Rangers Acquire Jordan Montgomery, Chris Stratton

By Mark Polishuk | July 30, 2023 at 11:59pm CDT

The Rangers continue to bolster their pitching ranks, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan (Twitter links) reports that Texas and St. Louis have completed a trade to send Jordan Montgomery and Chris Stratton to Arlington.  The Cardinals will receive left-hander John King, as well as infield prospect Thomas Saggese and right-handed pitching prospect Tekoah Roby.  In the Rangers’ official announcement of the deal, it was noted that Texas also received an international bonus pool slot from the Cardinals.  To create roster space, Texas designated right-hander Joe Barlow for assignment.

With the Cards in seller mode, Montgomery and Stratton were seen as two of the likeliest players to be moved prior to the deadline, as both pitchers are free agents after the season.  Between this swap with the Rangers and the Cardinals’ move to send Jordan Hicks to the Blue Jays earlier this afternoon, it’s fair to guess that Jack Flaherty (another pending free agent) might also soon be headed elsewhere, and St. Louis could also look to some surplus position players with more team control as the Cards look to reload for 2024.

As for the Rangers, acquiring Max Scherzer on Saturday and now Montgomery today throughout reinforces the team’s rotation.  Despite season-ending injuries to Jacob deGrom and Jake Odorizzi, Texas had gotten solid results from its starters for much of the year, but some cracks have begun to show.  Most prominently, Nathan Eovaldi hasn’t pitched since July 18, and was placed on the 15-day injured list today due to a forearm strain.

It’s an ominous diagnosis for a pitcher who already has two Tommy John surgeries on his health history, and the Rangers obviously aren’t taking any chances with Eovaldi’s recovery or in their pitching staff’s ability to thrive without Eovaldi in action.  Manager Bruce Bochy told reporters (including MLB.com’s Kennedi Landry) today that the team is “pretty confident” Eovaldi will be able to return after just the minimum 15 days, though Eovaldi will visit with a doctor for precautionary purposes.

Scherzer and Montgomery now join a rotation that also includes Martin Perez, Jon Gray, Andrew Heaney, and Dane Dunning, though it remains to be seen if Texas will stick with a six-man staff.  Keeping an extra starter might be useful to help keep everyone fresh for the pennant race (and, the Rangers hope, through October), yet moving Dunning back to a relief role might also be an option.  On the other hand, Dunning has pitched quite well since his return to starting work, whereas Perez and Heaney have been much more inconsistent and Gray has been struggling over the last month.

Montgomery was already part of a notable deadline trade last year, when the Yankees sent the left-hander to the Cardinals in a one-for-one trade for Harrison Bader.  In his first full year with the Cardinals, Montgomery has a 3.42 ERA over 121 innings, though his SIERA is a less-impressive 4.30.  The southpaw has done his usual above-average job of avoiding free passes (6.9% walk rate) and limiting hard contact, though Montgomery now has a second straight season of a below-average strikeout rate (21.2%).  While Montgomery has never been a huge strikeout pitcher, his whiff rate has also taken a tumble to 24.1% in 2023 after years of much more solid results.

If Scherzer is expected to be more of a front-of-the-rotation arm, then Montgomery represents a mid-rotation starter who can be relied on to take the ball every fifth (or sixth) day and deliver respectable results.  Likewise, Stratton won’t be displacing Will Smith as the Rangers’ closer or even taking over a top set-up role, but he gives Texas another good arm for higher-leverage situtions late in games.

Montgomery and Stratton will each be reuniting with Mike Maddux, who was the Cardinals’ pitching coach from 2018-22 before moving on to join the Rangers’ coaching staff this year.  Stratton is also a known quantity to skipper Bruce Bochy, as Stratton broke into the majors in the Giants organization back when Bochy was managing the team in 2016.

Stratton is also on the move for the second straight year at the deadline, as the Pirates sent Jose Quintana and Stratton to the Cardinals last August.  Stratton’s 2022 numbers picked up considerably after that deal, and he has somewhat continued that form this season, even if his bottom-line results haven’t been reflective.  Stratton has a 4.36 ERA in 53 2/3 innings, though a 3.48 SIERA and 3.06 FIP indicate some bad luck on Stratton’s part, perhaps due to an unusually low 61.6% strand rate.

