Fletcher or CF #6 Pavin Smith.

This is the point in the off-season where the smart, patient FO’s
pick up bargains that while not being stars, will give their teams production at a reasonable cost in areas they need shored up
    in 2023.

Samuel – Agreed. There are good players that act in complementary roles, and add production that make teams better this time of year (Justin Turner). These moves will complement the players that needed to be added quickly (Bloom on Yoshida the day he posted – a good move IMO).

Budgets do matter for 90% of the teams. Some of the players now can fill roles and still be shoe horned into the remaining money.

I agree. I’m looking at the Cubs now, and it feels like they’ve made some cost-effective moves. They might be .500 again. And they still have $31M before they hit the cap.

I never hear Cincy mentioned in needing outfield help and they sure do. They should take a look at Conforto and Myers. Both could parlay that park into their next contract.

Wouldn’t mind seeing Chapman come back where it all started too. They need to build a bullpen and you can get nice pieces on the second level cheap.

Of course if they do any of those things you were hear a thunk of all the Reds fans passing out.