The right-hander doesn’t have the high-velocity arsenal associated with most relievers, nor are his hard-contact or walk rates anything special.  However, Stratton does bring durability in his ability to pitch multiple innings, and he has some of the most elite fastball and curveball spin rates of any pitcher in baseball.

Without any reports of money changing hands between the two teams, it looks like the Rangers will be absorbing the remainder of the 2023 salaries for Montgomery (roughly $3.5MM) and Stratton (around $1MM).  It’s not a big financial commitment to a team that has already been splurging on big-name talent over the last two seasons, and Roster Resource projects that Texas is still just barely under the $233MM luxury tax threshold.  The Rangers reportedly don’t have any issue crossing the tax threshold, so if another upgrade presents itself before Tuesday’s trade deadline, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the front office make another deal or two.

Among the players going back to the Cardinals, King is the best-known name to fans, as the lefty has a 4.27 ERA over 126 1/3 innings out of the Texas bullpen since he made his big league debut in 2020.  A grounder specialist who has a very impressive 61.7% career groundball rate, King is naturally more susceptible than most to batted-ball luck, so his huge .379 BABIP over 18 2/3 innings has been the main factor in his 5.79 ERA.

The Rangers have sent King back and forth from Triple-A on a couple of occasions this season, and he is under team control through the 2026 campaign.  The Cardinals will have the rest of the year to take a look at King and see if he might be an option for their bullpen going forward, plus in a more immediate sense King will add some left-handed depth to the St. Louis relief corps.

That said, Roby and Saggese are the bigger parts of this trade from the Cards’ perspective, as they join the three youngsters obtained in the Scherzer and Hicks deals as part of the sudden reload of the St. Louis farm system.  MLB Pipeline ranked Roby as the Rangers’ 11th-best prospect and Saggese 14th, while Baseball America had a similar tack in placing Roby 13th and Saggese 15th.

Roby was a third-round pick for Texas in the 2020 draft, and he has a 5.05 ERA over 46 1/3 innings and 10 starts at Double-A Frisco this season.  While he has cut back on his walks and home runs allowed, Roby’s strikeout rate has also tumbled during his three pro seasons, though his 25.6% mark this year is still respectable.  The scouting reports from both Pipeline and BA pinpoint Roby’s command as his biggest issue, as his overall arsenal is solid.  Pipeline gives a 55 grade (on the 20-80 scale) to all four of Roby’s pitches, though their report notes that the 21-year-old “may not have a true plus pitch” as a go-to offering.

Adding Roby will help St. Louis restock the minor league pitching ranks, while Saggese seems to fit the Cardinals’ preferred profile of a multi-positional infielder.  Saggese has mostly played second and third base over his three pro seasons, while also getting a good chunk of action as a shortstop.  He isn’t necessarily a standout defender at any position, but Pipeline liked his ability to stick at second base, and Saggese’s versatility is surely an asset as he climbs the ladder towards the big leagues.

The 21-year-old was also a 2020 draft pick (taken in the fifth round), and Saggese has done nothing but hit in the minors, including a .314/.380/.514 slash line and 15 homers over 417 plate appearances at Double-A in 2023.  The pundits note that Saggese’s aggression at the plate can sometimes backfire, yet he has shown a bit more patience this season with an 8.2% walk rate.

Dude. If the Reds are going to acquire someone it’ll be guys with years of team control to match their contention window.

Idk why you’re mad. You want him to trade premium prospects for a rental you could lose in free agency when you can keep the prospects and sign them in the off season?

Blowing your prospect capital for rentals when you have years and years of hopefully contending ahead of you isnt smart.

For the first time in a long time, the Reds are sitting in first place this late into the season. Guess he wanted Monty but I don’t see the Cards trading within their own division in spite of their standings.

They don’t need to deal premium prospects and definitely no one on the big league roster as the premium ones are up already. The deals over the last week, really the pick ups the last offseason and all season, proved that over the dumpster diving being constantly done. This is a pattern by this front office, not an aberration.

You better strike while the iron is hot because especially small markets never know when they will be here again. Talent doesn’t mean as much when you are constantly out payrolled by large markets.

Besides, prospects are suspects until they have actually been in the big leagues a while.

For real. I hate that that guy is a reds fan. He’s unnecessarily negative and his takes are way out of bounds for rational thinking. Reds have nothing but to be happy right now with all the excitement after so much misery.

The Reds have 4 top 100 prospects still

          Marte
          Arroyo
          Collier
          Encarnarcion Strand

All are currently blocked at the mlb level. As you said all the “premium” guys are at the mlb level. Guaranteed teams are asking about those 4 in trades knowing they’re blocked long term.

The Reds farm is heavy on infield prospects. Moderate on OF prospects. Low on pitching prospects.

Reds just aren’t going to give away guys cause they’re blocked for rentals as much as you want them too.

The gm is playing it smart. Wait till the right deal comes along
. Theyre a nice surprise this year unexpectedly but no need to make dumb decisions dealing prospects you can later use in off season trades for guys with more years of team control.

Prospects are suspects is the dumbest line…every quality MLB player was a prospect at one time. If you just see them as expendable because they have a chance to bust, you’ll never keep them, “in the big leagues a while”.

Overloaded on hitting prospects and short on pitching prospects? Wouldn’t say that’s playing it smart, pretty tough to convince pitching free agents to come and blow up their stats in that ballpark, but likely very easy to convince hitters to come and shoot for a rebound year. All of those top prospects should be on the table for long term controllable SP.

          Mlb contracts are guaranteed.

So regardless if you’re pitching a 3.00 era or 5.00 era 20 mill is 20 mill.

A pitcher looking to reestablish value or looking to get paid may not want to pitch there but if reds are willing to fork over 8 figure deals for starting pitching I’m sure a lot of guys would be willing to pitch there.

Not hard to convince guys to come when you’re willing to pay them. Cubs did this model a few years back. Loaded up on hitting prospects and paid established pitchers.

But they should definitely explore trading their surplus for controllable pitching too.

If Texas is giving up its 13th and lower rated prospects, then with Cincy’s quality prospects, it should’ve taken the Reds 18th and lower.
St Louis probably asked the Reds for more than Texas gave.
Keep the prospects for now. Hope Greene and Lodolo comeback and pitch effectively.
The Reds are actually overloaded on prospects with most positions being blocked with the big league club.
Patience with the SP staff. Greene, Lodolo, Abbott, Williamson and Ashcraft are all viable SP’s. Phillips and Lyon at AAA and should get a look in ST. RP should be filled by SP or traded if they are too good and blocked from starting.
Only complaint with my Reds is Bob C won’t sell the team. Cohen would’ve been a great owner for a small market team.

Should be happy Bob C still owns the team. If not they might be the Portland Reds or the Nashville Reds. Marge Schott bought the team because they were in danger of leaving town. The only way to keep them in Cincinnati is a local owner. Other people care more about population and tv revenue. I think they’re doing a pretty good job of working with what they have. Until there is a hard line salary cap there will never be a level playing field in MLB. LA and the New York teams will ALWAYS spend more money than the Royals, Reds and Pirates.

Respect to the Rangers. Their fan base can’t say they’re not going for it.

I have no idea how good any of these guys we’ve gotten for Hicks, Monty, and Stratton are. My guess is they weren’t going to get much more. We’ll see what we get for Flare as well.

Remember kids, the Cardinals aren’t good at this selling thing because Mo’s an idiot, and we’re usually buying not selling. So there is that.

Bully the Rangers though. Hope this helps them out.

I don’t think the reds should deal their elite prospects but I also don’t think they can assume they have a super long window ahead of them, they do have a great young core but those small market team windows can be shorter than you might think.

So if they can upgrade the roster without giving up mlb players or top 5 prospects they should do it because they don’t know if the division will be that open again next year.

They also have Votto coming off the books which is 24% of their total payroll. That money can be spent next year locking up young players cheaply. Or two mid-tier SPs in FA.

There’s a tax to trading in division. You don’t want to see the prospects you traded beating you. That’s why they took less from Texas.

Why should a team giving up on 2023 care about trading rentals within the division? They won’t be able to hurt them next year unless they resign, which is only a slight chance higher than they would otherwise sign with a division rival on the free agent market.

The Reds just either weren’t interested enough or offered an inferior return.

There are many variables that can turn a long window into a small window, regardless of market size. You never know what is going to happen from one season to the next. I’m of the mindset that when you find yourself in a position to make a run, you go for it. Not necessarily in a reckless way that jeopardizes the overall value of your organization, but you take more risks to maximize the opportunity.

You might lose some trades long term, but hopefully the short term success softens the blow of a prospect finding success elsewhere.

You have to hand it to the Rangers, Chris Young and the team’s owner. They started their ‘makeover’ last year with Semien & Seager and people laughed over their results. This year, they focused on upgrading their pitching and everything came together nicely for them. They’ve spent a lot of money to improve and now that their pitching is starting to show some holes, they go out and acquire both Scherzer & Monty…pretty impressive stuff!

While I’m not a Rangers fan, I have to tip my cap to them for committing to getting better and really making an effort to go for it this season. If the Red Sox (my team) does not make the playoffs, I’ll be rooting for the Rangers. They talked big, spent big and now are doubling down on their team’s great start in 2023. It’s refreshing to see an owner spend money to improve his team and then keep investing in it even after a very poor season a year ago.

Semien is chronically underrated. Incredibly durable, it’s even a little disappointing when he doesn’t play all 162 games, I thought getting him for 7/175m was an excellent move given how well he had been aging and given the general trajectory of salaries.

A recent article in fangraphs even dismissed his performance a little since he’s so durable it’s almost unfair to compare him to other MIs. Simmy’s headed for another 6 rWAR season, building a HOF case. He’ll be over 40 rWAR (fg’s version doesn’t like him as much) by the end of 2023. If he gets two more 6 win seasons he’ll be 34 with around 52-53 rWAR and a peak case locked in that’s higher than the average SS HOFer.

He’ll probably wind up in competition with other 2Bman for a Hall spot by the time he’s through, and the Rangers will have every incentive to keep playing him through his age 37 season. He can also throw a 1.021 postseason OPS into the hopper of his case. His bat doesn’t play at a corner, or won’t by the time he’s 36 or 37, so he’d better plan on holding up in the MI. Overall, one of the few underrated stars in MLB.

No 1000 ops seasons. No 900. 2 800. Better get it going with the bat or start racking up gold gloves stolen bases. Not sure what writer’s hall of fame looks for but he isn’t going in mine.

Average HOF SS has a 67 career WAR, he’s way off that. He’s also way off on black ink, gray ink, and HOF monitor doesn’t even have him half way.

He’s a pretty good ballplayer and often real good. He’s just been quite far from being elite or the top 1% to have played the game.

Heaney is going to a long relief role. He has a vesting option based on innings pitched that would get him $20 million next year. No way the Rangers are letting that happen.

Unfortunately, Heaney’s deal is a straight $13 million player option, I believe. There are incentives up to $20 million, but the base is a player option. I’m afraid he’ll be back next year regardless of his inning count.

Nope, his contract is $13 million with a $500k buyout. If he pitches 150 innings then he’s guaranteed $20 million.. If he doesn’t vest, then they can dump him for $500k.

Eh, maybe you’re right, and it’s a player option either way, but they’d still rather pay him $13 than $20.

There are worse starters around, and most teams not owned by Fred Wilpon are very, very careful not to cheat players out of bonuses and vesting options. It’s all too apparent what they’re doing when they do it, players hate it, the MLBPA inevitably files a grievance, and teams have learned to knock it off. I’d be amazed if the Rangers try anything like this.

@case, don’t forget the trifecta of roided up Juan, Jose and Palmerio. I also certainly think Pudge was eventually in on that too. But certainly not calling the kettle black as Yanks have had their share. But that 1991 or 1992 Ranger team was insane with Juan batting in 144 RBI.

Saggese is a fantastic prospect for St. Louis to acquire. He plays 3B, 2B & SS and has hit extremely well at every level of the minors so far. He should immediately become a Top 5 prospect in the Cardinals organization and could be major league ready as early as next season.

The pitching prospect (Roby) isn’t quite as good but if he can dial in his control a bit, he could become a solid #3 or #4 pitcher for them for years to come. Pretty solid return for less than 3 months of control of Monty & Stratton.

As a Ranger fan I think Roby is the score. Roby just needs to stay healthy. Seggese is nice but he is very limited player. Average MLB 2B to a Utility type of player. Weird swing using all arms. Below average contact rates that does produce solid exit velocity numbers. I can only imagine every MLB club has 2-3 players in its organization that fits that profile.

3 rentals get you 4 prospects 3 of which are pitchers. The middle infielder is there for depth for when DeJong and maybe another goes with Flaherty. Really it’s lottery tickets for the loss of rentals, the big work needs to take place in the off season, that’s where my confidence runs out.

Hicks return was pretty decent but they must see something in the players they got back in the Montgomery return that many of us don’t. Of course where they are in AA this year and ranked 14-17, they would be in AAA and likely ranked much higher next year. Time will tell.

You guys should be doing some deals soon too should be fun. I like the fit with the Orioles hopefully their GM has a better attitude then some of their fans.

I remember when they drafted Roby and there were some good comments then but hadn’t heard anything since. Sounds like he gas progressed. I’m wondering if the Tigers are not going to extend Lorenzen or rework Erod’s deal both of which I’d be good with. Lots of time left until the deadline. Hopefully they make a good deal to fill a hole. Cheers.

Tigers will trade both imo and they should. Mize is coming back with a healthy Skubal you can dream on those 2. But soon to be free agents have to go.

I’d prefer they trade them for a good trturn but not for the sake of trading them. They are both good pitchers who have done well under the tutelage of Tigers pitching coach Chris Fetter. If we can’t fill another need with them (young 2B or 3B to add to the young core) or get good returns for both, then having one of them under contract next year to go with Mize, Skubal, Manning and Olsen is a good top 5 with Wentz and Brieske around and Madden and Flores working their way up through the minors. We went through a whole starting pitching staff again this year unfortunately. I expect at least one gets traded before Tuesday, if not both.

The Rangers really need relief help now. Outside of Chapman, I don’t like anyone in their bullpen. If they can get 2 more guys, maybe like one of Bednar and Hader, and then a lesser reliever like Hunter Harvey, Liam Hendriks (if healthy) or Justin Lawrence, that might make them the favorite

I agree, but not in the way you say. Montgomery has a much better ERA+ and ERA, along with a better FIP this season, not to mention last season. Montgomery > Giolito, but it’s reasonable to think the opposite. That’s a fair opinion. I just don’t like Giolito’s inconsistency, high pitch counts, walks, and homerun tendencies.

It’s not so much Giolito but the relievers. One guy I wouldn’t trust pitching with small lead in playoffs. The other is easily a 7th inning guy at the very least.

All 3 of these guys should make mlb and could be useful or even starters. King obviously a reliever.

I get what Mozaliak is doing and I don’t mind it. He’s getting more pitchers like he already has in the minors hoping one or two of them can turn out to be a number 3 quality, but more likely the next crop of relievers. These are acquisitions are far from fulfilling the proclamation to compete in 2024, but they are in line with the realistic expectations Monty and Hicks should have been able to return.

So, for 3 2-month rentals that had no future in St. Louis (not after the failed Hicks extension), the Cardinals received:

    * Blue Jays #7 starter prospect Sem Robberse (AA)
    * Blue Jays starter Adam Kloffenstein (AA)
    * Rangers #11 prospect Tekoah Roby
    * Rangers #14 prospect Thomas Saggese
    * Rangers LHP John King

They need relievers for next year. Cardinals got solid returns considering that. But they aren’t anymore the starting pitcher prospect then they already have in McGreevy, Graceffo, Hjerpe, Thompson, etc.. but law of large numbers says one one should make it as a back end guy.

@LoneStarStampede If you think Max is ‘quality pitching’ at this point, you may not have been watching his Mets starts. He’ll throw 4 or 5 good pitches, then groove one. Throw 6 or 7 good pitches, then groove one…. He’s been complaining all season about the height of the stitches on the balls. That’s consistent with his inconstancy in the matter of throwing pitches he wants where he wants to throw them.

Could also be that he doesn’t like being 38-39 and what aging does to an athlete and he’s just being cranky without recognizing the root cause of his failures, but in any case he’s giving up almost 2 home runs per 9. That’s brutal, and it’s not just bad luck on fly balls. He’s throwing about 12-15 batting practice pitches per game up there, and MLB players are teeing off on him.

B for Cards. 3 years control of a ground ball pitcher. 4 average to above pitch mix mid rotation starter. Only concern would be size and delivery. I would bet on him. 2b 3b that should hit enough and have 20 hrs in him. Nice return. Not Sox nice.

C for Rangers. Playoff caliber starter. Didn’t give up a elite defender or walker. Kept their more electric arms. I wouldn’t trust Stratton but he is a ok enough arm to save your better arms. They paid but that is what market has required so far.

But, Seager and Heim are down, and Eovaldi is out for some unknown amount of time. I find it impressive they kept the Eovaldi thing from leaking before the Scherzer trade to maintain leverage. This is kind of like the Mets losing half their free agents and then acquiring new guys to replace them (almost).

Acuna is better than mid level prospect. By “this and the Chapman trade” I meant the trade the article is referring to (Montgomery) and ofc Chapman.

the best thing that most prospects can do is play themselves to a point where they are a valuable trade piece. I don’t think I will lose any sleep over any of these guys, maybe Roby.

Seems like the Dodgers could have beaten this deal. I suppose Friedman has a plan.

Anyone could have beaten this deal. Even the no farm system Astros Jays Marlins.

Need to just get rid of that bum Perez and ride with Scherzer / Eovaldi (when he returns) / Montgomery / Gray / Dunning or Heaney the rest of the year.

Looks like an awful return for the Cardinals. I can’t fathom the Orioles or Reds not being able to top this offer. It’s hilarious there’s teams like the Rangers, Braves, and Padres who just tell other teams to bend over and take all their best talent. They are Mets West.

No top ten prospects and a fringe major league swingman/reliever?? Not seeing it.
Those guys look ok I guess but not that special.

Some top 10s depending on team. Shouldn’t get top 10s for rental. Maybe they could have but went quantity over quality. I like the quality of the quantity so good move.

Yeah, unless the guy is a star player, you’re not generally going to get any top 10 prospects for a rental. There are two rentals here, but Stratton doesn’t add that much value to the trade.

As a Cardinals fan I have to wait and see the “collective picture” when it’s all said and done. I do believe Texas won this trade, but for the Cardinals, ultimately, it’s about the collective returns after ALL trades that ultimately matter.

    Cardinals still aren’t done.

Flaherty will be moved. I suspect DeJong may be moved. I suspect one or both of Carlson and Burleson will be moved. Hell, Edman – currently on the IL – could be moved.

Being sellers is new to Cardinals fans – I get it. At least wait and see what the *entire* haul once the deadline has come and gone before handing out score cards.

Potentially still a lot of new players coming to St. Louis before Tuesday’s deadline.

As a Rangers fan I am happy to see them taking advantage of their record this year. This is probably a year ahead of schedule but nothing is guaranteed and you gotta strike while you can. I think they have made the right moves to bolster the rotation and pen, hopefully it pays off but regardless every Rangers fan should be pleased with their efforts. Was a bit sad to see Acuna go but sometimes you just gotta pull the trigger, that one may come to bite us though if the postseason doesn’t work out for us.

Exactly my thoughts. This isn’t our year but fully expecting world series contenders next season. Albeit, injuries are unpredictable so might as well rebuff the roster and see how far we can ride through the playoffs this season, while we have this glimmer of success.

Stratton is servicable, but he is by no means “a good arm for higher-leverage situations.” Good luck with him.

You can be sure that the Cardinals did not get any injured ballplayers for Jordan Montgomery! Best wishes for Monty and his chance for a ring. I always appreciate his efforts when he played for the Yankees. Too bad he played for a Mickey Mouse organization then.

“That said, Roby and Saggese are the bigger parts of this trade from the Cards’ perspective, as they join the three youngsters obtained in the Scherzer and Hicks deals as part of the sudden reload of the St. Louis farm system.”

What players did the Cardinals obtain for Scherzer?

I read that part of the article several times since I guessed I was just reading it wrong. But, yeah: how were the Cards getting anything for the Mets deal with TX on Scherzer???

Lots of people have been drooling over Roby since yesterday. I mean I know the bar is low for the Cardinals these days with pitching but a guy that stunk at high A and has stunk at AA in back to back seasons while having multiple arm/shoulder issues over the last 3 years doesn’t exactly scream great trade.
